RE: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... Root Folder?
Colin, With respect, whilst I agree with your comments on Norton, reformatting your drive is not the only way to go. I got rid of all the left behinds by going into the Register and deleting everything related to the program. I do not recommend doing this if you do not know what you are doing and creating a Restore Point first is essential. Ron, This is my last word on this as no doubt there will be a complaint about it being off topic. If you look at the third paragraph in my e-mail you will note I mention stripping the Registry of Nortons. The problem is that you never get it all, they seem to have the ability to insert files that cannot be removed or are named in such a way as to have no connection to Nortons. I can find my way around the Registry without any problem and am experienced in removing programs in this manner I am not the only one that has come up against this problem, I have been in touch with others on forums with the same problem and they all concurred that a format was the only way to get rid of all Nortons files in the registry. Re: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... Root Folder?
John, First my apologies to the list for a non Legacy topic but I think this may have something to do with the problem. I have no wish to start a discussion on which is the best anti virus program but from my observations I have found Nortons cause more problems than they fix and if it was my computer I would remove Nortons and use another program to see if the problem is fixed. The one difficulty I have found is that Nortons is difficult to remove and even after stripping the registry there is still stuff left behind and formatting the hard drive and re-installing evrything again is the only way it can be done. My two cents worth. Colin. - Original Message - From: John Roose To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 10:51 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... Root Folder? Re: [LegacyUG] Error 508 ... Root Folder?
Colin - I have to tell you that your experience is not unique. I work on and with a number of computers and have for a number of years in some highly delicate settings. The first thing we have done is strip them of Norton. Norton was a wonderful program when it was first released many years back but since then it has steadily built up a history of conflicting with major programs. Had the same problem 3 years ago, except it finally crashed my C: drive. Had to reformat and reinstall Windows and all programs. Glad I had backups.
