Thanks, Valerie. Your directions helped. Now to figure out how to make the
choice of fonts "stick".

That's because the Source options have now been moved to the "Additional"
tab->Source Options for the Book (it's the second tab after Contents).
All

of the items in your book will use the Source settings selected from the
"Additional" tab ->Source Options.

Is anyone else having a problem with customizing the font in a book
created

in the Publishing Center? I have a specific font selected in the
Descendant/Ancestor individual Report Options, and for a Multiple Lines of
Descent Report, but it will not "transfer" to the settings in the
Publishing

Center.

Selecting "Edit Settings For Current Chapter" shows the font I have
chosen,

but the font is incorrect in the print preview, when the report is done
through the Publishing Center. Individual Descendant/Ancestor reports,
done

outside of the Publishing Center, preview with the correct font.

Additionally, in the Publishing Center, a Multiple Lines of Descent Report
does not allow for the printing of sources - the entire "Sources" tab is
grayed out. Sources are allowed, however, when creating a Multiple Lines
of

Descent Report outside of the Publishing Center.

Version: 7.0.0.109

File maintenance - done.

Reboot system - done.

Reset and select specific fonts - done.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Judy

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center

2009-10-06 Thread Alastair Lack
I'm right in thinking that neither the location report (which we have
just discussed under another heading), nor a fan chart can be included
in the publishing center?
I find a fan chart valuable as it is by far the most compact way to
include all direct line ancestors on a single page, isn't it?
Is there as problem with it that I haven't noticed

Warm regards :-)

Judy,

Apologies for an incorrect reply in my previous post. I was certain that I
tested my report in the Publishing Centre, but obviously not, as the
generations *are* starting on a new page even when the "start each
generation on a new page is unchecked". You are correct in saying that the
Reset button does not correct this.

I must be getting tired! Yes, you need to report this as a bug, as Jenny

I have multiple chapters in a book - the descendant reports look
fine, with sources as endnotes after each chapter.
But the Ancestor reports continue to break after each generation -
starting each generation on a new page, even though I have
unchecked the box in the page layout report options to start a new

Creating an Ancestor Report, starting in the "Books and Other"

Anyone have any suggestions on how to eliminate the page breaks in
an Ancestor Report when using the Publishing Center?

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Descendant Book Report

2009-05-09 Thread Alastair Lack
I've decided that the downsides of using the book are greater than the upsides.
You've highlighted one. However, I also want to put in fan charts -
otherwise multiple lines of descent are difficult to understand. And I
want to put in one or two word.doc files.
So I've got round all the problems by running each report separately,
composing pdfs. I also composed my introduction, copyright,
acknowledgements etc. separately, and put all together using a pdf
creator that can accept Legacy's pdfs. At that point I insert the page
numbers and correct the contents.

That way I have complete control over the output.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Descendant Book Report

2009-05-06 Thread Ruth Nerud
I unchecked it inside Publishing Center, saved the settings, and load the
settings for each chapter so they are consistent. I've checked each chapter
individually and start new page after each generation is unchecked.

I also note the spacing is fine if I do a Preview of my book, but when it
converts to rtf there are no spaces between the facts and the events. And
here I thought all these things have been corrected in the last build. I've
got a lot of editing to do in my book.

How did you uncheck this? Did you do it outside of Publishing Center? Or
did you do it inside of Publishing Center via "Edit Setting for Current
Chapter..."? You should do the latter.

If you did this and it still doesn't help, then you might have a bug

better uses for my time. (The fact that Legacy provides txt or rtf
file formats for reports suggests they have been trying to meet
this "need.")

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same list/thread. I don't
post there much, but I sure learn a lot. I haven't been subscribed
there long, and so didn't know about the previous discussions. I quit
reading the thread when people started pointing out that you need to
actually write your own reports. :-)

I suspect I'm not the only reasonably intelligent person left
wondering why all the work involved (using Legacy, TMG, or any
other program) would be preferable to starting with the best tool
for the job (a word processor).

Personally, I've been giving this a lot of thought since this has come
up recently "here" and "there". I know I wouldn't be able to keep
things straight in my head if I didn't put everything into Legacy --
and I still tend to get confused sometimes -- but I've only been doing
this for a few years, and pretty much started with Legacy, so I don't
have the massive input situation that you do.

