RE: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

2008-06-13 Thread Bill Bienia
The models shown in Evidence! are not outdated, the elements are just
arranged in a different order (as Ms. Mills acknowledges in Evidence
Explained.) Also, the number of models in Evidence! (even with the
QuickSheet addendum) are not nearly as extensive or as exhaustive as those
in the book Evidence Explained. Note: the models in QuickSheet (First
Revised Edition, 2007) are formatted in accordance with Evidence Explained,
and hence are closely aligned to the Legacy templates.

A factor in your selection decision should be about why you are purchasing a
book. If it is for use with Legacy and its Source Writer templates, you
should note that the templates coded in Legacy are coded to match the models
in Evidence Explained, and cannot be tailored to the models in Evidence!
(Although the sources can be overridden to manually make any desired
changes, I don't feel there is any advantage and could be confusing.) If you
are picking up the book to assist with understanding the myriad of citation
models in Legacy, you should seriously consider Evidence Explained. As
others have noted, there is an electronic edition available in PDF format,
which is only slightly more expensive than purchasing Evidence! + QuickSheet
together when you factor in shipping costs.

If you are not using the Source Writer models, and just want a general
reference for citations, either would be a good addition to your library. I
would suggest, though, that if you can find the books in a library, you
should spend an hour or two comparing the models in both books to the
records you have collected (or are considering collecting) and see which
best suits your needs, prior to making the final decision.

John:

Although the pricing for _Evidence!_ and the Quick Sheet is attractive, I
would caution against choosing them over the more expensive _Evidence
Explained_. As Geoff posted recently, there are significant changes between
the two books and trying to reconcile the Legacy templates against
_Evidence!_ would be an extremely confusing exercise. _Evidence!_ is 11
years old and a lot has changed in genealogy, genealogy software, and
sourcing practices in that time. Best to go with _Evidence Explained_, new,
used, or .pdf.

If so, you will find Evidence Explained at that location, along with the

I am not from the UK, but, I'm going to put in my 2 cents worth on the

I think that this book would be worth getting for anyone working on
genealogy and family history who cares about improving the way they
record the sources of their data. Evidence Explained (Citing History
Sources from artifacts to cyberspace) is a very heavy intimidating book
with 885 pages. What I like best about the book is that, interspersed
between the chapters of white pages, there are gray pages which contain
guidelines and examples. If you were to just skim through the gray
pages you might get some ideas that will make it worth the cost of the

 John,

Is the Software Books section of Legacy's online store available to you in
 the UK? ( http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=5 ) If
so, you will find Evidence Explained at that location, along with the
 quicksheet, and original Mills book.

Re: [LegacyUG] Evidence explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills

2008-06-11 Thread Michele Lewis
Even though Ms. Mills way of citing sources isn't globally known or
accepted, the most important thing is making sure that your citations are
CONSISTENT and that is why she wrote the book in the first place. As long
as you are using a CONSISTENT system then just stick with what you use. Ms.
Mills took the best of several different systems to make something that
would work for all of the unique things that genealogists cite (like census
records).

Here in the US, Ms .Mills' system has been the format used by most
professional genealogists though not everyone adheres to it and that is ok.
Consistency is the most important thing along with making sure you record
enough information that someone that comes behind you would be able to
easily find the source you cited.

I also adhere to Ms. Mills' formats in her book Professional Genealogy in
regard to the way reports are written. Again, it is consistency that is
important. If you do it the same way every time is it less likely you will
forget something.

 John,

According to other posts here from those who may know about such
things (Ron Ferguson, for e.g.) the book is pretty-much US-centric.

You can however purchase it (if you wish) from the legacy family tree
 store (http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/?Click=1440), click the
Software and Books link in the menu on the left of screen, and the
first option on screen is to Evidence Explained: Citing History
Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. It costs USD71.95 including
shipping (or postage and packing as we say!) That is approx EUR46 or
 GBP36.40).

There may be others on the list who will tell you more about whether
or not it is of much use for non-US sources, as I'm not necessarily
the best sourcer! The source writer on deluxe version of Legacy v7,
however, will help create these sources to this standard if you
require that, or you can ignore the source writer, and override with
your own preferred options, if you like.

 Regards,

 Dermot.

You can get it through Amazon.co.uk. It is actually cheaper (although
