Re: [LegacyUG] Use of Picture Center to rename picture files

2009-01-30 Thread Gary Crull
I've been watching this thread play out. Sure wish I'd have known about
this a few weeks ago.

I just finished two solid weeks of manually renaming 1,800 or so files to
get a consistent naming scheme for my photo gallery. An exhausting job to
say the least. THEN I had to go back into Legacy and reattach all the
renamed photos...another exhausting job.

Had I known the renaming could have been accomplished within Legacy via
this Picture Center and not have to reattach the photos I could have
saved myself literally several man days of work.

OH well, learn something every day I guess. Sometimes it's just too late.

families, etc. Be sure to also check out "Scrapbook."

When you rename a picture, do it in the Picture Center within Legacy
and you don't need to reattach it. If you rename outside of Legacy
(in Windows) you will have to reattach the picture.
A naming standard is very helpful in organizing your pictures. How do
you file your papers? I recommend using the same system for your
pictures. I use the MRIN system for all my filing, so I start each
picture name with that family's MRIN.
It doesn't matter where you store your pictures, but have a plan and
stick to it. I use multiple folders under Legacy/Pictures.
As I don't yet use the Publication Center or put things on the
Internet, I'll leave the other questions to someone else.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of Picture Center to rename picture files

2009-01-29 Thread JLB
I notice that you tend to ask very broad and open-ended questions. If
you have pictures linked from a variety of locations, somewhat unknown
even to yourself, it's impossible for anyone else to get into your
set-up and have a clue. If a picture is showing up in Legacy, it must
be linked from 'somewhere'. Go to Options/Customize/Locations/View
Current List of Multimedia Locations and see if any of that list is
recognizable to you. That shows where all the pictures are linked from
and might give you an idea where the particular 'grainy' one is coming from.

The other option is to print a list of all picture paths using
Scrapbook, scroll down the list until you come to the name of the
'grainy' one and then you'll know.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of Picture Center to rename picture files

2009-01-29 Thread Allison Nelson
I recently decided to set up website using TNG and Legacy together, so have
set up all my Legacy picture & document folders to match the ones in TNG's
default set up. I will be collecting info as usual, adding it to Legacy and
then periodically uploading entire Legacy file (as it grows) to TNG. Having
the folders named after the TNG defaults the same makes updating TNG really
easy and I know exactly where pics are for both programs cause both programs
are using the same folder.

Rename is a very large button in the right column between zoom and
delete underneath the thumbnail image. Renaming pictures here will save
you the bother of having to relink your images if you rename them
elsewhere, but this is not a very user-friendly feature as you have to
type the entire name. It doesn't help you out by inserting what you
