Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help
Pat, how to record census records (and many other types of sources) has been debated on many genealogy boards over the years. I'm trying to make a decision myself as to whether I should make the source name general so there are few source names, or make the source name include details, which will result in multitudes of entries for censuses alone. I'm trying to determine if there are any advantages to including some of the location, year, or surname data in the source name. One advantage might be that you don't have to refer back to the detail window to determine the specific source, while viewing in Legacy. A person could also compromise and maybe at least include the census year in the source name, which would give you about 15 entries for the federal census, which isn't bad. It really all comes down to personal preference and how you display your data. I think I'm leaning toward more detail in my source names. Dennis Pat Jones wrote: Elizabeth, I feel just like you do. I've brought a big datatbase into Legacy from another program and while it appeared to come over without too many glitches, I'm now finding strange couplings of sources and people who have absolutely no reason to have had that source coupled with them. Also, trying to figure out how to insert sources and events and all their associated windows have about driven me to the wall. The book has definintely NOT been of use but I did find the first set of CDs (borrowed from a friend) cleared up some of the problems with how to insert information into Sources and Events. I finally managed to get one Census looking the way that I wanted it and made my own cheat sheet so that I could redo all of the Census information the same way now and in the future. I'm still playing with the way I've entered them. Tonight I'd like to see what happens if I enter only the words US Federal Census for the Master Source List Name, then define which one it is in some other window, wondering if that would cut down on the number of entries in the Master Source List without causing problems elsewhere. Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help
Pat, I try to keep one master source for each of the U.S. censuses, which I can get online at Ancestry.com. This keeps the number of censuses entries in my Master Source List to a minimum. Here is an example: Source List Name: 1900 U.S. Census (Online) Master Source Definition: Ancestry.com, 1900 United States Federal Census [database and images on-line]. (Provo, UT, USA: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2006. Original data: United States of America, Bureau of the Census. Twelfth Census of the United States, 1900. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1900) Source Detail: Henry Meyer household, State of Indiana, Fulton County, Liberty Twp., Emumeration District [ED] 37, Sheet 6B, Family 146. National Archives Microfilm T623 Roll 372. Even though the census was obtained at Ancestry.com, there is enough information in my source detail to find it at the National Archives. I save the images of the online censuses, which I also print out and put with the hard copies in my research folders. (Each print out also has all of the source information recorded on it.) Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help
Pat, Re: Census - Master Source(s) If you look in the LUG archives (see Legacy Messages below) you will find many, many references to ways of recording these. Which more or less break down into 2 camps; those, like me, who have only one source censuses and those who break them down into local areas/offices/individuals/year/etc. I cannot speak for census other than the UK but I have no problem with using the one master source called census with the year in the details and any comments in the notes. Others disagree but for me 'each to their own'!
