You might take a look at LTools. There's a DAR Lineage Worksheet in
the program, which makes it *really* easy. Select your Ancestor RIN
and Descendant RIN and voila! you have the worksheet.

http://zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/what-is-ltools/

It was created by one of the Legacy users and I wish I would have had
it when working on my application!

Lineage worksheets are on the enhancement request list for Legacy.

I didn't see an answer for you  I think there is a place to turn off the
automatic resizing, but I think it affects all type, not just the Notes fields.
As I remember, if you turn it off, you can set the size.  Look under
"Customize"... I'm not on my Legacy computer, else my answer could be more

I keep a lot of information under Notes.  When it opens, I get a small
window with reasonably large type.  As I expand Notes to full screen
size, the text is very small.  So, next, I use zoom to enlarge the text
to 20 point size and the text is very readable.

Even so, I always want the text to automatically open in 20 point...I
don't want to have to click to enlarge every time I use Notes.  I didn't
see any help for this so I'm appealing to the Group for help.

Jane,

I had to do that for a DAR submission.  To do so, I tagged every person in the
specific line that I wanted and then exported them to a new Legacy file.  then I
ran the Ancestor report.

However, if you also want all the events included, I would do the above but
instead of the Ancestor Report, I would go to the oldest Ancestor in the line I
was viewing and run a Descendant Book (a.k.a. Modified Register Report) which
could include all the events for the people in the line,.

Even with a number indicating your personal surety level on the relationship,
the question remains where to put your "reasoning" notes, right?

When relationship is unproven, I will enter the person(s) and enter my
reasoning in Research Notes, which do appear on reports, attaching sources to
that field.

Excellent original question and discussion--thanks all!

Sorry but i'm not receiving the mails so I can´t answer directly

Thanks for ll the opinions.
I use notes but they are all mixed in the same place.
The example I gave is the simplest (and is an example not a real case).
I have lots of cases where the missing "link" is to the grandparents that only
show in the marriage of some (or only one) of the grandsons.
I still think it would be more "neat" with a "relationship" surety level. All
the solutions are a bit "klundge" so I think the program needs to address this.

You could also imagine in the ancestor or descendant maps, the thickness of the
relationship line dependent of the surety level...
Very friendly is'nt it? :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Going Blind working on Illinois

2011-07-18 Thread P Jones
Thank you. I will most welcome a fix for the problem. When I first reported
the problem, my Master Report location was not using Comic Sans, the font I
had chosen sometime ago but then changed itself without me touching anything
on the screen or computer and is now also showing Comic Sans. Gremlins
again!? But it works.

In trying your problem I found that the Add / edit Location screen does
not use the fonts set in Options > Customize > Fonts and have entered a
problem report on that issue. The Master Location list on screen did use
my font settings.

2011-07-18 Thread Brian/Support
It seems to be some type of report font you are having the problem with
not a display on screen issue. What is the name of the report and how do
you access it. The inset bit of a list that you included does not match
any report I am familiar with though you may be using options for the
report layout that make your list different from mine. The reports for
location that I tried did use the fonts I set for data values.

Disregard the problem. I have no idea what happened but while I was writing
the email to you I had Legacy still up on my screen and without me touching
anything in that program, the font for the location changed. Beats me what
happened but it managed to fix itself.

have for some time. The problem is occurring when I am editing the
locations. The locations are not showing in Comic Sans but are showing in a
font that makes it very difficult to distinguish the first 3 letters of
Illinois as the capital "I" looks just like the two following letters. I
can't show you unless I use Rich Text.

Which screen and what part of the screen? You mentioned something about
locations but is that on the location edit screen or when locations are
displayed in some screen(s) you visit.

Go to Options > Customize > Fonts. There are three settings for fonts
that affect the parts of the screens. Labels (the names for boxes),
Data, the values in those boxes and Notes, the contents of note fields.

2011-07-18 Thread P Jones
It is the font shape more than the size that is the problem. I use Comic
Sans MS which prints the State name Illinois and the abbreviation IL.
However, it does not show the locations in the Locations list in Comic Sans.
This is how is is shown which is not Comic Sans. I went back and
double checked all my reports for the font setting as well as Options,
Customize. All are set for Comic Sans and show a stretch of 110%. I have
the location screen using about 1/2 of my 24" monitor to be able to read it
clearly although I normally use less than that for all my other work in
Legacy and on the computer. Hope that explains the problem more clearly to
both you and Sherry.

Is it an issue of the shape of the characters only, or is size an issue as
well? Have you also selected 'stretch fonts when resizing' in the customize
fonts. (Sometimes you need to minimise/maximise window for this to work).

Is there ANY way to change the font for such as Location and some other
places? I am beginning to think that location is just one of several places
where the font is built into the program and can't be changed by us.
Whatever has apparently been programed in shows Illinois as lllinois which
makes trying to make sure the state is spelled correctly a but difficult
regardless of the size of the page it is on.

I've tried every place I can find to make a change that will fix the
problem. Unfortunately, most of my family tree uses that State. I have set
the "Customize Fonts" to use a different font - one that I can use without
going cross-eyed so that the pages that can be changed do NOT use a font
that makes the state come out with what looks like 3 of the letter "l" in a
row followed by an "i" that tends to look a bit like the "l".

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA entry

2011-07-18 Thread hwedhlor
  Hi Mike,

It's nice to hear from another descendant of the
Aberdeenshire area. My mother's ancestors (MILNE) hail from
Aberdeenshire as well. Specifically from Aboyne and Cruden,
Easter Gask, and Glentanner.

