[LegacyUG] Previously filled in data shows up blank

2010-02-19 Thread Sharon
Sometimes, if I have left my Legacy database open overnight and come back in
the morning, I will click on an individual's card to edit it and all of the
fields will be blank. Other times I will be able to see the card but when I
click on a filled-out "event" to edit it, all of the previously entered data
comes up blank. If I close out of Legacy and reopen it, the type is a
fraction of the size it was before I closed it out, but the data that showed
up blank does appear. What is happening?

Thanks,
Sharon

RE: [LegacyUG] Pop up boxes squished

Good question – and that’s why troubleshooting can be difficult for some issues!

Not everyone uses the pop-up boxes (I find them annoying) so they’re not seeing
the problem.

Unless I missed something somewhere, how come this "squished boxes"
only affects some people and not others ? Is it the individual operating system
?I am running Windows 2000 Pro and am not having any problems. Am using Legacy

Re: [LegacyUG] Is it just me, or is data entry in Legacy screw wacky

2010-02-19 Thread Brian/Support
That is not totally true. The vital events, birth, Chr, death and burial
event pictures are available and will print in the Family Group Sheet
and the Individual reports. These reports have separate areas for each
of the vital events and the pictures are placed beside each event in
those reports.

The difficulty with trying to include vital event pictures in the
narrative reports is that the vital events are not listed separately.
They are in a summary paragraph about the person. The programmer has
said in our test mailing list that he is considering how to add the
vital event pictures to the narrative reports but has not found a
solution. Such questions as where to place them, after the life
paragraph or beside it; and how to handle the variables for picture
size, orientation etc. are just some of the problems with including
vital event pictures in the narrative reports.

I found a post that referred to Geoff's comments I was trying to find. It was
in a post by Gail Rich Nestor on 17 Sep 2008 to the "old"

talking about. Pity it didn't happen.

[LegacyUG] Microsoft Jet Database Engine stopped

2010-02-19 Thread Gary A Crull
When trying to open my Legacy database on my desktop computer I get the
following error message...

"Microsoft Jet Database Engine stopped the process because you and
another user are attempting to change the same database at the same
time"

I'm the only one using it! Had no problem until today. Checked the
archives for MICROSOFT JET DATABASE ENGINE" and came up empty! How do I
get this problem corrected? I have not made any changes recently and have
a duplicate backup copy on my laptop which opens fine.

I use DROPBOX to sync the files, but the laptop hasn't had an internet
connection to be synced recently (thank heavens!).

Thanks for the help.

Dropbox is the likely culprit. I use it also, but choose to turn it off
when I'm working with Legacy. It can take a long time to upload the
Legacy file(s), and while doing so you won't have access to the file.
Let it upload and then close it and you should be able to use the file
again.

Well, DropBox could have been examining the file to see if it had
changed. That's one possibility.

Solution: Windows has got its' knickers in a knot. Shut the machine down
(it's the green thing to do over night anyway) and re-boot.

Shutdown Legacy. Then look for lock file ... it will be the same name as
your family file with a .ldb extension. Delete it. Now try starting up
Legacy.

A lock file may have been left over after Legacy abended.

[LegacyUG] Relationship

2010-02-19 Thread Colin Liddell
Just noticed an odd thing regarding the relationship indication above a persons
name in Legacy. On one branch it goes to my gg grandfather but above my gg
grandmother there is nothing.
When I click on my ggg grandfather's name and bring it up, there is no
relationship (to me) above his name or his wife.
Does this happen to anyone else on the List and any suggestions.
I hope I am getting across what I trying to say, I can't think of any other way
to describe what is happening.
Apologies if I have not explained this very clearly.

I think this happens quite often - after adding people. The relationship
of newly people isn't automatically calculated. You'll have to
re-calculate relationships. Select yourself, and then select Tools-->

Re: [LegacyUG] Microsoft Jet Database Engine stopped

2010-02-19 Thread Gary A Crull
Thanks for all the suggestions from those who responded. Not that I guess
it matters, but I neglected to mention I'm using Legacy 7.4 on Windows 7
Home Premium desktop and Vista Home Premium on the laptop.

DROPBOX says all files up-to-date.

