Once you have the list, tag the list. Then from Name List (Upper left icon),
Search (bottom, next to Options), show all tagged . . . (your tag number)

Select the tab that says Notes, and step down to see them all. To untag
those you are finished with, double click on the X by their name.

I have just finished a program that reads the Legacy database and reports on
the status of the census events for the individuals in the file. You have
to specify which year(s) you want to check and if a person was alive during
the year(s), it will produce a report showing if a census event exists. It
has shown me all of my missing entries...I have a lot of work to fill hem
in. It will be a nice tool for when the 1940 US census becomes available to
know who you have to look for. If anyone is interested in it, let me know
and I would be willing to share it.

[LegacyUG] Christmas Wishes

2009-12-24 Thread leo macdonald

I'm sorry about the last two posts, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I copied
and paste a poem, maybe that is where I went wrong. I hope that by typing the
whole letter it will work better.

I found this wonderful poem a while back and thought I'd share it with everyone
on this list. This may be a bit off "Legacy Topic", but I wanted to wish
everyone a "Merry Christmas" and a joyous holiday season.

Leo

Genealogist's Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;
Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat."

Stacks of old copies of wills and such
Were proof that my work had become too much.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.

And I at my table was ready to drop
>From work on my album with photos to crop.
Christmas was here, and such was my lot
That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot.

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others brought gifts to bring christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

While I was thus musing about my sad plight,
A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright.
Away to the window I flew in a flash,
Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash.

When what with my wondering eyes should appear,
But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.
Up to the house top the reindeer they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too.

And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs.
As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash,
Down the cold chimney fell Santa--ker-rash!

"Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck,
And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!)
Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see
I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk).
Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy:
When I'd been too busy for even one toy.

He spied my research on the table all spread
"A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!)
"Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned,
As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned.

I gazed with amusement--the cover it read
Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead.
"I know what it's like as a genealogy bug."
He said as he gave me a great Santa hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry,
I do some research in the North Pole Library!
A special treat I am thus able to bring,
To genealogy folk who can't find a thing."

"Now off you go to your bed for a rest,
I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess."
As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee,
I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me.

While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle,
To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"Family history is fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"

Some email programs will break the link because it exceeds their

how you do it.

First, highlight the first line of the link, copy it, and paste it

Next highlight the second line of the URL, copy it and paste it at the
end of the first one in your browser address bar. Make sure there is
no space between the two addresses.

So, where your first line ends in 155f, the full URL would appear as"
http://mail.legacyusers.com...155f62641&ml=3&domain=LegacyUsers.com

(The ... indicates what is already there but I can't duplicate it here
since the line would again be too long.)

Now hit the enter key and you should get to the correct page.

Hope this helps.

I think the OP was trying to make a distinction between the quality of the two
sources. One being a transcription(?) of the other, or something similar. A
Primary source is usually the original document, whilst a Secondary source is
one derived from a Primary source.

[LegacyUG]

2009-12-24 Thread leo macdonald

I found this wonderful poem a while back and thought I'd share it with everyone
on the list, this is a bit off Legacy topic, but I wanted to send my wishes to
everyone for a merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season.
Leo

Genealogist's Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

Goodnight!"

I agree with Dennis--just merge both of them unless there is a chance you will
need the primary source later on. Make sure you back up before you merge
especially if it has source images attached.

Dennis,

This would be Martha's best bet if she is using the Basic Source System, or if
she can use the same template in Sourcewriter, but I'm not sure it will work
if, say, the derivative source she wishes to replace was written with one
Sourcewriter template (e.g. book) and she needs to use a new template (e.g.
court records>loose papers) for the original record. While it may be possible
to "tweak" the current template, it may not produce the best results depending
upon the specific template and how close she wants the result to be to an
EE-style format.

Or am I missing something in my thinking? (I don't have time to experiment
today to find out for myself).

Why not just edit the secondary Master Source and change it to the

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing sources

2009-12-24 Thread mjmethod
Not that I am aware of.

First, I would not delete the secondary source. It is still a legitimate
part of your research and documentation. Instead, simply add the new one.
(You can prevent the secondary source from printing in reports if that is
your preference.)

My suggestion:
1. Using the Master Source, create your new source.
2. locate your secondary source in the Master Source list
on the right side, click "show list", at the bottom choose a Tag # to
use, "Untag everyone in File" (bottom right), then "Tag everyone in list"
(bottom left), then "Create Search List" and "Create New Search List"
3. Close Master Source List
4. Click "Search" and "View Search List"
5. for the first record you want to work with, click "Source" tab, go to
the appropriate Event, and click "Cite" then apply your new Source. Save.
Click the "clipboard" (bottom right) to copy the source.
6. go to the next record, select the appropriate Event, click the "paste"
icon (upper left, looks like a dash [--]), edit the Source Detail if
necessary, then save.
7. repeat
If you've got a long list, you may want to double-click the 'X' in the
tag column to clear it so you know which ones you have already done.

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Based recording

2009-12-24 Thread Sherry/Support
The discussion, I'm sure, was amongst the listers in the form of a request.
The programmers make it a policy to not announce features they're working on.

Legacy has an Event Clipboard. Create the event and in the event window, click
on the “copy” button. Go to the next person, open a New event and then click on
Paste.

Full details are in the Help file under Event: Clipboard.

Thanks for using Legacy.

There had been talk a few versions ago about Legacy getting the capability of
creating an EVENT then attaching folks that “belong” to that event. I feel this
would be much better than having to create a specific CENSUS event for each
person/marriage found in a family’s entry on the census.

Is this still in the works?

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting in Legacy

2009-12-24 Thread Sherry/Support
Not at this time. It's something the programmers hope to add for a future
release.

You can create a Name List report, which will show everyone in the file, just
not in a tree format. Click on Name List icon and then in that window, click
on Print. The report will sort in the order that the Name List is sorted in.
In the Deluxe Edition, you can include up to 30 fields of information.

For further help with the Name List report, click on the context-sensitive
"Help" button while in that window.

Thanks for using Legacy.

weather to buy or not. It fills most of my needs however I do want to
publish a chart containing everyone not must my blood line. I know I

[LegacyUG] Changing sources

2009-12-24 Thread Martha Clatterbuck
I have a question for you power users - is there a way to globally change
sources? For example, I have a transcription of a will that I have sourced from
its secondary source, then I go to the courthouse and verify it, and want to
change every reference of that secondary source to the primary courthouse
document.

The only way I know how to do this is to create a search list for the secondary
source, and for each entry, delete the old source and re-enter the new one.

Is there an easier way?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Martha in Virginia
