Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help

2007-02-16 Thread Dennis Davenport
Pat, how to record census records (and many other types of sources) has
been debated on many genealogy boards over the years. I'm trying to
make a decision myself as to whether I should make the source name
general so there are few source names, or make the source name include
details, which will result in multitudes of entries for censuses alone.
I'm trying to determine if there are any advantages to including some of
the location, year, or surname data in the source name. One advantage
might be that you don't have to refer back to the detail window to
determine the specific source, while viewing in Legacy. A person could
also compromise and maybe at least include the census year in the source
name, which would give you about 15 entries for the federal census,
which isn't bad. It really all comes down to personal preference and
how you display your data. I think I'm leaning toward more detail in my
source names.

Thank you, that would be great. I just don't know what
I am doing incorrectly, although I'm sure it must be
something that I'm not understanding properly.

My goal is to create an online dowloadable/printable
'book' for my family, but I am also having a very
difficult time figuring out exactly where to enter
information so that things show up where I want them.
I sure wish there were lots of examples and SPECIFIC
instructions somewhere for Legacy. I can follow
directions if none of them are omitted. Everything I
have looked at in help files has been of little help
because it seems to assume that I already know a lot.
I've tried all sorts of things and my files are a
jumbled mess.

My phone number is 717-939-2464 and you can reach me
any weekday between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.

Thanks again,
Elizabeth

Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help

2007-02-16 Thread Jim Terry
Pat,

I try to keep one master source for each of the U.S. censuses, which I can get
online at Ancestry.com. This keeps the number of censuses entries in my Master
Source List to a minimum. Here is an example:

Source List Name:
  1900 U.S. Census (Online)
Master Source Definition:
Ancestry.com, 1900 United States Federal Census [database and images
on-line]. (Provo, UT, USA: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2006. Original data: United
States of America, Bureau of the Census. Twelfth Census of the United States,
1900. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1900)
Source Detail:
Henry Meyer household, State of Indiana, Fulton County, Liberty Twp.,
Emumeration District [ED] 37, Sheet 6B, Family 146. National Archives Microfilm
T623 Roll 372.
Even though the census was obtained at Ancestry.com, there is enough
information in my source detail to find it at the National Archives. I save
the images of the online censuses, which I also print out and put with the hard
copies in my research folders. (Each print out also has all of the source
information recorded on it.)

Pat,

Re: Census - Master Source(s)

If you look in the LUG archives (see Legacy Messages below) you will find
many, many references to ways of recording these. Which more or less break
down into 2 camps; those, like me, who have only one source censuses and
those who break them down into local areas/offices/individuals/year/etc.

I cannot speak for census other than the UK but I have no problem with using
the one master source called census with the year in the details and any
comments in the notes. Others disagree but for me 'each to their own'!
