Gwen, if you are using the Deluxe edition, you can copy and paste lots of
things with the clipboard. Do you know how to use that feature? It's not an F
key. It's the white block with the up arrow in it.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Repeating info & Direct Line

Hi there
I was wondering if it is possible to use one of the F keys to repeat
info when typing into the Family page.
ie: If I type St George, Sheffield, Wry, Eng
can I then say push F3 or similar to repeat this info on another
Family page for another family member.
I know you can start typing but often you might have several St
George address's and need to go through
them all to get the right one.

Also is it possible to get a printout for a Direct line of a family
only so I can sift out the ones I need info
for. I am finding it hard to do this and wonder if there is an easy
route for it.

Thanks heaps
Cheers

Gwen :)

Right-click on the word 'in' and you will see a list of the last 10 entries
to choose from. (Right-click brings up all sorts of menus and information,

2011-01-25 Thread Cathy-0
Gwen,

When you say "Family page," do you mean the "Individual Information" window
which opens from the Family View?

If so and if the location is in the same field for the second family member
as it was in the first, then you can click on the button "Repeat" found
just above the "Exclude from Potential problems" button on the "Individual
Information" window. This will repeat the same information found in the
same field from the previous person's window.

Highlight the location you want to use again, right click and choose 'copy',
then you can right click and choose 'paste' whenever you find another place
that the locations needs to go. It will stay in your clipboard until you
'copy' something different to the clipboard. I don't know if you could use
the F keys for that; I imagine that it is possible but I think it would be
more work than doing it this way. You'd have to have one F key to do the
copy function and another to do the paste function anyway.

I think that using Legacy you have little option other than to do them
individually.

I apologize for my previous confusing post.

I am using Legacy 7.5 version 7.5.0.42 Build Date 20 Jan 2011
Standard version.

And it looks as though there is a more recent build as of the 24th, so I
shall give that a try later today..

In regards to my previous post:
Ron Ferguson, I must respectfully disagree with your statement that Source
Writer is available in both versions. I believe it was in the past, but it
is no longer. This is supported by the comparison chart on Legacy's download
page.
>From the Options menu, I select Customize, then the Sources tab.
At the bottom left of the Sources tab is "Source Entry System"
I cannot select Source Writer System since I am using the Standard version
of Legacy (I get a popup offering the Deluxe version). I do not recall this
happening with the Standard 7.4 edition.
I have no quarrel with the absence of Source Writer - as I have learned more
about documentation I have started using the Basic Source system more since
I find it satisfies my inner control-freak, I just have a number of older
master sources created with Source Writer under previous versions of Legacy.

Thank you for your suggestion, Virginia, to reset to defaults.
Unfortunately, that made no difference in how my reports are looking.

As my family file grows, I have started to re-think how I wish to organize
my sources. So perhaps my difficulties will be a incentive to implement my
nascent source clean-up plan. I inherited all of my mother's genealogical
research earlier this year and wh, there is a lot!

Here is, I hope, a clearer picture of what I am trying to accomplish and the
difficulties I am having. I realized that some of the information I provided
previously (if it was even understandable) was not quite accurate, so I have
attempted to amend that in the following.

I have seven distinct master sources (yes, too many master sources!)
assigned to a certain individual in my family file: Allen E. Gorham. I can
view and edit these sources and their details by clicking on the "Show list
of assigned sources" icon visible in the "Family" view.
three of those sources have a bullet next to them, indicating (I believe)
that they were created with Source Writer in a previous version of Legacy.
One of those master sources has been edited by me since I installed 7.5..
The other two have not been edited since the install. The other four sources
do not have the bullet and were created using the basic system subsequent to
my 7.5 install.
Clicking on the "Reports" icon on the toolbar, I am directed to several tabs
where I can chose what type of report and options I wish.
I chose "Individual Report" and select Allen E. Gorham. After setting the
report options to default (just to undo any hare-brained thing I tried
earlier) I go into Report Options, Sources tab and check the Print Source
Citations box.
In the "Include" tab, I check the box for Event Information.
I assume that these actions will produce an individual report with source
detail and citations for events in that individual's life. This maybe where
I am going wrong in my thinking.

When I preview the report on the screen, I have two sources, not seven,
listed at the end of the report.
The two sources that do appear are the two created with Source Writer in a
previous version and unmodified by me since. The detail information and
comments of the five missing sources appear in the report, but the source
citations do not.

I hope that is a bit clearer and that I've provided an interesting puzzle
for the board.

