Re: [LegacyUG] The Latest Build
I didn't have Legacy running when I read your post a moment ago, Richard, so I fired it up and checked the Home tab - sure enough, it was telling me that there was a new version available, as Sherry indicated. Perhaps your copy of the program has yet to check for updates? I can't imagine that every copy checks every minute of the day that it's running, so it must take a while for them all to discover there is one available. Or however it works, I have no knowledge of it. The upshot is that the update is not secret. ;-) Regards, Wendy Richard Van Wasshnova said the following on 3/08/2011 6:06 p.m.: I have vers 7.5.0.105 and the Legacy home page says You have the latest build. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy file organization
No, not a fee, Leon. Here is how it is going to work... There WILL be some databases that will be restricted. To earn access you have to index at least 900 records per quarter via the FamilySearch Indexing. Each person you index can earn you 1, 3, or 5 points depending on how difficult the record is. I am currently indexing approx 500-800 points per month (and I am not even working hard) so I will have no problem gaining access to these databases. The LDS has not started the point system yet and we do not know when they will. The family tree portion of FamilySearch is not available to the general public yet, only to the LDS and to selected LDS beta testers. If you watch Geoff's Webinar on cleaning up your Legacy file prior to FamilySearch launching, you will learn a lot. It is very much like the old Ancestral File (not the IGI!) but in a newer, easier to use format. However, it will have a lot of the same problems as the Ancestral File as Geoff points out. He did say that you will be able to fix errors in a round about way (you can ask the contributor to fix the error, you can delete sections, you can choice which information is the correct info but be aware that other people behind you can do the same thing). We will just have to wait and see :) michele P.S. If some sort of IF/THEN/ELSE structure were available it could be done. The annoying restriction is that one can only use Desc, Date, Place and Notes as the first conditional field in an If...THEN sentence. I don't use the Address field, but someone who does might consider it worth proposing this being added to the list. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Hi! How can you change the name of a source from 'Unspecified'? I have set up a new master source as a template for the information contained on a standard birth certificate. I have called it 'Birth certificate template' but it would be nice if it weren't listed as 'Unspecified' And how do you remove sources you'll never need, such as LDSB (whatever that might be)? - you can always re-create then if eventually needed. Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources
Joan, I'm a bit confused by your question, but I hope one of these answers will be responsive: (1) An unspecified event (not source) is built in to Legacy for every person. As far as I know, you can't change it. What you can do, however, is ignore it. Make sure you've copied the source to the Source Clipboard, then delete the citation to the Unspecified Event. Then, attach the source to the event or events you want it attached to, such as Name, Date of Birth, etc. (2) If that is not what you're asking, then all you should have to do is rename the source from your Master Source List (Master Source ListEdit). For sources you never use, Master Source ListOptionsPurge Unused. Connie --- On Wed, 8/3/11, Joan Kemp jk...@yahoo.com wrote: How can you change the name of a source from 'Unspecified'? Thanks, Mike. I realise that a master source isn't a template - I'd just like to create a template so that I can be consistent save time filling in details. I've actually now filled in all my birth certificates - generically as a master source called 'Birth Certificate' under Event 'Birth', but specifically for each individual. Now getting onto marriages and I would like to be able to create an Event called 'Marriage' - just as there are Events under 'Assigned Sources' called 'Birth' and 'Unspecified' I've looked at the help file on sources but couldn't find what I needed. Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources
Joan, You can't create a template for your sources, per se. What you have to do is create a Master Source (such as the name of a book, or the state/country that issued the birth certificate) and then add Source Details (such as the page number of the book, or the birth certificate number). Most genealogy programs work this way, although they may use slightly different terminology. Legacy already supplies the templates for various kinds of sources including marriage records and birth certificates, or you can use the Basic Source system (which is a generic template for your sources). Once you've created a Master Source, you can use the Source Clipboard to paste the source into multiple events (although you may need to change the source detail depending upon how you've set up the Master Source). Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources
Joan, You really should do as Mike suggested and study the Help Files properly. Events and sources are not the same thing. An event is either a Fact eg. where somebody lived, or something which happened. A source contains the details as to from where you got the information eg. a census. A Master Source contains details which are common to a number of sources eg. the name and reference number for a census in a specific, State, County or whatever, and the Detail Source the specific details of the Source relating to the individual to which the Event pertains. If you go to the Legacy Home Tab in Legacy (next to the Family Tab) at the bottom right is a box with links to videos and tips from the experts contained on the Legacy website. I suggest that you have a look at these before jumping in with both feet and then having to start everything from scratch. When you have looked at these please feel free to come back if there are things which you still don't understand. Re: [LegacyUG] Citing Sources
Hi Joan. Others have already mentioned about the difference between the source record and the source detail, but I'll say it a different way. The source record is a master record that will be exactly the same for every person for whom it is used, whereas the source detail is the specific detail about page numbers or what-have-you that could be different for every person. You might already be aware of that, but it took me a while, when I first started working with Legacy, to comprehend the big distinction. The other thing I'm curious about, though, is why you would want to place a bunch of details in any master source that contain separate items for date of birth, place of birth, name, father, mother, etc. all lumped into the one master source, if I understood you correctly. My opinion is that duplicate information that is already a part of the record need not be repeated - for example, why repeat a person's name in the source detail unless it is a different name, in which case you would place that event as an Also Known As (Alias) name and indicate the source for that different name. Obviously, you must have a reason for doing what you are doing, but if you lump all that information under one master source, then really and truly, it does belong under the unspecified category. Just my thoughts, Jerry Boor / http://www.MerriamFamilyTree.org/ On 8/3/2011 6:37 PM, Joan Kemp wrote: Many thanks for this, but two points; How do I create a template?
