how do I do a search for information contained within my notes field

It never seems easy to me, and I always get lost when I need to do

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I print a list of people married in a certain county?

2010-05-31 Thread Robert Carneal USA
See if this works:

1> Press CTRL-F
2> Select the Detailed Search tab, and choose the following settings:
2A> Set Look for Whom <=> Marriage
2B> Set Where to look <=> Marr. Event Place
2C> Set How to look <=> Contains
2D> Set What to look for <=> Miami-Dade County

Change "Miami-Dade County" to whatever it is you want to find, and
try it. Will that do the job for you? (don't forget to spell it the
same way! Some people enter "Washington" for what to search for, and
are surprised to see Washington D.C. and Washington State both found.)

Thank you.

I am having the same problem using a Brother HL 6050 D. I setup a test
with both a Family Group Sheet and a Descendants Report. I used the
"printer Setup" selection to select Duplex and Left side. Then when I
actually Print, I get two sheets instead of one. For the Descendants
reports from my Grandfather, I got a total of 13 pages instead of 7.

RE: [LegacyUG] Ancestors Report Help - current build 7.4.0.39

2010-05-31 Thread Jan Roberts
But my defaults show what they should show - i.e. no 'someone' except for where
spouse is unknown. It was only in one instance (that I have found where an
individual marriage 'wording options' tab was showing 'married someone' and I
can't remember whether I added this person and spouse before or after
downloading 7.4.0.39, and as I hadn't created a report for this family prior to
the other day I don't know if the problem existed before. As I have also said
I can't imagine entering the husband, then the marriage date or the child, then
the spouse as it is just not something I have ever done (except I have added
children before knowing name of wife - in this case I had all the information
at the one time from the one source.)

Jan,
It is the defaults in the My Options > Customise > View > Edit marriage
which need changing. It is this master default which governs what you see in
the couple's Marriage Screen options, where you can change them for any
specific couple.

Please visit
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/fergys/ScreenShot.png where I have put a copy of
my Edited Marriage defaults (Options>Customise>View>Edit Marriage Defaults).

As Dennis correctly points out this may not change those which already have
"someone", and is not a complete solution, but will stop it happening for
future entries. To deal with a point in your later posts, you may have
already had them set as I have them but the last update reset this default
back to include "someone". BTW it may also have reset some of the other
defaults which you may changed.

Finally, see Dennis's complete solution using LTools, in this thread.

To clarify no photographs live within Legacy, Legacy only saves the path to

Yes, that will work. You will be, in fact, using the photograph as a
Source for the Event, *not* Sourcing the photograph itself.

like to import any multimedia (without asking first). So I do not plan on
having the actual scan of the photo living in Legacy , I plan on creating a

As an example I have a four generation family photo. The photo is the only
evidence that I have that the great grandchild met his great grandfather.
The great grandfather lived in Nebraska, and the rest of the family lived in
Wyoming. I plan on making a family reunion event, then hopefully using the
artifact template as the source template. Hopefully that will work.

Legacy does have an Artifacts template, but to what do you plan to
attach it? You cannot Source a photograph unless you make it the
subject of an Event, but even then you would be citing that Artifact
(the photograph) as the Source for the photograph!

If, for example, the photo was a picture of a Dinner Party and you make
the Dinner Party the subject of the Event, with the photo attached, you
can then cite that Artifact (the photograph) as the Source.

I would say the photo is a source. I plan on this approach. I have not
looked yet to see if Legacy has a Artifacts template. I plan on adding the
source, in the source detail notes I can add details, places, who, etc. Good

Quote: ...there is no "source" button to point the source of the picture

I think you're getting a bit too convoluted there. Or Legacy's just not
up to it. A photo you're attaching to a person or event is supporting
the person or event. Going one level deeper and putting a source to the
picture itself, and connecting that to a person in your database is
getting very complicated.

Annotating photos, such as copyrights, sources, etc can be done with
jpeg comments which I don't use, or IPTC which I do. Legacy doesn't read
that unless you put it in the Description field before importing and
even then not for sure.

As things are, I would suggest putting a note somewhere in the vicinity.