For my immediate purposes -- reports for family members and curious
cousins -- the Legacy reports are quite sufficient. Most of them
don't even care about sources -- they just want to be able to say
"Kris said so." :-) But should my goals change, I completely
agree with you.

I am heartened to know that the tide of publicly expressed opinion
is finally turning in my direction .

Connie

It is most encouraging. :-)

Absolutely. I too couldn't agree more. That is the point I was trying to make
(along with answering a specific question as to why Legacy reports weren't
sufficient).

But if we are talking about the same list, the recent thread to which you refer
was a pleasant departure from most previous threads about databases. There
have been several discussions over the past few years about how some databases
(or at least TMG) CAN do anything a word processor can do, or can do it with
minimal tweaking of a text-based download to a word processor. Between those
threads and other discussions in related venues, I was often left wondering if
many "professionals" had the secret keys to something I just couldn't figure
out. Yes, I could probably learn to do it with TMG, or start with a Legacy

RE: [LegacyUG] Publishing papers and Using Legacy

2009-03-26 Thread GeneJ (GM)
Hi Janis, Connie, all:
Hope you don't mind if I post here a few thoughts shared with another list.
I'm a lay person, a student of the craft. I'm also one of those who would
like to see software developers take it up a notch when it comes to the
reporting genealogical software generates.

I'm software challenged. In another life, I was a power 1-2-3 user, and had
the occasion to achieve some skill in the old desktop publishing programs.
Ultimately, others were commissioned to port those efforts into one of the
then new relational database programs, still later into a proprietary
system. So, I've had the experience to observe how different technologies
converge in skillful hands.

I was never really able to transfer my own "free form" skills to genealogy
software. All along, I've been recording data in the software, but for the
most part, my sources took the form of "research notes," either stored
separately in the software, or recorded in another place. Occasionally, I'd
max out the storage space allotted by one software program, and I'd find
another program that could store more notes.

When Mill's published _Evidence!_, a cousin suggested that if we were going
to work together on some family research, "we" were going to use Mills as a
guide for evaluating the evidence and documenting our findings.

Back then ... I had hard time figuring out how to record Mills-styled
citations in genealogical software. I ended up creating word processing
documents. I'd scan or capture a piece of "evidence" into the word
processor, then write out the citation and/or bibliographic entry in the
same document -- I'd send my cousin a copy, then store the "original" and
copies in a set of organized computer folders. Pretty soon I was including
short analytical comments in those files and adding a related group of
"separately consulted" citations.

About the time I acquired _Evidence!_, I also picked up a copy of LeClerc
and Hoff, _Genealogical Writing in the 21st Century_ (2006). For those of
you who aren't familiar with Hoff and LeClerc, it's a short guide to writing
narrative reports in _Register_ style. (Hoff is the editor of the
corresponding NEHGS journal; LeClerc is NEHGS Director of Special Projects).

Just as I was creating word processing documents and memos about my sources,
I started creating word processing reports about the subject families. At
some point I realized that I had two sets of books. One set was the record
in my genealogy software, the other was my "real" work-- those two sets of
records didn't match very well.

With much help from new features implemented by software developers, I
learned enough techniques so that sources could be recorded in my genealogy
software. Unfortunately, even though I could record the source and its
citations, I couldn't get the software to store the corresponding "records"
from my narrative reports.

If it makes any sense, I could feed my "record" in _Register_ style to the
software, but when I called up a narrative report from the program, and
asked for _Register_ style, what the software produced was not much like the
report I had originally written.

LeClerc and Hoff go a long way. Their work uses straight talk to set out the
three parts/features of _Register_ style family group reporting. They even
include *templates* for how to present both the leading "vitals"
paragraph(s) and concluding list of children, and discuss essential
alternatives. These two parts I consider the core "genealogical" summaries.
Between those two "core" presentations is a section for biographical data.
It's the "core" genealogical summaries/presentations I've had so much
difficulty storing in my genealogical software.

