RE: [LegacyUG] Source Name Filing System

2011-09-04 Thread Alan Pereira
I have always kept Census details where possible on the Parents Marriage notes
when the family is together with the parents. If not then on their general
notes if not married.

I apply a general source associated with that census to life events for the
individuals (occupation + location if working otherwise just residence)
assigning the census source to those events and saying in the census detail
whether the census is in the marriage notes (parents) marriage notes of parents
(children) or general notes if not with the family.

I use the Basic Source as that will transport via GEDCOM format to any other
genealogy package.

I used this process in Family Tree maker before I migrated to Legacy without
any problems - I also migrate back to FTM via GEDCOM to check on any migration
issues as I have both packages.

 of
related families. This loss seems to be indicated by the finding of
nulls during a Legacy maintenance check / repair.

I have been assured that Legacy is fully compatible with Windows 7 64 bit
but found that for me this was not the case even though, as recommended, I
had User Account Control set to the lowest level.

The solution for me was to open Legacy in Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)
mode and also run with the Privilege Level checked to run as an
 Administrator.

For the last 2 days, having added about 8 people and about 100 life
 events,
I have not had any issues.

Seems to me that the quickest way to solve this problem in to move all your
photos into the exact same folder structure as your old computer. Legacy
doesn't care if it is a new computer, it only cares about the path it has

2011-09-04 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
This reply is in fact meant to help all of you with these various issues. So
please read and take to heart an earnest attempt to resolve your issues.

I have 4 computers using Windows 7 (one of those is a 64-bit system. My
database contains over 400,000 individuals and over 6,000 pictures)

When you install Legacy you can install it in any directory you want..(ie,
C:\Legacy7\)
All the files in the default folders as they were in Windows XP and
everything in Legacy will function.

I add, copy, move, backup, paste, rename, and all basic functions from one
to another (although you will have to copy to a public folder then move to
the actual folder)

I use dropbox for backup...not for database. But, I have on hundreds of
occasions restored from these backups in dropbox to offsite computers at
work, etc. I have never lost data, pictures, link to pictures, had errors
writing to log files...

Legacy is stable...and the testing methods are not perfect...but, if
everyone does backups daily you may never have totally messed up data.

I am rambling, but all is with good intent...please contact me off list I
will try to guide you. Henry hpete...@cox.net

Best of Luck

I can't speak for all Sourewriter events but I raised this issue with Legacy
When creating an email source using Sourcewriter and subsequently exporting the
file as a GEDCOM, the Title of the source gets dropped for the words which come
after the expression [(E-ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE),]. The Title gets referred
to as ABBR in the GEDCOM and is not imported as the source Title into any
other software.
What's even worse, is that the ABBR field gets contacenated with the Comments
field by some software, effectively making the source unintelligible.
After that experience and the response from Legacy I avoid Sourcewriter:-
If preservation of the source info when transferring between Legacy and
another program is important to you then you will need to use the Basic Source
System. The GEDCOM standard does not support the output of source data with the
detail required by the SourceWriter System.

whether the census is in the marriage notes (parents) marriage notes of
parents (children) or general notes if not with the family.

I use the Basic Source as that will transport via GEDCOM format to any other
 genealogy package.

I used this process in Family Tree maker before I migrated to Legacy without
any problems - I also migrate back to FTM via GEDCOM to check on any
migration issues as I have both packages.

For what its worth, I now keep a copy of everything relevant to a particular
person under the research tab for that person.

Marriage info goes on both parties' pages.

Census info likewise, eg the census info below will be available from
Thomas', Eliza's Emily's pages, with the individual highlighted

 1861 census - RG9; Piece: 688; Folio: 32; Page: 34;
 Kings Somborne, Hants
Thomas H. Smith 46 Registration clerk Relieving Officer, b King's
 Sombourne
Eliza A. Smith 55, Wife, b. King's Sombourne - bold because this is on
Eliza's page her details are highlighted.
Emily M. Smith, dau, 14, Scholar, b Kings Somborne, Hants

I have developed a template for summarising wills include a will summary
 whenever relevant.

