Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy V6 & V7 handling of TIFF pictures

2008-10-05 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
Thanks to all who replied regarding my problem. I suspect it may be a
compression issue as most of you have suggested. I see same problem on 2
computers. a desktop with XP and a laptop with vista. Neither has a working
photo editor now. The desktop had problems and had to be restored to
original so haven't yet reinstalled some programs and laptop is so new I
haven't got around to it yet. I'll check it tomorrow with my wife's
computer.

The problem TIF file shows creation a year ago. I know I scanned it over 7
yearrs ago but I recall seeing some huge Legacy source files a while back
and reduced file size using compression and resizing so probably lost
ability to view in Legacy at that time.

I'll let you all know soon if this is indeed the case.

Thank you all.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy V6 & V7 handling of TIFF pictures

2008-10-04 Thread Terri Brown
Richard,

This is (probably) a compression issue. I've had the same problem. I usually
use Microsoft Picture It aka Digital Image Pro to save/convert images to TIF.
Even though I have compression turned OFF this program still saves TIF images
with LZW compression. I found if I use another program to save my images as
TIFs I no longer have this issue. In my case I use an older version of Corel
Photo House. I discovered the compression issue one day after viewing an
image's properties in Microsoft Office Document Imaging. You may have to save
your TIF images in another format such as JPG or BMP then resave to TIF but
simply resaving in a different imaging program may do the trick.

If the problem images are ones you scanned personally, double check your
scanner's settings. I discovered my scanner software had the compression turned
ON by default. Now I check that before each scanning session to be sure it
doesn't revert back.

It took me quite a while to figure this out and to determine which program was
the culprit. I was real close to sending the images to Legacy's support team
for inspection before I discovered Microsoft Office Document Imaging displayed
compression information in the Properties dialogue box.

Hope this helps.

Terri

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy V6 & V7 handling of TIFF pictures

Every now and then I have attached a TIFF file as a personal photo or for a
source document while running V6. I would attach it as a picture (not using
Video or Sound icon) and egacy V6 would display a thumbnail and be able to open
directly from Legacy.

Now, many months after moving to Legacy V7 I notice a TIFF file does not open,
it seems to be missing. I can attach it as a Document OK but if I try to attach
it as a Picture it doesn't work.

If anyone is running both V6 & V7 and could confirm that they handle IFF files
differently  would appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy V6 & V7 handling of TIFF pictures

2008-10-04 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I am not sure what the problem is. I use only L7, and I have over 500 .tif
files as photos, which display properly. I have tried to add one of my 'tiffs'
using FILE, to a person, and the 'icon' type drawing of a stack of papers
showed up. When I clicked on the icon, it brought up the photo. I then added a
normal WORD document to the 'file'. When I click on the 'papers' it opens up
Word to find the file, but does not show it there (in the photo gallery).
Is this what is happening to you? Is your tiff file save as *.tif or *.tiff?
Just because you saved it as a *.tif file doesn't mean that the computer agrees
with your naming it as such.

If my guesses are wrong, lets get on the 'same page'.

Open the picture (one that doesn't show) in a photo editor and pretend
you're going to resave it. A box for compression options will show.
Make sure it says 'None'. If it doesn't, resave it with no
compression. Would be interested to know if that's the issue.

Using 6 or 7, I can attach TIFF files. Extension doesn't seem to make a
difference. Can use TIFF or TIF! Suggest that there may be some kind of
compression problem.

I have just put a /tif photo into my family file, both as an
individual's picture and as a source picture and Legacy had no problems
with it.