Software developers can only do so many things at once. As users, we are a
demand lot. We want advanced picture technologies, incredible charts, web
publishing, _all_ the portability the world has to offer, etc., etc., etc.
Along the way, I hope a few more users find, as I have, an increasing desire
to store comprehensive, well written _Register_ or classic styled "vitals
paragraphs" and "lists of children" in the genealogical software we use.

Just as I don't expect every user to care for or implement Mills'
_Evidence!_ techniques, I don't expect every user will care for or want to
implement _Register_ style reporting. On the other hand, for those users who
do, and others who would like to try, I'm hoping more software developers
will give us a "helping hand." We need it.

I wrote, "I don't expect to enter random data and then pull a wonderfully
fashioned report from the software. If I push myself, however, to develop
the report, systems should be expected to retain a reasonable amount of my
effort."

Tom,

The issue is not entering data into Legacy. As I said in my original
response to Janis, Legacy is great for storing data. It can store
anything I want to take the time to put in. I would probably put in
most everything that I find, as I find it, if I didn't already have 16
two-inch binders and two almost full 4-drawer file cabinets from over 15
years of serious research (plus 10+ years of dabbling before that).

The problem is getting the data out in research reports, biographies,
NGSQ style family history narratives, etc. that meet certification
standards or are potentially publishable in a major genealogy journal.
The SourceWriter templates help with that, to the extent that they work.
But they don't consistently work (most egregious in this context is the
lack of properly functioning subsequent citations), and even if they
did, I would still have to download and rewrite a ton of stuff in a word
processor to get it "right."

To see the type of report writing we're talking about, see the BCG
website at:

http://www.bcgcertification.org/skillbuilders/worksamples.html

By clicking on the various links under Case Studies and Proof Arguments,
Genealogies, and Research Reports, you can view several examples which
meet the standards to which Janis asked if any Legacy UG members were
aspiring. I don't know to what extent these requirements apply in Great
Britain, Australia, etc., but I suspect there are similar high standards
in existence, or emerging, amongst professionals in countries other than
the USA.

Could I put all my raw data, including Notes, into Legacy, then fiddle
around with an rtf export to a word processor until I got it where I
wanted it? Probably. But I'm now playing the back 9 of life, so to
speak, and it is far less time consuming for me to write "from scratch,"
than do all that cutting, pasting, rewriting, and fixing.

I do agree that I wish Millenia would give us some indication of what
problems they have actually prioritized. I know there is reluctance to
give a timeline, and I understand the reasons for that, but it would be
nice to know (for example) whether fixing Subsequent Citations is
priority A, priority B, priority C, or nowhere on the list.

I could not agree more. Imagine having a degree downloaded from a PC. Yes, I

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing papers and Using Legacy

2009-03-25 Thread Cathy

I think that this discussion is mixing apples with oranges.

Legacy is a genealogical database program which shows relationships
and allows one to enter the data and sources found as a result of a
search. It is an excellent program that allows for a great deal of
customization and has a variety of reports which can be issued. But
it is a relational **database** program!

What Connie and Hugh appear to want to write is an analysis of some
segment of their research which they have done and which details
their conclusions. [And, guys, please feel free to correct me if I am
wrong here.]As for writing an analytical report which discusses
one's conclusions and the facts behind those conclusions, yes, a word
processing package seems to me to be the the more appropriate tool to use.

I have used different genealogical database programs over the years.
And I find that Legacy is top of the line as far as I'm concerned.
And if I am going to publish a modified register report as is
required for NEHGS, then I would use Legacy. However, if I am going
to write up an analysis of one issue in my database and discuss how I
came to my conclusions, then I would use a word processing program.

No one program ever meets ALL one's needs! So, if I may suggest,
why not decide what you want to do and then pick the program that
will meet your needs?

Happy Hunting! And Have Fun Writing!

I think that is the point that Connie is making, precisely. We should not
plan or expect our body of work to come straight out of the genealogical
software. The software is there to keep it all organized and easily
accessible. The rest is up to us.

I should clarify that I really like Legacy. I like it even better than TMG,
and I happily used TMG for many years. The fact that neither of them can
write for me is okay with me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing papers and Using Legacy

2009-03-25 Thread CE WOOD
There are so many, many ways to put information together that a word
processing/publishing program is probably the only one that can do almost
everything that anyone wants. Just a simple example, is placing graphics where
you want and making each of them the size you want. Of course, the spell
check/grammar abilities, margins and orientation can be changed page to page,
fonts you like, et alia ad infinitum.

