RE: [LegacyUG] Pictures - loading problem

Mary,

The first thing I would do is run check/repair on the database. See if that
takes care of the problem.

Help!

I have used Legacy for years, and Legacy 7 for months. All of a
sudden, all photos which I store in c:\Legacy\Pictures are not loading
quickly and neatly on individuals. Instead, when I click on the Show
Picture Gallary for an individual, the picutures come up but the hour
glass runs and runs and it starts to flicker and up at the top, left,
it keeps saying, off and on,

I have the database in c:\Legacy\Data and the pictures in
c:\Legacy\Pictures.

Any ideas?

Mary

I have done a check/repair and that did not stop the problem. Then I
reloaded the Legacy 7 program from the internet. It is still not
working correctly. I have 2,413 pictures in the c:\Legacy\Pictures
file. Is there a limit to size of picture file for the program to
handle it correctly?

And the second thing(s) I would do is to ensure that the PC is nice and clean
ie. run Spybot, AdAware, CClean, empty the browser cache, defrag, etc. etc.

John,

I just checked and have .jpg and .bmp and 4 .pdf files but no .tiff. I
checked the folders of other persons in the database and mostly they
are not flickering and are loading ok. Samuel Richmond and 21 pictures
attached. I went into Picture Center and removed several so there are
12 for him now, all .jpg. His pictures are loading very slowly and
flickering.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pictures - loading problem

2008-11-24 Thread Sherry/Support
I've found that if you have a lot of pictures with large files sizes linked
to a picture gallery, then it will be very slow and flicker. I have one
person with quite a few pictures of 2-3 MB attached in his Picture Gallery
and it's a lot slower loading than in the other Picture Galleries with
smaller pictures.

I've always said that file sizes should be no larger than 150-200 KB in
size. However, Geoff reminded me that files that small wouldn't work well on
wall charts created in Legacy Charting.

So my compromise suggestion would be have the preferred picture which you
would expect to use on the wall charts be high resolution. Make all the
rest smaller - the smaller size/lower resolution works fine in books and web
pages.

And since sound, video and document files such as PDF aren't redrawing
thumbnails, then those shouldn't affect the speed of the Picture Gallery
loading.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures - loading problem

2008-11-26 Thread Mary E. V. Hill
Sherry,

Your comments are most appreciated! I have been using the Legacy Picture
Gallery to store all digital images for a person - census records,
photographs, land records, images from newspapers, wills - the list goes on
and on.

I think I will limit my images attached to a person - which makes me kind of
sad. But your suggestion of saving images at a lower resolution is a
possibility.

I also realized that once again I had stored about 20 folders full of images
on my Desktop - a bad habit. It really slows down the loading process and
uses up my available RAM. So I spent hours today cleaning off my Desktop and
storing items in Documents rather than on the Desktop. My son
also encouraged me to edit the programs that are loading automatically in my
Action Bar in the lower right of my screen. That can slow loading down.

Thank you all, very much, for the help offered!
