Re: [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children
Hi Listers I've had a few of these occurances. I've often added the person as an unlinked individual and then added whichever mother/father I know about. Legacy creates a marriage record, but the spouse is blank and I've set my defaults to keep reports blank when information is not entered, I don't like seeing unknown. This way I can still link in the other parent whenever the information becomes available. wrote I have a cousin, Mary, who had three out-of-wedlock children with three different men before she married and had six children in that marriage. For the three out-of-wedlock children, I do not know the names of the fathers. Legacy insists on adding a father before children can be entered, which is what I do not want. Why do you not want that? The children *had* biological fathers and if your data is to be accurate it should indicate that there were three different fathers, not one and the same, and that you do not know or do not care to indicate who the fathers were. Trying to do anything different would be, in effect, falsifying the records. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

However, the other bug re the children who are actually half siblings being reported as 1st cousins by the relationship calculator if the unknown fathers are left blank and not all showing in when show 1/2 kids is chosen, is not fixed in the current beta. RE: [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children
Legacy will automatically assign unknown to missing individuals in the childparentsgrand parents. So when I don't know anything about the previous generation I manually enter unidentified. If I do know the last name, e.g., Smith I will use the unidentified as the given name. Legacy will then show this individual with all of my other Smiths. Also you will be able to sort by unidentified, or :Smith, unidentified Sometimes it is just too confusing for me, especially when I was confused to start with. Re: [LegacyUG] Out-of-wedlock children
Hi Jon, All children have fathers even if they are unknown. You cannot add a child in Legacy without adding a marriage The father does not need to be added. You can choose in Options Customise to leave unknown fathers blank (Data format tab: Word for blank records) Your choice is to add all three out-of-wedlock children to the same unknown father (which you will probably prefer) OR to 3 different unknowns. If you do the latter, currently you'll have relationship problems with the relationship calculator. The children show as 1st cousins to one another, rather than as half-siblings and they won't all show when you choose to view 1/2 kids in Family View. This is a known and recorded bug of long standing. It is often easier to add the child as an unlinked individual and then link them to the relevant marriage. Hope that helps, Cathy At 10:24 AM 19/10/2006, you wrote: I posed this question once before, but am still having problems with the data entry.