This is not Legacy's strong point, and most would prefer they concentrate on
the basics - relationships calculators, known errors that interfere with
program operations, and the like. They have a hard enough time trying to do
that.

  Connie,

Thank you for being honest and brave enough to say this publicly.
After years of working with three different software programs, I have
arrived at similar conclusions. In my opinion, Legacy is a wonderful
tool for organizing research results and helping identify what's
missing but it's an almost impossible task for any software program to
also auto-write a family history. I think this is a worthy topic for

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing papers and Using Legacy

2009-03-25 Thread Thomas Herson

Hugh and Connie,

Please help me understand exactly what information you are not able to enter
in Legacy. Using the several "Notes" areas, you should be able to enter any
text, census transcipts, deeds, etc.
After using the program for several years I've never even considered
downloading books to a word processing program. I've been able to enter
everything I want directly into Legacy.

I do have a major problem with the folks who run the company not being able
to give sstraight answers about missing elements of the software and
providing a way to find out what is being worked on with regard to "bugs."

I think this is a worthy topic for
the LUG and by all means should be heard by the Millenia folks. It's
up to them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing papers and Using Legacy

2009-03-25 Thread Janis L Gilmore
Connie,

This is precisely my experience - although I do not limit it to Legacy. I
felt the same way when I was using TMG.

I create all narratives "by hand," occasionally kicking out an easy report
for the use of a family member with casual interest.

I do, from time to time, create an index report as a form of paper backup
for my work (although I do back up to Mozy, an LaCie external hard drive,
and Dropbox).

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center - Descendant Book Report

Along the same lines as Thomas Henson: I can not get the sources to appear
at the end of each chapter.

1) New Book

2) Contents: Four Chapters (each a different line, based on MRIN)

3) Additional: Source Options>Print Source Citations> as endnotes after
each chapter>Save

4) Preview

All of the sources are after the Final Chapter with no indication to which
line they refer.

Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center Books/Footnotes

2008-08-17 Thread Thomas Herson

Two problems with displaying sources in books:

1. I have chosen the source citations to ne displayed as footnotes at the
bottom of each page. For the most part this works fine however the book
displays 3 source citations in the section of the book called Source
Citations. The citations are numbered 1, 2, and 3. These names of these
three citations do not agree with footnotes 1, 2, or 3 following any of the
chapters. How do I find out what is causing these 3 citations to print so I
can fix them.

2. I have discovered that the footnotes cited on the last page of each
chapter of a book do NOT show on the bottom of that last page but instead
are shown on the first page of the next chapter.

To cite a particular example. footnotes 1565 and 1566 of chapter X do
not show at the bottom of the last page of chapter X. Instead they show as
the first two footnotes at the bottom of the first page of chapter Y
followed by footnotes 1, 2, 3, etc. that are applicable to chapter Y.

It apopears that there are real problems with the book feature's
footnote/source displays.

Have Legacy's tech people already discovered this?

Graham,

I have just checked and it works perfectly. Do you have Javascript enabled
in your Browser? The site uses quite a lot of Javascript.

If you hover over "Blogs" in the menu bar and click "Ron's Blogs" this takes
you to the item on using Legacy Search. In the left hand panel there is an
index/link to all the pages.

2008-01-27 Thread Jackie King

Ron -

I think the problem was no "s" in the url

http://www.fergy.co.uk

instead of

http://www.fergys.co.uk/

When I used the URL in your sig, I got there.

Cheers,

Jackie

Yes, I understand about the requirement for web space. I guess the basis of
my initial question was because when I used FTM, I noticed that it seemed so
easy to just click on a link and have web space provided. I never got so far
as to actually publish to my own web page through FTM, but my cursory
exploration into creating a web page at that time, made it seem easy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing to Web

2008-01-25 Thread Barbara Ford
I suppose the first question I need to answer for myself, then, is
what I want to put on the web. I'm not so much interested in merging
my information out there with anyone else who has posted materials on
my family lines. In fact, I'm not interested in that at all. I was
hoping to be able to create a clean, attractive web site that I could
direct relatives to, as a "product" of my research. It would need to
be easily revised/edited.