Because Legacy has recently expanded its capability in
recording DNA results I am going to take that as an
opportunity to temporarily stretch the definition of the
purpose of the LUG under the guise of helping us better use
Legacy. That stretch is based on the need to understand not
only what is being recorded, but the meaning and implication
of the DNA data. Without that understanding we might easily
impart meanings, and draw conclusions about our lines that
are incorrect, and therefore lead others astray. It is not
my intent to open lengthy discussion of DNA testing, other
than about how such testing impacts our use of Legacy.

Mike, you posed two questions:

1. Is there some way we can determine at what point in time
these trees converge, and at what accuracy?

2. Is {/Are/} there areas where the DNA matching is simply
not true?

Addressing your second question first, DNA testing is very
accurate, and assuming there was no contamination of the DNA
samples, or errors in the handling and testing of those
samples, you can consider the DNA matching to be "true."
The testing results are what they are. It is in the
interpretation of those results that some questions arise.

Addressing your first question, when attempting to determine
the distance back in generations to a Most Recent Common
Ancestor (MRCA), it is important to remember that the
numbers provided by any DNA testing firm are _only an
estimate_ of the number of generations back to an MRCA.

The various research labs, and the genetic testing community
have established how often genes may be expected to mutate,
making it possible to base relational estimates on a
combination of the number of markers tested, and the number
of markers matching between any two Y-DNA samples.

The firm with which I contracted to test my Y-DNA was
FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA). FTDNA bases their estimates on
mutation rate studies conducted by the University of Arizona
and offers Y-DNA tests for 12, 37 or 67 markers. Estimates
of the distance between two samples is provided as a
percentage probability that the MRCA was no further back
than a certain number of generations.

For example, for a 67-marker test, if all 67 markers match
between two samples, then it is estimated that there is a
50% probability that the MRCA was no further back than 2
generations. If only 66 of 67 markers match, that sets the
estimate of a 50% probability back to 4 generations. The
percentage of probability increases as you push back further
in generations. That is there is a 90% probability for a
MRCA at 4 generations for a 67/67 match, and a 95%
probability for a MRCA at 6 generations for an 67/67 match.

In other words, as the number of markers tested decreases,
and the number of matches, decreases, the estimate to
generational separation from an MRCA increases.

You do not say which firm tested your samples, or how many
markers in the 46-marker test, were matched between the
tested samples. The testing firm should be able to provide
you with an explanation of their test results. That
explanation should include their rationale for their
estimates of generational separation.

I hope this helps, and did not stray too far from the
intended purpose of the Legacy User Group

One of the reasons why I use the AKA field for, very specifically, AKAs
only is that I don't want a silly sentence in Reports reading "James was
also known as Jame Brown, Janes Brown, Jas. Brawn, James Browne and Jas.
Brown." However, I would want one, where appropriate, reading "James
was also known as Peter Smith."

I would, though, record each and every one of those variations as it
occurred in my Source Citations, transcriptions and (because of the way
I use Censuses) in a Census Description field. In the case of my James
Brown example, I would probably have "Jim" as a Quoted Given Name if it
was obvious that this was his fequently-used nickname.

(Not saying anyone else is right or wrong, just explaining more fully
what I do and why.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Name Variations

2011-07-18 Thread cranberryfrog
When I write reports, I had type most of it anyway. I will import sections
of my file but then I do heavy editing. I want my reports to adhere to the
BCG standards which is impossible if you just run reprts from Legacy (no
fault of Legacy at all! There is just so much a database program can do). I
write newspaper and journal articles where things have to be in a certain
format. That is why I can use the AKA field to record every name I find for
that person. I won't be using the Legacy output anyway.

I agree with those who do not take the label "AKA" literally. When I hover the
cursor over the AKA icon, the sticky note that appears reads "add or edit other
names or spellings." I enter any variation that may have any value to me or
others down the road.

Just recently I figured out that in Ireland -- at least when and where my
family comes from -- the baptismal records are in Latin, not English. I also
figured out that Owen, which was my great-grandfather's name, is the Welsh
variant for the Latin "Eugenius". You bet I recorded Eugenius as an AKA even
though no one ever called him anything but Owen. But his church records are all
under Eugenius. However, minor scrivener's errors which are patently obvious I
do not record.

Re: [LegacyUG] obits

2011-07-18 Thread cranberryfrog
Sigh, it would only take me FOREVER to do this with 352 obits plus the time
it will take to look them all back up. I just wish there was a way to
change ONE of the sources and ALL of the identical ones would be updated.

By the way, I do a transcription of every obit. I have an event called
Obituary. It looks like..

Obituary
Augusta Chronicle
05 Feb 1912
Augusta, Richmond, Georgia, USA

Mrs. J. R. Lewis is laid to rest
Mrs. Ella Mae Davis Lewis died on Saturday at her residence after a lengthy
illness...

Unfortunately, I can't copy and paste :) :) :)

I don't understand why you need to delete anything. You are simply
attaching a file to an existing Source Detail. Admittedly, you need to
do it in up to 15 or so places for each file, but that's what I would
do. (This sort of thing is not so bad if you just tackle a few each day
and don't worry about getting it all done NOW!)

Yes, you could do that, but unless the Obit is very lengthy, I prefer to
paste a transcription into the Notes section of the Event.
