RE: [LegacyUG] AKA in sentence definition ?
If you put the AKA or nickname, or preferred name, in brackets it will be used in reports. For example, my maiden name was Janet Kay SULLIVAN, but I am known as Jan - so I have entered myself into Legacy as Given name: Janet Kay "Jan" Surname: SULLIVAN. In report options I have selected 'Use quoted names for narratives' and 'Remove Quoted given names' (Only applicable for narrative type reports, not charts although I *think* remove quoted given names works everywhere.) So a narrative sentence would read "Jan married ." etc. but anywhere I have asked (in a sentence definition) for full name to be used, or where full names are used by default it would read "Janet Kay SULLIVAN" rather than Janet Kay "Jan" SULLIVAN". However, it is global, not specific to a particular sentence definition. Just tried it out, and if you use [Name] in your sentence definition you get Janet Kay SULLIVAN, if you use [FirstName] you get Jan. Cheers Jan -Original Message- From: Robert E. [LegacyUG] Mass change a sentence definition - Possible?
Hello. Can I change sentence definition en-masse? For example, if I have: [FirstName]'s in every sentence definition, and I wanted to change it to: [HisHer] and replace every occurrence of [FirstName]'s, could I do that? If so, how? I don't see it. RE: [LegacyUG] Changing Photo Link in Source Detail
Ray, No need to buy additional software to convert to pdf. Legacy can do that for you. From the Picture Gallery where you have your 6 pictures, select the "Print Photo Album" button. This will allow you to create a photo album that can be saved in pdf format. Once you have it saved, you can attach it to the source. In the picture gallery, choose the "File" option to attach the pdf file to your source. I use the photo album quite a bit to put multi-page images into one document. It really is quite flexible. -Anne Mamiya -Original Message- From: Ray Mechler [mailto:rmech...@austin.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2011 12:42 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Changing Photo Link in Source Detail Richard- Thanks for the response. You are correct that I do not have Access or Itools (I have dabbled in Access though I opted not to buy the software with my current home PC since I recognize that I am far from competent with it). I like the notion of creating one multipage PDF document with the images of all 6 pages of my document. That would certainly simplify the task ahead of me. However I do not currently have a robust tool to convert JPEGs to PDFs. The freeware that I downloaded does not have the option to combine multiple JPEGs into a single PDF. By the way, does anyone have a suggestion of a good PDF converter? Finally it seems that the best solution might be for me to do as you have done and to attach my photos or PDF to the Master Source and then reference the page in the Source Detail. I was hoping to use the Master Source to reference multiple documents that I might find in the online collection that I was mining. As it turns out I have only uncovered 2 relevant documents so I would only have to create 2 similar Master Sources. I suppose that is not a great loss and it will keep me from having to manually revise over 300 citations (x 6 JPEGs for each citation!). Thanks, again. [LegacyUG] Minneapolis User's Group
Hello Legacy Users, There are a couple of us in the Twin Cities area that are interested in getting a user's group going. I have a lot of things on my plate so I have been dragging my feet for a few years hoping someone else would get the ball rolling. That didn't happen. I have given a couple of brief talks on using Legacy software but nothing in depth. I have been amazed watching some of the videos [from webinars]. They are great. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who might join such a group. Is there enough interest to make it worthwhile? I was thinking that it would be best to email me directly rather than reply to the rest of the list: mackr...@yahoo.com Let me know if you would be interested in joining the group, helping teach in the group, and/or help organize the group. RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Problem in Chronological View
Richard, the specific dates of the marriage and marriage events all occurred on the same date, therefore, any date can be used as long as it is the same date. As for the categories, I assume that the 'Marriage" category comes from the actual data entered into the Marriage Information Screen, for two reasons; 1) because its color is different than the other two events; and 2) there are only two events entered into the marriage events, 1) being when they obtained the 'Marriage License,' and 2) the actual 'Marriage Ceremony' being performed. I hope this is a little clearer. RE: [LegacyUG] Sort Problem in Chronological View
Hi Charles, When you are on the marriage screen have you tried using the "set order" buttons to move the events up or down to the order in which you want them to appear. In my program I entered the events in the order that you gave first, tried the Chronological view. I then used the "set order" buttons to place them in the order that you wanted and checked the Chronological view and they were in the proper order that you wanted. Re: [LegacyUG] Location/Address Fields (was ANOTHER short location name question)
thanks everyone, Ron I did mean the location field, shouldn’t have referred to it as address. I probably wasn’t clear but I was really looking for a way to sort street names without a lot of commas appearing in the reports. I’ll think about it a bit longer before deciding how to tackle it and will look at Micheles’ suggestion to use the plus additional info or the notes. BTW Jenny and Ron, yes our Victorian inner city houses (the ones that are left) still have their old house names attached but they are seldom used nowadays as part of the address. Erica From: cranberryf...@cobridge.tv Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2011 8:47 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Location/Address Fields (was ANOTHER short location name question) I never put the street address in the location field anyway so this is a moot point for me. My reasons for using the 4 locations fields is 1) consistency 2) so that the Legacy search features will work correctly, and so that I will be able to integrate with FamilySearch. If I had a location like Smith Farm. I would write it as , Lamar, Mississippi, USA [I would leave the town blank assuming the farm name was used in lieu of the town name, Lamar is the county, Mississippi is the state, and USA is the county] Next to any location field there is a plus sign where you can put any additional information. You can also explain it in the notes. Firstly can you confirm which you mean the address book or the Location List – I think the latter, and have answered accordingly. Commas!! Ugh!! It has always been my practice to write a location as it is written and not using the so called American 4 field convention which tries to fit locations into this synthetic construction. It is still common in England for houses to have names as well as/instead of using numbers, in fact my ex was brought up on a farm whose location was Farm Name, Town, Derbyshire, England. Note there is no street, simply because there isn’t one, just a track leading up a mountain. Inserting commas instead would imply that there is a street of unknown name.. Wrong, there isn’t. For ease of comparison between locations of varying fields set the location to read from right to left – go to View>Master Lists>Locations>Sort. At the bottom right set to read from right to left, click OK to exit, and check the little box next to the Sort Button. I always include the full location, including the house name/number.. street, etc. in the long location, and with few exceptions, certainly no more than any other method, it maps correctly. When you think about it, the program is doing what you'd expect. The Events on the Marriage screen are Marriage Events and in reports are referred to as something like "Events in their marriage were ..." so obviously Legacy will mention the Marriage itself first and then go on to detail Events which (it believes) occurred within - not before - the Marriage. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