I would 'transcribe' the PERSI list into ToDos, because
1. might take multiple trips/libraries.
2. once a ToDo is converted to a Source or your list of not used, you can
delete the finished ToDo, but maintain the PERSI list in your hardcopy files.
In my previous discussion I would have instead of CEN have PERcall number, then
the title of the article, so the PERSI list can be organized in the
repostitories fashion.

The two sources that do appear are the two created with Source Writer in a

I hope that is a bit clearer and that I've provided an interesting puzzle for

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: How to manage Research / TODOs / Sources ?

2011-01-25 Thread James Cook
It is not from a Legacy TODO report. It is a list of periodicals I
found searching PERSI. So I have TODOs in legacy. I have a list of
sources to lookup I found at PERSI in a separate file, which I've been
taking to the library. Then when I'm done, I still have a TODO in
Legacy and a piece of paper with the sources I checked in my notebook.
Things are disjointed, and I've been trying to figure out how to
manage this with Legacy TODOs. It may be that, regardless of the info
I've read stating TODOs are useful for this, this really is not
something to best managed with Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Re: sources incomplete on reports in 7.5

2011-01-25 Thread Elizabeth Young
I apologize for my previous confusing post.

I am using Legacy 7.5 version 7.5.0.42 Build Date 20 Jan 2011
Standard version.

And it looks as though there is a more recent build as of the 24th, so I
shall give that a try later today.

As my family file grows, I have started to re-think how I wish to organize
my sources. So prehaps my difficulties will be a incentive to implement my
nascent source clean-up plan. I inherited all of my mother's
genealogical research earlier this year and wh, there is a lot!

One of those master sources has been edited by me since I installed 7.5. The
other two have not been edited since the install. The other four sources do
not have the bullet and were created using the basic system subsequent to my
7.5 install.

Since I am not LDS, I had removed those tabs years ago. When I did that some

'The piece of paper'. Is it the To Do list that you printed out to take to the
library. What I do is add to each To Do document, the date I visited the
repository and found the article was not useful. I keep that list for future
visits, because I may find that I looked for one branch, but another branch may
be there instead.
Once I find a document which gives the facts I need, I print a list of the To
Dos that I will then remove from my computer, for archival purposes.

Use #1. When it says 'link' to someone, it means that it is the same
individual. Sometimes you'll have Tom Tripcony and you do want it to 'link' to
Thomas Tripcony. Even if the name is exactly the same, LFS will not link two
people without you telling it to do it. I haven't tried this the last couple
of days but I'm happy it is like this now. As you know, there can be so many
name variations and sometime LFS wasn't giving the option to link to the person
that I wanted it to. It was only giving the option to link to the 'most likely'
person to match mine. Once you have played with it a little, you will love
this. Make frequent backups though, more than usual; that would be my
recommendation. Because there is no 'undo' button when you are working on
this. You'll have to manually correct any mistakes you make.

Hi again Sheila:

I have just been looking at your situation and I have been able to find a
partial solution that may work for you. Go to the name list > options> custom
choose the position where you want the BEPSC information to show. There are
eight possible positions. I tried the second.

Then when you highlite a person in the name list and click on the "details" tab
you will see your BEPSC information. I just tried it so you have taught me
something new.

I hope this will work for you.

May I suggest you click on "Options" (top "tool bar"), then click on

Then, rerun your report and see if that makes any difference. (Hope

Go to the name list, click on options, click on customize display and you
will see the same window as you used in the index view to change what you
see there. Good luck! I haven't had any trouble with downloads removing
anything from my file thank goodness and you are the first i've heard that

you. It is usually the case with a major version change that everything
will revert back to defaults. Sad and frustrating but at least you can get
everything back to the way you like it. Legacy has so many options to tweak
and we really get spoiled by that, don't we? Kathy

Since you never had a vers 7 deluxe version how did you ever see Source Writer?
I thought SR was only available in Deluxe.

[LegacyUG] Legacy update

2011-01-25 Thread Sheila Maynard
Hi,

Thanks everyone, tried everything, now got the BEPSC in the index, also the
reports, BUT still not got them in the NAME LIST and am finding it very
annoying. Maybe it is a change made in the update, I am sure things will be
better once all the teething troubles are ironed out, but at the moment I am
very disappointed with the way it is working, I have spent all week just
sorting things out, when I first download the update it lost ALL my family
records, luckily I had back ups, so please be careful people.

All I want to do is family history and I seem to be turning into a computer
geek.

Regards

Sheila

[LegacyUG] Re: How to manage Research / TODOs / Sources ?

