I looked under Add-ons at the Legacy web site, but did not see it
listed. Just wondered what the pricing was. Saw Family Atlas on sale
in Eastman's newsletter this week for $20.

Thanks,

Map My Family Tree does not show historical boundaries at the present time.

We are aware of the interest in historical maps, since most of a
person's family history happened in the past. This enhancement is on our list.

Map My Family Tree ver. 1.3 offers filters which enable you to choose
what appears on your map. You can select any combination of:

Individuals
Names
Gender
Ancestors
Descendants
Date range
Type of event
MMFT provides a variety of colorful placemarkers. You can also use
your own images as placemarkers. These same placemarkers will also appear
on the Google Earth map (not the generic Google placemarkers).
Map My Family Tree 1.3 can be downloaded as a free upgrade.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Atlas Genealogy Mapping

2006-11-30 Thread Gail Rich Nestor

Hi Pierre, I realized the mistake in my assertion when I examined the
Progeny tabs a little more carefully. Thanks for clearing this up.
Now I see that Progeny offers Map My Family Tree as a product
compatible with other genealogy database software, but it not actually
selling Family Tree Maker or Legacy.

Anyway, I read the details and the screen views for the Map My Family
Tree software and I think it sounds like a good product. I like the
fact that you can code historical place names so the database will
recognize them by their modern day location. I also really like the
fact that you can include/exclude people, places, events, etc. to
customize the map. That definitely beats out the competition.

Here's a question - When the map drills down to more detail in the US
(where 98% of my family research is based at present), does it only
provide current county lines within a state, or does it have the
ability to convert boundaries as you scroll back through time? This
would be neat! To see an example of this feature in action for the
state of Georgia, see
http://www.mygeorgiagenealogy.com/ga_maps/ga_cf.htm.

After reading a bit more about both programs, I think I am going to
try this software out! I appreciate your direct response to this list
and will write a review of its strongsuits for the LUG readers once I
have explored it a bit more. I find this kind of research technology
very fascinating.

Thanks again for your clarification.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Atlas Genealogy Mapping

2006-11-29 Thread Gail Rich Nestor

Thanks to everyone for your input on Family Atlas. I'm glad that it
works with Legacy's gedcoms. I figured I would have to create custom
gedcom files to hone in on exactly what I wanted to see and not have
the map cluttered with non-related lines. It would be nice if the
programmers could work it out to allow the user to choose the
ancestors/events/locations more easily. Also, I take it that the
program would not recognize old US division or district numbers that
were found on the old census listings (i.e. Division 27, Decatur
County, Georgia, USA)? I don't want to do a bunch of editing in
Legacy just to make the map work.

I found this article on Dick Eastman's BLOG which lists a few features
and sort of compares it to Map my Family Tree:
http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/10/family_atlas_ge.html#more.
(Make sure you copy this entire link for it to work.) This product
costs $29.95. Reviews seemed to be more favorable for this product
than the one below. I get the impression it works best with US
locations.

In addition, Dick also did a review of Map my Family Tree here:
http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/map_my_family_t.html
This product costs $39.95. Dick seemed to like it!

It still sound like these products could both use a little more
tweaking, but I'm very interested in them still.

created a gedcom of direct ancestors exporting only birth, death and

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Family Atlas Genealogy Mapping

Hi Geoff, so does that mean Legacy supports *Map my Family Tree* by Progeny
over *Family Atlas* by RootsMagic? It looks like both companies also sell
products that rival Legacy. Geoff, have you already tried out Map my Family
tree? If so, do you like it? Do you feel there is good support and that
the product will grow to incorporate user suggestions like Legacy does?

Thanks for your comments on this. I'm still investigating... Gail Rich

I found this article on Dick Eastman's BLOG which lists a few features
and sort of compares it to Map my Family Tree:
 http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/10/family_atlas_ge
 .html#
 more.
(Make sure you copy this entire link for it to work.) This product costs
$29.95. Reviews seemed to be more favorable for this product than the one
below. I get the impression it works best with US locations.

In addition, Dick also did a review of Map my Family Tree here:
 http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/map_my_family_t
 .html
This product costs $39.95. Dick seemed to like it!

It still sound like these products could both use a little more
tweaking, but I'm very interested in them still.

Thanks for all the input and if I learn more, I'll post it here.

  Gail,

I have Family Atlas. Generally, it is a good tool and very useful.
It imports a Legacy database directly but if you have a large
database, it will result in a very cluttered map. The good news is
you can zoom in very closely and get more detail. The biggest con
I've found is that regardless of which facts or events you have
chosen for it ot plot, it will plot everything. To make it useful,
I created a gedcom of direct ancestors exporting only birth, death
and marriage facts. That worked very well. You can also pick
subject people (ancestors, for example) in Family Atlas but when you
plot, there will be a LOT of unwanted facts also plotted. This
behavior has been reported to the developer. Overall, if you think
through your project, it is an effective tool.

I realize this is straying from the path of Legacy. I am hopeful

2006-11-26 Thread Bill Daniels

To Everyone:

I just recieved my copy of Family Altas created by Bruce Buzbee.

The installation to my computer was a breeze. I have a six year old
computer with a 1G hard drive. I am using Legacy 6.0.0.110 version
The importing of Legacy data was just as easy. I used their import
wizard. After the importing of data ( your locations from Legacy)
Family Atlas allows you to choice any differences in location. Such as
Scott, Allen county, Indiana or

Scott, Clackuas county, Oregon

The program will pick any differences in location. Out of 900
locations there was about 100-125 different places that I needed to
decide on which one was the correct location It took about 10 minutes
total. ( I 'm 98 percent US based researched. )

I allowed myself to take the tutorial, before I began to experiment with
the program. The program is very easy to use. I have not used all the
features to the programs as yet, but the selection of family group is a
breeze and seeing the entire family throughout the map is a blast!!
Family Atlas data base for location (s) is quite extensive it even has
several names that Animap does not have.

I like the feature of being able to see and measure the distances
between two cities between two or a third states. ( I have many
ancestors living on the borders of different states.

My overall impression of the program is 5 star. I'm' not a computer
geek. The different computer program I use are simple and easy to use.
I learn the program thoroughly so I can use the program effectively...

Bill,

Do the maps also show features such as rivers and cemeteries?
