2007-10-10 Thread Rob Miller
Hi Richard:

That was it! Between Find My Past.com and the Canada Library & Archives I
located both his emigration and immigration passenger lists.

23rd May 1913 was the day before he sailed. :)

Thanks!

Thanks for this great reminder Richard!

It make me leaf through my gr-grandmother [Flora (Wilkes) Miller]'s Common
Prayer book. But it turns out it actually belonged to my gr-grandfather
[William Miller]. For inside the cover is written:

23rd May 1913
W. Miller
>From Flo

This is not William's birthday, their anniversary, or the birthdates of
their children. BUT William did emigrate X number of years before Flora and
the boys did [who I know emigrated May 1915]. What if she gave him this book
just as he was leaving for Canada!!? It now gives me a date to start reading
microfilms of passenger lists!

Thanks!

2007-10-09 Thread Janis Gilmore
Hi, Cath,

I think we basically agree that the website is the published source of that
data. However, if it was transcribed online, the very pertinent data of
publication date and provenance should have been included with the
transcription. If it was not included, I would consider it perfectly
appropriate to write to the poster of the transcription and request a few
additional details - perhaps even scans, if available. And most important,
where is the Bible now?

I do agree, however, that the website is the published source of the
information, but it is citing another source, and as many details of the
original source as possible should be recorded with it.

If he had actually seen the Bible, then you are right that further

I found a lot of good obituaries and family history articles by simply
thumbing through the bibles of my elderly family members... some really
treasured information came that way.

Of course sourcing it was difficult but it still is reliable information.

IMHO, as the Legacy source template is now set up, I would consider
the author to be the transcriber (Jane Doe, trans.); the title is, e.g., Doe
Family Bible, 1787-1945, (i.e., date of earliest data-- latest), the
publishing info should include both publication info in re the Bible as a
Bible and more importantly the website, including the url, date, etc.

Since the source is a transcription on a website, the full details of the

Allen,

I haven't seen a reply to this, but forgive me if I missed one.

I would make the website the source. Use the name of the website
and the title of the record (such as "Access Genealogy, Bible
Records, FAMILY BIBLE OF JESSE BAIRD", put the URL in the
publication details and the date you accessed it. I would then
put the entire text in the Source Text.

When you use the Source for each person mentioned, you could put
in Source Detail the page number and the record such as "Page 2,
Births, Joseph B. Baird born Aug.25th 1854".

That is just my take, others may have different ideas.

Hi Richard,

Printing webpages with a PDF printer is a good idea. There are a lot
and some are free. I use Jaws PDF Creator which isn't but have used
PDF995. You can use that free if you don't mind the sponsor logo on
stuff. You install them and then they are listed with your other
printer/printers and you choose the one you want when you go to print
(from File > Print)

Legacy Deluxe can output reports to PDF. It can't be used to print a
web page to PDF.

It helps establish the time period of the bible and the printing method
(helping establish provenance) on old bibles those are usually the most
adorned and well printed pages in the bible.

Just helps you to authenticate it later and know that it is a bible from
that time frame.

Hi Jess,

Depending on the condition of the Bible and the binding, it may not
be possible to scan it. I'd make sure I had a digital camera and
check the photos are sharp before you leave. It does help to have a
tripod for this type of photography but I usually just check I've got
a sharp image.

Sometimes you get better copies from a camera than from scanning as
you don't want to break the binding or do any other damage.

I will be going back in two weeks to do this, as his

So, when I go to get this information -- I will not be

As a beginner (less than six months), I've not begun

Also, I saw that someone stated to also put in the

I will, undoubtedly, do what I feel is best for me,

Printing webpages with a PDF printer is a good idea. There are a lot
and some are free. I use Jaws PDF Creator which isn't but have used
PDF995. You can use that free if you don't mind the sponsor logo on
stuff. You install them and then they are listed with your other
printer/printers and you choose the one you want when you go to print
(from File > Print)

Legacy Deluxe can output reports to PDF. It can't be used to print a
web page to PDF.

Cheers,
Cathy

While a great option, the nearest copy store to my
hometown, and where the Bible in question and my
exhusband are located. is about 60+ miles away.

Taking my laptop and flatbed scanner seem to be what
works out there for "those folks".

While I've gotten offtopic, I appreciate the feedback,
because my original intent was to just go over with
pen and notebook and hand copy the information. --
Which I don't think I will be doing now, I'll go with
laptop and scanner in tow.

I *think* I can bare to be around him that long for
these purposes.
Alas, I stray off topic again. My apologies.

Forgive my ignorance, but what purpose does the first
pages of the old and new testaments serve? Do they
hold some significance?

