RE: [LegacyUG] Report output
Anne, Yes. Windows allows one to use Word, Open Office, Wordpad or Notepad or any other text editor as the default for program for any text file. I have previously explained in this thread how to set Windows if you wish to go this route. Alternatively, with Legacy, you can over-ride the Windows default by putting any of the programs which will read text into the Launch Screen of OptionsCustomise. RE: [LegacyUG] Report output
Cut Paste from Notepad just gives a plain text file in Word - with a lot to do afterwards. I think it was Sherry who suggested outputting to an HTML file and this can then be opened in MS Word etc. In windows explorer, right click on the file and select open with... The Book reports can be output to RTF files which will open with whatever word processor you are using and they are fully formatted and set up to add the index and content pages, unlike using Notepad. Elizabeth, I tried to do as your suggested. I put the path to MS Works into the OptionCustomizeLaunch. It did not take me directly to Works, but after I clicked save, it saved it in Notepad again. I may not be doing something right..path names have never been my strong point. I am using the free download of Legacy to try to determine if I wish to change from TMG. Ironically, my problem with TMG is report output. Some kind of conversion error problem. I am wondering if the fact that I am not using the full version that prevents me from setting it up properly. RE: [LegacyUG] Report output
Jane, Your main problem here seems to have nothing to do with Legacy. BTW you do not say what report, if it is one of the Charts it may not save to rtf. My comments below refer to the Book Reports. Even the Standard Edition will Save a file as an rtf just check the radio button next to rtf and click the Create button, a screen will pop up with filename.rtf at the bottom; at the top browse to the folder where you wish to save it, then save. Now go to that file you have created ie. go to that folder and right click on the file, hover over Open with and you will see a selection of files, if Word is there then click it, if not select Choose Program at the bottom of the list and from the list select Word. You can also set this to open all rtf files. When you save files from Legacy you can opt to save them wherever you want, but Legacy - left to itself - will probably put them in its own Data folder. With my setup that is C:\Legacy\Data but you might have your Legacy program installed somewhere else. Secondly, what type of output did you select for your Report? If you selected Text (.txt) Legacy will ask if you want to view the vile in your default Text Editor, which is Notepad. If you chose RTF (.rtf) it will open the file in your default Word Processor. Re: [LegacyUG] Report output
Jane, you can check your path after entering by clicking the button Launch. I could hardly brag on myself to say that path names have ever been much of an issue for me, let alone a strong point. ;) Not every computer is set up the same. I have a fairly new XP machine from Dell and have not fiddled with any program locations. I say this only because if you have something similar my method may work for you. When I click Change next to the Alternate Word Processor field, it opens the Legacy data folder. I had to go up the hierarchy to my C drive, then down to the Program Files folder, locate the Microsoft Office Folder, and finally the Word icon, which I clicked. When I clicked on the Word icon, it filled in the path in that Alternate Word Processor field. I see now that there is another field called Alternate Text Editor. I have done nothing to that option. Re: [LegacyUG] Report output
Jane Sarles wrote I left the same path name in the second field. Is that OK? The second field is intended for your wordprocessor so having MS Works in there is fine. The third field is really intended for whatever program you wish to use for text (.txt) files, which would normally be Notepad. I'm not sure *why* you would want to open text files in a wordprocessor rather than a basic text editor, but I don't suppose there's any reason why you shouldn't seeing you do want to. So it should be fine to have MS Works in that third field. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

[LegacyUG] Report output for child of spouseless relationship
I hope I can explain this well enough...I have a situation where a person's relationships have been like this: marriage with a child, spouseless relationship with a child, marriage with no children, and another marriage with no children. This person is my brother. I believe I have everything entered correctly (with Unknown as the mother of the child born to the spouseless relationship, and with the box checked that says this couple did not marry). However, when I create my own ancestor report, when it lists the children of my parents, it lists me and each of my siblings with our spouses (no children listed at this point). But for my brother, before it even lists his first wife, it says, Keith had a child. Obviously, I want his child from the spouseless relationship to be in there. But why is it saying Keith had a child when it isn't even saying anything about all the other children. More importantly, the main thing I need to know is how NOT to get it to put that sentence in the report. To me, that implies that he had a child before any of the marriages (not the case), and that no one else in the list had children (also not the case) If I'm not being clear, please ask me specific questionsthis is not good the way it is, and I feel sure the software is doing exactly what I have somehow told it to do! Hi Barbara; It sounds like you may have his marriages/relationships out of order... On the family view, click on the first little icon on the bottom of his view (spouses) and make sure they are all in the right order. This is the order it will come out one the reports... Re: [LegacyUG] Report output for child of spouseless relationship
Unless there is a specific reason why the mother's name should remain hidden, I would be inclined to not use unknown. The fact that they did not marry is already recorded, but the child was born to a real mother who really is not unknown. If necessary, consider using a name easily discerned as fictitious, such as Jane Doe, or, Remain Anonymous.