Barbara,

Obviously you do need web space on which to store your pages and often your own
ISP will provide space free of charge - hence that suggestion. There are many
other ways of getting free access to server space eg. Rootsweb.

It is not particularly difficult and it may be that detailed questions are best
answered on WUL which was specifically set up to answer all questions relating
to creating and putting webpages on the web. To register see:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/ where you will find many people willing
to help.

Hi Barbara,

What exactly are you wanting to put on the web? If you want to use
Legacy to generate some pages, or create some of your own, you may like
to investigate Rootsweb's Freepages (see my pages there via the link in
my signature below). Or if you want to generate a GEDCOM file from
Legacy and upload that somewhere, Rootsweb has WorldConnect for that.
All free.

Freepages has a great support network in place, in the form of a list
like this one where your peers help when you.

See http://www.rootsweb.com/ for more information about both of these.

Hope this helps. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Publishing to Web

2008-01-24 Thread Debbie Freeman
Hello Barbara,

It depends on what your choice is.

Technically some are harder, and more expensive.

I have limited computer skills myself.

So I choose the web site called Werelate.

You might want to check it out as a possibility.

They have a presentation to explain their site.

It is a wiki, similar to Wikipedia.

It was a very simple GEDCOM upload.

It is a free web site, has more options than some, and very easy to edit.

The other thing I like about it is that it can be a "family project".

Great for cousins to work together.

I registered for free, and then uploaded the GEDCOM file.

Good Luck

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Locations index not printing - Yes it is a bug

2007-06-01 Thread Cathy

OK
I've reproduced it finally.
The first time there wasn't any location index I checked the FGS I
was using and realised that family didn't have any locations. Changed
to someone else and the location index was still missing.

I've got the Location index back by closing Legacy and deleting
book.usr (in the Legacy program folder)
and starting again.

Leon, when using the Publication Centre, there is only one place to
check for adding the Location Index and that is on the Additional Tab
under Indexes.

Hope that helps.
I haven't time currently to check whether I can reproduce the index
disappearing.

FW: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center Locations index not printing - Yes it is a bug

2007-06-01 Thread Belinda

Hi Cathy

It is funny - I've just tried reproducing it again too. And I can't. I know
that I had ticked the box for the location index as I also generate a table
of contents which I distinctly remember stated Names and Location Index as
the very last item. However there was a Name index but no Location index. I
was so confused that I double checked everything to make sure that it wasn't
just me and it happened many times. I was really surprised to see the post
by Leon which described a similar problem that I was having. I only use the
report button however and not the publishing centre (I've only just realized
the difference) and I was still having the same fault that Leon was when
trying to create a location index.

However, I just tried going into the publication centre to try to replicate
Leon's fault and I was able to in this location even though I couldn't when
in the reports area. I was almost surprised when I found that I could
replicate the fault in the publication centre.

I'll go and report it as a fault now and hopefully someone at Legacy will
also be able to replicate it.

Regards,

Belinda

Hi Belinda,

To get a bug fixed, it has to be reported (see Legacy Home Tab -
Report a bug) and acknowledged - ie someone on staff needs to be able
to reproduce it - and then it can be addressed by the programmers.

I can't reproduce this bug at all.
It's possible that the tick in the Index Options for Location Index
has stopped being sticky - though I haven't found that. When you
haven't got the Location Index as expected, have you checked that it
was selected?

In the Publication Centre, you need to check the index on the Additional
Tab.

I don't know for certain, but it is quite possible that the text and images

Hi Jane,

I just tried this out. I included several Ancestor and Descendant Charts.

No problem here with the index. All charts are indexed. So it doesn't
appear to be a bug.

The index is controlled by the Index section on the Additional tab in
the Publication Centre, not the Options for the particular Chapter.

Since you are getting some index and not all, I'm sorry, I don't know
what your problem may be.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center

2007-03-15 Thread Brian/Support

Anne,

Set the Uppercase Surnames on the Options Tab of the Publishing Center
not in the individual report options.