To be honest with you, I can't see the need to add a Source, in the
usual sense, to a picture. When you add a picture in Legacy there is a
field named Desc where you can add such information as "Taken by Joe
Bloggs in his garden at 123 High Street Anytown, part of Auntie Mary's
collection given to this researcher in 2006." Is that not sufficient?

Re: [LegacyUG] Introduction and a Picture/Source Question

2010-05-31 Thread Connie Sheets
Lana,

Welcome to the list and Legacy!

I think of a photograph as a source (like an old letter), not something that
needs to have a citation attached.

What would you include in the citation if you attached a source to it? That it
is a photograph of James Doe, taken about 1952, and you received a copy from
Aunt Marie? I'd put that in the description.

Or, as you've already figured out, you can create a Photographic Event and
attach a citation to that.

BTW, this list requires that posts be in plain text. Please turn off HTML when
posting.

[LegacyUG] How to change a source citation

2010-05-31 Thread blrrcn
Hello,I changed the source citations!Sort of an extension of
Connie's suggestion, using the source clipboard also copied the source details
and scan,which I didn't want to enter(maybe I didn't explain myself fully) I
wanted to change what was entered in the "edit master source definition"
window. What I did was, create a correct source that I wanted to enter in place
of the wrong source.I then took all the names from the "passenger list" event
list(that had the wrong source) and then went to the wrong source for the
individual, cleared the source definition and entered XXX,so I had a source
XXX and then combined it with the correct source, that accomplished what I
wanted to do.I am truly amazed at the versatility of Legacy and what it can
accomplish!Thank you for you input.Brian

Not in Legacy! I've been using Legacy since 3.something and enclosing
anything in quotes as part the given name has always been the way that a
nickname or other family name could be defined and then used in reports.

Personally, I detest "Initials With A Period". I think omitting the
period looks neater, but that's only a personal observation. There is
absolutely no need to introduce a 'new' standard. The number of
individuals that this would apply to, world-wide, must be minimal.

As others have said, this is what the option to Exclude From Potential
Problems is for! The option works at the Global level *and* at the level
of an individual. Your solution is already there!

Why not use the “exclude from potential problems”? There is a check box in

The reason I mentioned this "initial without a period" is because in the past
such a single letter in the name was identified by surrounding it with quote
marks as Glade "S" Price. This would indicate that the S was not an
abbreviation but just the letter. Now the use of quote marks in Legacy is to
indicate a nickname or preferred name so something else is needed to identify a
single letter name and not just exclude it from potential problems. It may be
too trivial for a standard to be adopted but as several others have commented
it has obviously not been resolved.

I have lots of these in my tree where a single letter was used as a
middle name to denote the family. All siblings received the same
middle "name" letter.

I identify these in my tree by *not* having a period/dot after them.

Where I have a middle initial but not the full middle name I place a
period/dot after the initial letter.

Obviously I do not want Legacy adding, removing or changing these
subtle identifiers.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to change a source citation

2010-05-31 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I think the task needs the slow fix. Go to the Master Source List for "New York
Passenger Manifest 1820-1957" IMMIGRATION, tag everyone on an unused tag. Add
the new source for "New York > Passenger Manifest 1897-1957 "PASSENGER" to all
tagged. As you 'copy' the details from the persons' IMMIGRATION to PASSENGER
remove the tag, or confirm which were IMMIGRATION. Then delete the inaccurate
source choice. Writing the SQL or Access code, (which I doubt will save any
time anyway) will not be as smart about who belongs in which list than you are.
And besides, when the slow way is done, you are sure it is correct, No
rethinking, did it work?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to change a source citation

2010-05-31 Thread Connie Sheets
Brian,

You still want some of the citations to read 1820-1957, but you want to change
"several" of them to read 1897-1957, correct?

That being the case, pull up one of the citations you want to fix, edit it and
when you click on Save you will be asked whether you want to "Apply the change
to ALL references of this Master Source" or "Apply the change to a NEW copy of
this Master Source."  Choose the second option, Apply to a NEW copy.

Copy the new source you have just created to the Source Clipboard, paste it
into each event you want to correct, then delete the old incorrect source.

I wish there was an easier way, but there isn't, as far as I know.

Jan,
It is the defaults in the My Options > Customise > View > Edit marriage
which need changing.