This way I can easily access all the info about one person, and also see
links easily. I keep a note also of photos other source info.

You may regard this as a 'lumper' solution, but its worked for me over many
 years.

 All the best

This question is for those of you who organize your folders by surname, not
 by document type.

How have you filed your census images/transcriptions/data? I have cases
where not only do two brothers (same surname) live near enough to be on the
same page, but also where several families that are related (if not at the
time of that census, then later when one's son married another's daughter)
are on the same page (different surnames).

Do you keep a copy of each in each family's folder?

I'm about to start an organization project and would welcome your quick

Chick,

That is basically correct. In actual fact the GEDCOM spec is so old that it
can only recognise very basic sourcing. As a consequence in the current and
recent versions of FTM the same problem arises with its new sourcing.

Hi Terry,

I've tried this several times, but get stuck trying to 'filter by group'

I get the error message 'C:Documents and Settings\db2admin\my
documents\Genealogy\locationTamer\sample.fdb' is not a valid path. Make
sure that the path is spelled correctly and that you are connected to
the server on which the file resides.

Your file 'Lincolntest' is in the directory C:\LocationTamer, as is my
file Joan2010.fdb - which is the file I wanted to play with.
There is no file 'sample.fdb'

I think the problem is that I need a valid file - either
'Lincolntest.fdb' or' Joan2010.fdb' as the object for LocationTamer to
work on - it's looking for 'sample.fdb', which doesn't exist, but how do
you change the file which LocationTamer is operating on? (eg from
'sample.fdb to 'joan2010.fdb')

Sorry I can't get it to work straight off.

I suppose that I can just unlink and relink, but I have no idea what caused

Check/Repair multiple times until no errors appear.

Any ideas?

I would suggest you use the Publisher and select each person you want as a
chronology report and then you will generate a total report that has each
person's chronology with a table of contents, page numbering, Index of
people Places.

You can then save as a PDF file or print this report.

Since Legacy uses MS Access as a back-end I decided to add a form and some
code to do what I have always felt all genealogy software should do. I would
like someone to vet this work before I submit it to Legacy as a suggested
enhancement. Please let me know if you are interested.

Here's a few things this form does:

 Displays all location data. (

 )
Show all events tied to a location (
 http://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/Screen2.jpghttp://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/Screen4.jpg
 )
List all child locations in a parent (All cities in a county) (
 http://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/Screen3.jpghttp://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/Screen4.jpg
 )
Browse to google maps for each location (
 http://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/Screen4.jpg)

I have made a user guide, of sorts:
 http://electricfoster.info/SourceDocs/LocationTamer/LocationTamer.pdf

These features, coupled with the ability to quickly edit and standardize
locations in a database, are essential to me. I'm just so happy I can make
it work in Legacy. I thought I would share.

You will need to know how to import a form and a VBA module into an Access
database in order to use this.

Please don't attempt this unless you know your way around an Access
database and please, always back up your data before trying something like
this. I just may not be as good as I think I am!

 Terry

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] location Tamer

2011-09-04 Thread Terry Foster
Joan,

I took a look at the app tonight and I didn't make the mistake I thought I
had made. (File this under: I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.)

Are you running the MS Access version or the runtime version of the Location
Tamer app?

If you are running the MS Access version, you may see a warning about
possibly unsafe macros or code when you first launch the app. You MUST
enable the active content for the app to work. You have my
solemn guarantee that I have not written any malicious code in the app.

After re-reading the e-mail you sent it looks like you are trying to look at
the tables in the database itself before the application has had the
opportunity to link the tables.

If it is the runtime app you are using, I'll need to scratch my head some
more.

 Joan,

Could you rename the LincolnTest db to sample, mdb? I think I made a rookie
mistake. I will permanent fix it tonight.

  Hi Terry,

I've tried this several times, but get stuck trying to 'filter by group'

I get the error message 'C:Documents and Settings\db2admin\my

sure that the path is spelled correctly and that you are connected to
the server on which the file resides.