For consistency in the "book" the Pub Center produces there are a number
of options that are applied to all the chapters rather than set inside
the individual chapter report options.

I have three lines in this book and i want to write an introduction for each one and place it before each one. While I can do that for the first one, I don't see anyway of doing it for the other two.

The Help section says that if you produce the book in a RTF, then you can make modifications.. but, won't that interfere with the page numbering and sources ?

Sorry to ask so many questions..

Anne,

The page numbering should sort itself out within MS Word also, as Ron mentioned.

RE: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center

2007-03-04 Thread ronald ferguson

Anne,

There would appear to be a bug in the Centre's Edit facility. You seem to be
correct in that even if the Report Options>Format is set to "Upper Case
Surnames" it is not applied.

If the output is saved as an rtf and then opened in Open Office (and I
imagine MS Word is the same), after editing the pages are renumbered
automatically by the WP.

I am trying out the Publishing Center on Legacy 6 Deluxe. I have several
questions that I am hoping someone can address.

If I try and do a Multiple Descendant Report, I changed the options to make
the surnames uppercase which it will not do, within the Publishing
Center. If I try and make a Multiple Descendant Report outside of the
Publishing Center, the surnames ARE capitalized. Why won't it do it within
the Publishing Center?

Is there anyway to remove "Produced by Legacy on {date} on every page in
the book?

In the Multiple Descendant Report, ( within the Publishing Center) I want
to know if there is any way of inserting a page to separate the lines of
descent. I have three lines in this book and i want to write an
introduction for each one and place it before each one. While I can do that
for the first one, I don't see anyway of doing it for the other two.

The Help section says that if you produce the book in a RTF, then you can
make modifications.. but, won't that interfere with the page numbering
and sources ?

Sorry to ask so many questions..

Anne

Legacy and Vista (RE: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center, Ancestor Book Reports, Multiple Parents)

2007-03-03 Thread Mark Lang
Rosemary,
Please remember to change the Subject heading. Your RFH (Request For Help)
had nothing to do with the subject title.

I have Legacy working OK in Vista Home Premium, the only problem being there
is no Help file while the developers convert the hlp format to something
more compatible.

Kind Regards,
Mark

And Susan is right, I double-checked as well and it can't be done. I should
have checked first rather than leaving it to memory, so I retract my
suggestion on this one. Big Oops, sorry. Better get back to the Beta group
and see if this can be implemented.

This is fiddly but is possible.
For example,

Start Publication Centre. On Contents tab, add Ancestor book
Now click Options tab, click [Page Setup] button. Click Footers tab.
Uncheck Include box under Report Credit Information, [OK], click Contents
tab.

To verify, click [Preview] button, there should be no "Produced by Legacy on
{date}" on any page.

[LegacyUG] Publishing Center

2007-03-03 Thread anbrooks
I am trying out the Publishing Center on Legacy 6 Deluxe. I have several
questions that I am hoping someone can address.

If I try and do a Multiple Descendant Report, I changed the options to make the
surnames uppercase which it will not do, within the Publishing Center. If I
try and make a Multiple Descendant Report outside of the Publishing Center, the
surnames ARE capitalized. Why won't it do it within the Publishing Center?

Is there anyway to remove "Produced by Legacy on {date} on every page in the

Ron,
It doesn't work in the same Publishing Center report. I just tested
it. If you select the ancestor report for Joe Smith with ParentSet1
Preferred, then close the publishing center to prefer (Select)
ParentSet2, return to publishing center and add another ancestor
report for Joe Smith, Legacy simply uses the existing Preferred Set
for BOTH reports.

I am guessing the only work around is to make a duplicate copy of Joe
Smith, link him to the second set of parents, and leave the original
Joe Smith linked to the first set of parents. The RINs will be
different for these two Joe Smiths, hope that isn't a problem. But
then in Publishing Center, Rob can select these two different Joe
Smiths and it will look as if they are the same person, but with two
ancestor lineages.

