[LegacyUG] Edit Sentence Definition - Marriage
I found an old post (shown below) where the user, Ruth, wanted to add the name of a spouse to an individual's event. User Graham responded to Ruth's post saying that it worked for him. I want to do the same thing. For example, since marriage is a major event in a person's life, I'd like to create an individual event that would go something like [FirstName] married [WifeFullName]. I wonder how Graham got this to work, if anyone else has had luck doing it. C. G. Ouiment seemed to indicate it only made sense (worked) when used in Couple/Marriage events. (If there was an option to capture the marriage data [date and place], that would be great, but realise that would be a suggested enhancement.) Thanks, Christine RE: [LegacyUG] Edit Sentence Definition - Marriage C.G. Ouimet Fri, 06 Jul 2007 14:31:26 -0700 That would make sense. C.G. I think it only works if I put the event under Marriage Events. Thanks. Ruth It works for me. The only thing I can think of is that you don't have data for all fields. You could put the [CoupleFirstName] in all the sentence definitions and see if it makes a difference. When I changed the field choices at the top of the event definition window and had no data the sentence was blank. Fwd: Re: [LegacyUG] Step-children.... in Family Group Sheets
Hi all, I'm a new Legacy user and just joined the list. I found the stepchildren thread in the archive, and was able successfully to set a stepson's status as step. So far so good. Those parents and stepson are part of a descendants report. In the report options - descendant chart - include tab, child status is grayed out, along with lots of other options. I thought perhaps those were enabled in Legacy Deluxe, so I paid the upgrade fee and installed it. But they're still grayed out. I'd also like to indicate divorce situations on that descendant chart, but marriage status is also grayed out. Have I missed something somewhere that would turn those options on? Thanks very much! Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Step-children.... in Family Group Sheets
Mike, I would like the same thing, but I'm not aware of any way to do it. I've just been going through the same thing. I've come to the conclusion that I should make little use of the basic Descendant Chart report and depend more on the Descendant Narrative report. It's not perfect, but at least those statuses show up. In either report, the child will show up twice if you are descending down through the biological parent -- once for each marriage of that parent. For the Descendant Narrative report, the child-parent status shows in the 'step' case (or whatever explicit status you have assigned). If the step child has children/descendants, make sure you check 'Don't repeat duplicate lines' for the report format. Be careful when assigning the second set of parents to the step child. You need to 'select' the birth parents when closing the 'Parents of ... panel. Otherwise, the child might have the incorrect ancestry. I had been shying away from creating multiple parents, leaning towards a mostly biological ('genealogy') model, due mainly to these report issues. However, more and more I find that relatives really want to see adopted and step children as part of their family. (The 'family history' model.) Of course the biological relationships are always available within the database, even if certain reports are muddled. BTW, your e-mail Subject line says 'Family Group Sheets'. This report does show the statuses, unlike the Descendant Chart (and likewise the Legacy Charting graphical descendant chart). [LegacyUG] Change Source Name problem
Many years ago, I created a source name called Newspaper Clipping. Bad move! Most of the items are from the NY Times, but not all. I would like to change the name of the source for the NY Times articles to New York Times. Fine, but that gives me list of the individuals with that source. I want a list of Newspaper Clippings that do NOT contain NY Times. [LegacyUG] Viewing census pages
Hi, I store all my census sheets in a folder under Legacy. To access these pages I click on the pictures icon and use the 'files' option. This has worked successfully until I recently installed a Nero Multimedia program. I now get the message that there is no default media player set up on my computer when I click on one of the census pages. All other jpeg files on my computer still work fine and display on the Windows Picture Viewer, it's just in Legacy that I cannot display them. I'm using Windows 7. Any ideas why this should have happened? Re: [LegacyUG] Change Source Name problem
Go to Master List, find Source Type, find your 'Newspaper clippings'. Highlight it, then choose show list, then tag all. First find all who are in list, and hopefully each clipping has the information somewhere. Create one as 'Newspaper clippings - New York Times' then 'Newspaper clippings - Chicago Tribune' etc. Once you have 'most' of the source title, created, you can change each source individually, to the new 'flavor' of clipping. But I do not know what other newspapers I have put into the Source Detail, so I cannot search for them. Many individuals have each have more than 20 Newspaper Clipping as the source name. I do not know how to create a list of those source entries. All I can do is create a list of the individuals who have a source entry of Newspaper Clipping. That is no help. Re: [LegacyUG] Viewing census pages
Hi Ron, Why do you use the 'files' option rather than the 'Picture' option? If you used 'Picture' option then Legacy itself would be the viewer. I can see a possible advantage to using 'files' option as you do since the census images could be viewed in a separate window. Windows can assign separate default programs for 'file.jpg' and 'file.jpeg'. If you right click on one of the census images in Windows explorer and go down to 'Open With' the program at top of list is the Windows default for that file type. Go to bottom of list to 'Choose Default Program' and select the previous program (before Nero). Good Luck. -- Richard Van Wasshnova http://www.gencircles.com/users/vanwasshnova http://gw.geneanet.org/vanwasshnova On Wed, Sep 8, 2010 at 4:34 PM, Ron Weeks rdwe...@bigpond.com wrote: Hi, I store all my census sheets in a folder under Legacy.
