Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

2007-04-02 Thread Ron Bernier
I have to honestly say, of all the mailing lists that I subscribe to, and there
a quite a few, I have never seen any list other than the Legacy have so many
people subscribe who have no clue as to what a mailing list is, or even that
they are subscribing. I really think Legacy needs to put a new subscription
method in place. After you initially subscribe, you receive a message
describing the purpose of the list. If you want to receive mail from the list,
you have to respond. If you don't respond, you are not subscribed. I also wish
people would take a few minutes to try to learn what a mailing list is and how
it works. That also would help to eliminate some of these messages. Bottom
line, if you don't want to receive email from the list, don't subscribe.

Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

2007-04-02 Thread Winfrey Jim
Well said Ron. In the same vein, it would be great if, when somebody
wants off the Legacy list, that many, many people would refrain from
sending instructions on how to unsubscribe and let Sherry and company
take care of it, or at least, send it privately so we don't have so
many meaningless e-mails to go through.

Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

I agree with Ron that Legacy needs a more proactive form of registration
such as he suggests.

I also feel that those of us on the list should leave the responses to these
poor lost souls up to the Legacy staff who monitor the list. I have seen
times in the past when the people telling someone how to unsubscribe
generated many pages which were more annoying than the person requesting to
get off the list.

Ron,
Don't always blame the poor lost souls. I had an email from some
American stock market tipper at the weekend that contained
[LegacyUserGroup] in the subject, on its' own. An obvious piece of spam!
I think there are email address harvesters out there who subscribe
unwitting people to mailing lists just for the fun of it.

Your suggestion about confirmation of subscription requests is a good
one, and would help to stop some of it. Lately, most of the lists I have
subscribed to have adopted the same or similar approach.

Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

2007-04-02 Thread David Wilkinson
I've often wondered why Legacy doesn't use Yahoo Groups. I subscribe to
other mailing lists via Yahoo Groups and have been very pleased. The
user can select whether to receive HTML or plain text, whether to
receive individual messages or to receive a digest. If they would rather
they can choose to receive nothing at all and just log into the Yahoo
Group website and review the messages online.

If the user chooses the digest mode, the messages are grouped and sorted
so the reader doesn't have to wade through a lot mail that they may have
no interest in. When using the HTML/digest mode, each grouping is
indexed with the message header, you can jump directly the message of
interest.

I believe the group moderator can either allow or prohibit attachments.

Yes, there is some advertising attached, but to me it is very unobtrusive.

Now that I've said all this, I'm sure someone will offer a reason NOT to
use Yahoo Groups.

Just something too consider.

I agree. This user list is just fine without Yahoo.

As was suggested, since some people can't/won't pay attention to what
they're signing up for, a 2-step signup process might be useful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Receiving Wrong emails

2007-04-01 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Carmel,

I am receiving your customers inquiries at my E-Mail address. So far
this morning I have received 15 different E mail. Could you please
rectify this situation.

You must have signed up to this discussion list to receive the posts
from it - posts are what we call emails sent to a list like this.
This list is for users of the Legacy program to help each other find the
answers to their queries about using the program; the vast majority of
posts are from users of the program, though staff at Legacy also read
the list and contribute when they see a need.

If you don't want to be subscribed to the list, follow the instructions
that are at the end of *every* post to unsubscribe yourself.

However, if you are using Legacy for your genealogy, you may like to
stick around and read what comes in. This is a very helpful list, and
you can learn a lot just from reading other peoples' questions and
answers. Possibly even things that you didn't realise would help you
use the program effectively.

The list can be busy at times (though it is not the busiest one I belong
to by far), so you may like to set a filter in your email program to
pick out the list mail as it comes in and redirect them to a folder
separate from your other mail, so you can concentrate on the list when
you are ready to, and ignore it the rest of the time. I do this for
each of the many (at least 20) lists I belong to - each has its own
filter and folder, so they're all separate from each other and away from
my personal mail.

I can tell from the headers of your post that you are using Outlook
Express - I have some instructions on my personal web site for setting a
filter in OE (and for a few others as well); they're written for a
different list, but are easily adapted by substituting this list's
address for the other one. You'll find the instructions at
http://www.geocities.com/wendy_m_howard/How-to.htm#RuleFilter

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