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center, Ancestor Book Reports, Multiple Parents

2007-03-03 Thread Susan Daily

Rob,
To continue with this workaround suggestion, I would suggest you do
this in a copy of your family file. (I simply dragged a copy using
File Manager/Windows Explorer into the same Legacy Data folder and it
was renamed Copy of MyFamilyFilename.fdb, then opened up that in
Legacy to run my test.) Just remember you are in the Copy file, and
don't make any data changes other than a duplicate copy of your
grandmother. To make it easier to duplicate her, open your
grandmother's Individual view. Click on Save. Then add new unlinked
individual. Click on each heading and it will repeat what it just saw
in the previous Individual View. Events will have to be copied over
one at a time. After you complete this, go to the adoptive parents,
and add her as a daughter (link to an existing person), and remove the
real copy of her.

I think this will work. Hope it gives you an idea, at least!

The issue as I understand it is that Rob would like to create these reports
as part of a book in the Publishing Center and have them all generated at
once, some reports in the book with one set of parents and the other
reports

with other parents.

While it is possible to have more than one set of parents in Legacy,
reports

will only work for the preferred set.

Rob,

I must be missing something here as I don't really see what you are getting
at. If you really wish to have two separate reports for natural and
adopting

parents I have previously suggested that you unlink, create the report, and
then relink in turn each set. If that is not working for you then I
definitely do not understand what you are after. It certainly worked for me
when I tested the method.

Perhaps you can illustrate with specifc examples ( by all means change
names

should you so wish).

Rob,

I must be missing something here as I don't really see what you are getting
at. If you really wish to have two separate reports for natural and adopting
parents I have previously suggested that you unlink, create the report, and
then relink in turn each set. If that is not working for you then I
definitely do not understand what you are after. It certainly worked for me
when I tested the method.

Perhaps you can illustrate with specifc examples ( by all means change names
should you so wish).

Well, I tried some of these suggestions, but am not satisfied. No matter
what I do, the ancestor book for my Grandmother prints with the current set
of parents I have selected in Legacy. Same for pedigree charts, etc. This
makes it impossible to set up a repeatable book in the Publishing Center
for

this branch of my family.

My workaround is to do an ancestor book for each of my grandparents' 6
parents, but I still have this problem with the Pedigree charts I want to
include (which I'll handle by leaving a placeholder in the book and
printing

separately.

Thanks for the response. Hopefully this is something they can look at for a
future version of Legacy.

Rob,

I think you can achieve what you require by unlinking from the natural
parents, create ancestty report, relinking and then unlinking from adopting
parents, create second report. When finished don't forget to relink.

Rob,

Have you considered taking the scenic route? Create a chapter with the
biological parents - unlink them, and link in the adopted parents - then
create a chapter on the adopted parents.

Sorry if we misinterpreted your mission.

Hello Rob,

You can still have all the information for the family history in the one
file, it is just going to be separated. When you enter her adopted parents,
enter them as New Unlinked Individuals and create a second tree in the one
file. Then when you create your Book, you can then create a chapter on just
the adopted parent line. You can probably even add the adopted parents as
parents with relationships set to adopted for the child, in which case they
can all be in the same tree.

Kind Regards,

Mark

My Grandmother's mother died a month after she was born. She was sent to
live with a friend while her two older sisters ended up growing up in an
orphanage.

I am getting ready to produce a book for her and my Grandfather detailing
their family history. I would like to have a chapter of my Grandfather's
Ancestors, a chapter of my Grandmother's natural ancestors and a chapter of
my Grandmother's "adopted" ancestors. This is a big deal because who she
knows as her parents are her adopted parents and she is as interested or
more interested in that line than her natural line.

I can't figure out how to add two ancestor books to a publishing center
projects for one person, each using a different set of parents. Am I
missing

something? I'd much rather have an integrated book than have to print them
as three separate books!

Thanks!

RE: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center, Ancestor Book Reports, Multiple Parents

2007-03-01 Thread Mark Lang

Mark

Parents

Am I missing
something? I'd much rather have an integrated book than have to print them
as three separate books!

Thanks!

Having been in the computer business from 1967 (not a typo) to 1996, I do
think of such things. Since Legacy will already do grayscale conversions,
it doesn't seem like much additional code to me.

It was a suggestion as to what would make my life easier (and those of many
others) ... and I'm willing to let the Legacy designers and programmers
decide whether it's useful ... it's certainly doable.

The Publishing Center is terrific ... but I have a suggestion that would
make it even better.

