RE: [LegacyUG] Book published online advice and Legacy 7 template query

2007-09-04 Thread Christine Pearce
Thank you, Alice, for your response about the correct URL to include in the
source. Sometimes it can be so easy to over-complicate things! Your answer
has helped to separate the forest from the trees!

I'm still wondering if anyone knows if Legacy 7's new templates will help
with "where did you find this information". Does anyone know?

Christine

Chris, I find citing sources to be greatly simplified if I simply include
everything needed to find my exact source for the information as well as the

original source. In this case your source for the correct citation
information would be here:
http://fulltext10.fcla.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=fhp;idno=WF0020;sid=ebc
af7274eaab2b014abd100fb171216;rgn=full%20text;view=toc;cc=fhp;subview=fullci
tation;node=WF0020%3A1;a=37
A citation always answers the question: Where can I find this information?
Your information was not found at AmericanSouth. It was located elsewhere.
When it comes to on-line books that are digitized versions of print boks
it's very important to inlcude the publication information for the original
print book also.

Hi all. I found a digitised version of a book on the internet and am
confused about recording the details for a new Master Source.

The web site is AmericanSouth.Org <http://www.americansouth.org/index.php>

After performing a search, it takes you to another page which says:

Title: Reminiscences [electronic resource] / by Emory Fiske Skinner.
Archive: Florida Center for Library Automation - Florida Heritage
   Collection
   URL: http://purl.fcla.edu/fcla/dl/WF0020.pdf

"Electronic reproduction. [Florida] : State University System of
Florida, PALMM Project, 2000. (Florida heritage collection)"

The actual document is at
<http://fulltext10.fcla.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=fhp&idno=WF0020&format
=pdf>

At the Progenealogists.com they say you enter a citation for a book that's
published online like this:

Book author, book title, page number cited (Online: Online publisher,
online published date) [Original published original publisher name,
original publish date], , web page access date.

In this particular case, who would I enter as the online publisher and whose
URL would I add? AmericanSouth.Org, Florida Center for Library Automation -
Florida Heritage Collection, or Florida - State University System of
Florida? Or would you quote all of the above organisations and all the URLs?

Is the Type, Electronic (like they say in the Title), or a Book?

Is the Repository what they give as the archive (Florida Center for Library
Automation), or AmericanSouth.Org?

Does it make a difference in the way you enter the author whether the pages
are the actual pages or a transcription?, i.e. Author: Emory Fiske Skinner,
transcribed by .

I hope these questions aren't too stupid. Any advice would be appreciated!

Finally, does anyone know if the new Legacy v7 source templates will include
fields for entering WHERE you actually find source data?

Cheers,
Christine

RE: [LegacyUG] Book published online advice and Legacy 7 template query

2007-09-03 Thread Christine Pearce
Thank you Bill Daniels. Unfortunately, I don't have either of the books you
mentioned and won't be in a position to get one for a few months. I was
hoping someone could help in the meantime. I've been researching sources on
the internet, but the questions I posed have me stumped as the examples I've
found haven't mentioned multiple web sites/links, etc.

Any assistance out there will be appreciated.

Christine

2007-09-02 Thread Bill Daniels

To the many Legacy uses:

A lot of you have waited for Elizabeth Mills "Evidence Explained" book.
There are other books out there that are as good or even better. Please
do not take me wrong Elizabeth Mills books are great I have two of hers.
And I have ordered her latest book. I have not received it yet.

The one book I refer to has templates that will handle 99% of any
source material you would find the the realm of family history is a 116
page notebook called "Family History Documentation Guideline" Second
edition. It is put out by the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group.
Their web site is; http://www.svpafug.org

The price of the book $13.50. This has been one of the best hided
secrets of genealogy that I have discovered.

To Christine Pearce you will find --You will find how to source your
book on page 53 Its under title: Book compiles from other sources.
Its in Chapter Four Source Entry Examples.
