You mentioned database program.. rang a bell. I have Microsoft Office

mdb. (using a copy -- not my main file) It works !!

It's not really important, but as it happens there is no need to change
the extension. Just select All files (*.*) in the Files of Type field
when you want to open your Legacy file and it will happily open the .fdb
file.

The advantage of changing the extension is that it does remind you that
you need to be working on a copy of you family file ... just in case!

Lew,

If I understand you correctly then, yes, the Master Sources are each unique. If
you have Access or OpenOffice the you will find the Source Details in tblSX.

If I have several events all referenced to the same source, how can I
tell whether there is actually multiple copies of the source in the
database, or one copy that is linked to all the events. Am I correct
in assuming that there is only one copy of the source itself but each
citation is a stand alone regardless of whether or not it is
duplicated? Is there any way that I can view that in the database
 itself?
 Thanks for listening...

Thanks, Ron. I don't have Access or Open Office, but I have MS Word
and Excel. Not sure I understand how to access Legacy in either one.

RE: [LegacyUG] Sources and Citations

2009-03-18 Thread ronald ferguson

Sorry, Lew, but you can't.

The Legacy database is an Access file ie. a '.mbd' file, although Legacy names
it as '.fdb', hence can only be opened in some database programs, such as the
two I mentioned, but not in a wordprocessor nor a spreadsheet progam.

Thanks again, Ron. You mentioned database program.. rang a bell. I
have Microsoft Office which does have Access. I changed the extension
on my Legacy file to mdb. (using a copy -- not my main file) It works
!! I found the citation details in tbl1SX like you said and yes, they
are repeated. I played around a bit and found the sources in tblSR.
It looks like the sources are not repeated, but the citations are.
That seems to answer my question... Sources are linked, but citations
are repeated for each event.
Thanks again...