When outputting to/for a black/white printer, Legacy suggests converting
photos to grayscale.

I agree, but it can be an arduous task ... I copy all the photos in
C:/Legacy/Pictures to C:/Legacy/Pictures_GS. Then I use Irfanview (free
and good) to batch convert the entire folder to grayscale. Next, I set the
Publishing Center path to the new folder and have it find all pictures ...
since the names are the same, it's quick and easy from that point.

But wouldn't it be nice to have a tick box in the Publishing Center for
"Convert all pictures to grayscale"? Legacy could then convert each
picture as it is queued up for printing ... leaving the original pictures
in place and unchanged ... with no need for another folder or changing
folder paths.

Any comments?

[LegacyUG] Publishing your work

2007-01-02 Thread Alastair Lack

Dear Friends,

We've discussed at some length publishing work in book form - and I
have used Lulu quite a bit now - see www.lulu.com/alastair. I have no
commercial interest (declaration!)

The one snag is that it will only accept Times or Arial fonts for
conversion to the required pdf, and the Legacy pdf converter doesn't
embed fonts either.

Should anyone like to try to use this way of publishing, I'd just like
to offer to do the necessary conversion if you use other fonts such as
Georgia - I have the necessary Adobe Acrobat, and have got it to work
nicely. Just write to me off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] It would of
course be in complete confidence and at no charge.

I'm busy till 1st Feb, but after that any time

Warm regards :-)

Alastair Lack

[LegacyUG] Publishing center book

2006-11-02 Thread Nancy Bender
I am creating a book for a relative and am trying to use the publishing
center. I have chosen the Family Picture Tree, the Pedigree Chart, the
Ancestor book report and the Calendar as my chapters. When I preview it, all
is in order except the table of contents. It is in the right place but it
lists the Scources as being after the fourth generation and the name index
after the fifth. They are really at the end of the book as they should be
but why is the table of contents incorrect? I looked at just an ancestor
book report without using the publishing center and it was correct.

Thank you,
Nancy

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing Center - book margins aka gutter fold

2006-10-31 Thread Chris Coward
My inclination would be to print to rtf. Open it in a wordprocessor that
supports gutter margins, refine and finalise your book and layout, THEN
convert to PDF for sending to Lulu. Some wordprocessors output to PDF or you
could invest in a printer driver that outputs to PDF. I use ExpertPDF
(http://www.visagesoft.com/)

I went through the archives (actually saved emails in my GMAIL
folder), and have not seen this particular question raised. I also
read the Help section on Margins.

I am using Legacy Deluxe 6.0.0.110. I have just started playing with
the Publication Center. I am hoping to create a PDF file that I can
send to Lulu.com and have published as a book. I would like to have a
binder margin -- that is, to make the left side of an open book have a
larger right hand margin (say by 1.25") and the right side of an open
book to have the opposite. Just like we can move the page number
either to the left or right corner, depending on if the page is odd or
even, we should be able to do the same with margins. In Microsoft
Word, it is called a Gutter Fold, with inside and outside margins.

I've checked the page setup options, and this feature does not seem to
be there. (I played with Duplex, but I don't understand how that
works.) Do I need to recommend gutter fold for an enhancement, or is
there a workaround? I was hoping to publish in December this year!

Thank you,
Susan Daily

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing

2006-10-18 Thread Alastair Lack

Yvonne,

A common mistake is not to remember that the startup file has to be
index.html named exactly in that way, and in the root directory.
Index.html will not work.

When you say 'could previously link them', do you mean upload them -
using ftp or whatever?

What do you mean by 'link' and exactly what difficulty have you got?

Warm regards

Alastair

I advise to reinstall Legacy 5, because on W98(SE)
there is so much trouble with memory problems with Legacy 6. Some W98 users
seems to have a configuration thet accept Legacy 6, but as far as I know here in
Holland most users of W98 had to grade up to WXP to work with Legacy

I was wandering what operating system you are

This sounds link a W98SE type resource

I run a P3 with 512M and still ran into this

It would show some pictures, but not all... or
error 7 out
The problem is the way W98 does memory

I upgrade to W2K, which does it like XP (sort

I still miss my W98.
