Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy events or Notes
Bill, Regarding the lost e-mails, the link to the archive at the bottom of every e-mail is quick and efficient. (For some reason, your message below did not get tagged with the usual list footer info.) Regarding OCR, it appears that you now have some new suggestions from the list for free standalone software. But are you really sure that the software that came with your scanner does not include an OCR option? For example, my Canon scanner came with a 'CanoScan Toolbox' program. It includes a button for transferring the scanned image to the included OCR software. Good luck. Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy events or Notes
to get scanned docs into Legacy I need Optical Reader software (which makes sense) I have an old scanner that includes OCR software. My scanner is so old that I got it free, and downloaded the software from the web, but it does a good job of turning graphics into text. I cannot figure any way to input the scanned document other than through that scanner, so the OCR software will not work without the scanner. When I tell the scanner to scan for text, it automatically interprets it. -- Carlct...@getgoin.net Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy events or Notes
Bill, Scan as a picture (jpg) and save wherever you want as a PICTURE in Legacy. They are readable - exactly like the original but can be blown up for details. And they can easily be printed. I do it all the time. Simplest solution I have found! Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy events or Notes
Simple OCR used to be free. I guess they changed that. I don't type out most of my historical documents. Very rarely. I can't even think of one. What I do is scan them, crop and straighten them and attach them as images into Legacy. Then I file the originals in my paper files. - JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www.jgen.ws/jlog Bill Rhodes wrote: I have somehow lost my original email and the replies to it, but I was told by someone that to get scanned docs into Legacy I need Optical Reader software (which makes sense) and that I could find free ones for download. In most cases, I see no need to have complete transcriptions of every document in my database. I usually summarize the key points, include significant quotes as necessary, and if I want to maintain the original document in my database, I attach a picture of it, as was discussed in the previous thread. If you feel you need a complete transcription of the document(s), rather than an attached image, you will need to purchase a good OCR program (I haven't seen such a thing, but perhaps one exists), or retype the documents. Personally, I'd opt for the latter if for some reason I didn't want to attach a scan (jpg, pdf format, etc.). Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to copy scanned documents into Legacy events or Notes
You can also scan a picture as an image and type it out using Transcript which splits the screen so you can see the image on top and type your text down below. I've done lots this way but only on relatively shorter pieces, like obits, where I want to put the text into Legacy. - JL JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://www.jgen.ws/jlog Dennis M. There is at least one free OCR package: GOCR It can be downloaded here: http://jocr.sourceforge.net/download.html (scroll down to the Windows-binary link for Windows) John I have somehow lost my original email and the replies to it, but I was told by someone that to get scanned docs into Legacy I need Optical Reader software (which makes sense) and that I could find free ones for download.