I've done both a RESTART as well as a SHUT DOWN to no avail.

I've not found any .ldb files anywhere.

I don't have the opportunity to close/exit Legacy as the message comes up
immediately and I only have the options of TRY AGAIN, NO or QUIT. NO or
QUIT exits Legacy immediately.

I tried copying the Legacy files from the laptop to a thumbdrive and
attempted to open the file from the thumbdrive by clicking the "main"
Legacy icon and the file opens! So, obviously Legacy itself is working
correctly. It seems that the file(s) stored in DROPBOX got corrupted in
some manner. Since I've not made any changes to my database I have
redundant backups on the laptop, an external HD and not in any particular
panic about loosing my file altogether. Just want to be able to get a
GOOD version safely back into DROPBOX.

Before doing it, and making a bad situation worse, what's the consensus
of opinion on this plan? Deleting all the Legacy files in the DROPBOX
area; then opening the file from the thumbdrive. From there do a SAVE
FAMILY FILE AS the name I'd been using in DROPBOX. This, hopefully, would
restore a 'good' copy to DROPBOX.

Right click on the dropbox icon in the notification tray and choose
Preferences. In the General tab, uncheck Start dropbox on system
startup. Click OK.
Right click on the dropbox icon in the notification area again and
choose exit.

See if you can now use the file. If not, then we can proceed with other
alternatives.

[LegacyUG] Wrong Family

2010-02-19 Thread Georgia
I have been away from the list for a long time so please forgive me if I
am off kilter for a while.

My question is part general genealogy but also part Legacy.

My husband's grandmother immigrated to Hawaii on false papers. I had
already entered all the information contained in the huge NARA
immigration file which I now find is erroneous. A recently uncovered
interview with one of her daughters reveals her true name, her father's
true name and the existence of siblings (but no names). So my question
is, in Legacy, what do I do with the people (siblings and parents) who
were attached to her but which I now know are not her relatives (or
possibly quite distant relatives)? I have never had to unlink someone
and I'm somewhat nervous. Where do the unlinked ones go? Can I just
delete them and give her new parents?

Many thanks,

Georgia Chun

If you have a backup of your database then you don't need to worry. If
you break something you restore from the backup.

Re: [LegacyUG] subscribing

2010-02-19 Thread Gary Templeman
Yes, you are were doing something wrong. Your error is that due to the link
wrapping, it got broken. You need to manually paste in the part that reads
"80c8a&ml=3&domain=LegacyUsers.com" (without the parenthisis). When you just
click on the link you are getting only the first part of the URL (that ends
in e02fcd).

On the other hand, since this message got posted, your subscription appears
to be active so something must have gone through OK.

[LegacyUG] Sourcing FreeBMD and the IGI

2010-02-19 Thread Tony Rolfe
I was hoping someone might be able to advise on the best way to record
data obtained from FreeBMD and from the IGI.

At the moment, when I get BMD info from FreeBMD, I create an event
"Birth Registration", "Marriage Resistration" or "Death Registration"
with the volume and page numbers in the description, the quarter in the
date and the registration district in the location. I then have a
single "FreeBMD" source with no detail info, except the date that I
recorded the information. I was wondering whether this is the best way,
or whether there is a more accepted solution.

When I get information from the IGI, the process creates at least one
and often several individual sources, all named "International
genealogical Index (R)" It would seem more logical to me to have a
single IGI source, with all the information from these individual
sources going into detail fields. Would this be a more logical
approach and, if so, is there any way to achieve it?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Tony

RE: [LegacyUG] Wrong Family

2010-02-19 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Georgia:

Since you've already entered all the data, and since there's a chance these
people are related to your husband's grandmother in some way, I would *unlink*
your husband's grandmother from the false parents rather than deleting them.
This would preserve the source citations and events you've already entered for
them and also maintain links from the false parents to their other children.
The parents and other children will remain in your database as a separate tree
or small family group and you can find them any time from View > Tree Finder.
(Click the Refresh button each time you use this handy tool.) If you discover
the true relationship later, it will be a simple matter to reattach the family
group properly. Of course, you'd also want to add plenty of notes in your
database about the discrepancy.