Title page I understand.
As this is one of those huge white family Bible
editions, it has several pages in the front for the
family information, and I know it is written all over
in the front - I read over it many, many times when I
was actively involved in the family.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

If it corresponds to some of your existing
information, that you have previously proven as 100%
fact, I would include it, and in the sourcing
stipulate which facts corresponded and led you to
believe it to be true facts of your family, and then
cite the entire source ver betum.

Then, if you ever found contradictory information, you
would know why you input what you did, and that any of
it other than those that directly corresponded could
very well be illigitimate.

Or, if it is too much information to source input ver
betum, file it in a filing system and reference the
hard file. In your hard file, put two copies. One copy
unadulterated, the second copy notated as to what you
know as fact and what may not be so, etc.

2007-10-08 Thread Elaine O'Neill
I have a similar issue. I have xerox copies of pages from a family
bible. All I know for sure is it belonged to a member of the family. I
can't tell if the entries were all made at one time or not, although
it seems as though the earliest ones were and then others were made as
they happened. The bible either belonged to my 3Gr-grandparents or one
of their daughters, but it's impossible to tell. Right now I just have
it sourced as Hardy Family Bible Pages, with no detail. I know I
should be more detailed but I'm not sure just what to put. I have no
idea where the original bible is, or who had it when the pages were
copied. They've been copied many times as my copy is quite faint and
fuzzy. Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

2007-10-08 Thread John Carter
I can only add an "Amen" to seeing the original - or, in the case of a web
site, asking these questions of the person who posted the information.
Maybe they provide copies of the original pages?

I have only the marriage/birth/death pages from my maternal grandmother's
Bible. The rest could not be kept (too damaged by insects from poor
storage in the 20+ years between her death and my receiving the Bible),
but these pages were in the middle and thus the least damaged. Many of
the entries are in a similar hand (left-handed writer) and in pencil. The
last name is spelled "Rains" and "Raines" on the same page.

Some of the entries are in a childish hand - I can see a child either
filling in what she thought she knew or quizzing an available adult:
"Grandma, when was born?" "When did get married?". Some of the
more mature writing is in the death dates, with notations such as "66
years, 3 months, 4 days".

Obviously, I need other supporting data for the entries in the childish
hand and there are some that I may never have verification on: "Halice -
May 1, 1881 - Sep 3, 1881".

I would try to contact the poster of the facts, to get
or purchase a photocopy of the various pages AND the
title page of the bible. Until then, keep the printout
stored safely.

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

2007-10-08 Thread John Carter
I would suggest keeping a copy of the page(s), since we all know that web
sites come and go, even if it's just a domain change (my pages just moved
to their fourth domain in 12 years; hopefully this one is permanent).

There are two ways to save a web page on your PC.

1. Click File -> Save As -> give it a good name -> Type: Web Archive.
This saves the entire page with its graphics/photos as a single file
(saving the default type puts the graphics/photos in a separate folder).
Some pages won't save this way, so you also need to be able to use method
2.

2. Get one of the PDF "printer" programs and print each page to a PDF
document. This works for almost all pages. I use PDFFactory (purchased
for me by a former employer), but PDF995 also works and is only $9.95US.

My primary PC has a folder named "downloads" with a subfolder of
"genealogy". The genealogy folder has folders by state (some with county
subfolders) and name. If I downloaded a page, it will be in here.

Do make backups of your data - hard drives have moving parts and will
eventually die, expecially if the PC is on most of the time. I just spent
the better part of 3 days recovering tax and rental property data from a
friend's failed drive. The Staples flyer in our Sunday paper has a 500GB
Maxtor USB drive for $99 after rebate (limit of 10 rebates if you need 5
terabytes of storage ;-) I'll be picking one up today to replace the
120GB external drive I've been using.

In this case I don't believe these additional details are
available. Allen doesn't say which website he found it on, but
Googling gives these two:

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

2007-10-08 Thread Cathy

Hi Janis,

Allen hasn't seen the Bible - only a website with a transcription -
so the Bible itself isn't his source.

If he had actually seen the Bible, then you are right that further
details to identify the actual Bible are relevant.

Since the source is a transcription on a website, the full details of
the website are the relevant ones to record.

I would also inquire as to the date that the Bible was published and any
variations in handwriting and/or ink to help determine in what
generation those records were written. If it was published in, say
1850, then info was probably copied from another source (perhaps another
family Bible). The data may be 100% accurate, but it may not. It may
also have been summarized just for the owner/recipient of the Bible and
therefore be based on the best recollections of folks at the time. If
no print date is available, then analyze the handwriting and ink to see
if they are too similar. If so, they were not likely to have been
recorded near the time of the event.

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Bible Sourcing

2007-10-08 Thread Jennifer Crockett

Jennifer