2011-01-25 Thread James Cook
I appreciate the input and being given a look into these spreadsheets
that have been mentioned. I may be missing something, but it seems
their intent is for a different sort of research than I had in mind in
the OP. For the most part, these sheets appear to be a tool for
organizing and/or displaying the research findings, but not so much
about the research and sources themselves.

Maybe an example would help...
I have a female ancestor. I am pretty sure about her descendants, and
think I can make a convincing case. However, I have nothing that
directly ties her to who I believe is her son, and my gg-grandfather.
I do have a direct tie from her to a different son, and that son in my
gg-grandfathers home in a census where he's listed as a 1/2 brother.
This lady's ancestry is an even bigger question. I have enough
information that it would seem too much to be coincidence, but not
enough to make a good case. I am trying to find the evidence to fit
all the pieces together.

What I have to work with is she came from Tennessee. If she is part
of the family I suspect she is, then it would be from Cannon County.
A couple experts at the local research center have warned me that
Smith and Cannon Counties are hard places to research. That it seems
people from there just don't want to be found. She came to Missouri
with three children and no husband. It looks like she may have had a
brother already in Missouri, and that her mother came with her as
well. I'm speculating her father must have died in Tennessee and the
family came to live with the son/brother in Missouri. She then
marries a couple different times. Then family story says she died in
Texas while visiting my gg-grandfather who was living there at that
time.

So what I'm looking for is a death and probate info. on her father in
Tennessee. An obit on her brother in Missouri. Any marriage records
for her in Tennessee. A newspaper announcement of her marriages in
Missouri. A probate record on her in either Missouri or Texas. Death
records for her in Texas. The hope being that one or more of these
things, if I can ever find them, is that it will give me a
relationship to my gg-grandfather, her brother, or her parents. (The
brother is fairly well documented, so a tie to him is helpful).

My current planning is to put together a list of periodicals to search
looking for this information. My last trip to the library included 25
to scan through, mostly on the brother. Now I have a piece of paper,
with 25 periodical citations on it where I found nothing. I am
wondering how others use TODOs for this sort of research (or if they
do), and your data entry method for best managing it.

Does that help at all explain what I'm looking for at all?

One method you might want to try is to first tag the individuals you are
interested in. Then export them to a new Legacy file. I believe this
will only export the Master Sources that are used by the individuals
being exported. You can then work from that list.

RE: [LegacyUG] Merge Problems

2011-01-25 Thread William Boswell
If you're talking about merging people, I've noticed when merging two people
together that Legacy will delete the events not selected. I had hoped with a
merge that all events, even duplicates, would be merged into the one person.
I've found that it's better to do a manual edit within the merge screen for
both the left and right people.

In another program that I won't mention, it merges both the people together
retaining all the information. That is what a merge should do.

Make sure you backup everything before doing a merge or any other procedure
that could result in a disaster. Legacy is good about prompting us for that.

I've gone to the help file on this one. The process they outline is
to import all data into one family file. I was merging from one into
another. They make a statement that when merging the right into the
left, that the right is deleted. This is fine when merging duplicates
in a single file, but not at all good when pulling in from a separate
file. I believe that is the cause of loosing data. Now I know, and
won't make that mistake again. Even so, I don't believe software
should allow me to mess up my source without so much as a warning. If
it is not recommended to merge from one fine into another, then the
software shouldn't allow me to do so or, at the very least, explain
the dangers before proceeding.

Hi Laura,

Do you mean "how do I unsubscribe from this mailing list"? There is a
link at the bottom of every list post for that.

There is no other choice. You either subscribe and receive all the
mail, or you don't subscribe.

Anyone can read the archive, you don't have to be subscribed to access
it - but if you want to participate, you need to be subscribed.

You may find a filter or rule useful to direct the list mail to its own
folder away from your Inbox.

If you mean something else, then please explain further.

Please post in plain text.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] sources incomplete on reports in 7.5

2011-01-25 Thread Ron Ferguson
Elizabeth,

I am afraid that I find your post awfully confusing. Source writer has been
available for version 7.4 and later and has not changed since its launch,
therefore, there is no such thing as “old” and “new” Source Writer.

The format used is selected by the user and is found in
Options>Customise>Sources. One cannot change a source from Basic to Source
Writer from within Legacy. There is not, to my knowledge, any bug in the
system. It should be noted that second and subsequent displays of a Source
Writer source are not the same as the first, and the format for subsequent
display is shown on the Source-Citation (Detail) screen.

Perhaps you would like to have a fresh look at your post and supply examples
for us to be able to understand your problem. In case you are not aware this
list does not accept attachments, so you will need to write the examples.
