Re: [LegacyUG] iPad 2 and Legacy
Mike: *Everyone needs* an iPad. I have the older model with Families/Legacy installed and don't imagine it would be much different on the iPad2. The Families app goes on your iPad and there's a free program that you download to your PC (Families Sync) that converts your Legacy file to a format that can then be synced with the iPad. I had difficulties with it at first, but I'm bad at computers so not a true example. The greatest benefit to having Legacy on an iPad is portability. I expected to use it for cleaning up source citations and locations but find that isn't practical for me. Legacy looks a little different on the iPad and doesn't have all the features as on a PC. As one example, you can't do a show list with locations so you don't know who you might be changing from Massachusetts, United States to Massachusetts Bay Colony or vice versa. As a result, I don't do any data entry on the iPad but if I'm surfing and find a reference to a family of interest it's wonderful to be able to check and see if I already have the data. If not, I copy/paste the text into a note along with the link and enter the properly formatted citation on my PC when I get home. Families seems to work very well, it's certainly inexpensive enough, and I love having my Legacy database wherever I go without lugging along binders and paper reports. Re: [LegacyUG] Help - How to annotate changes I make?
I am about to use it to add on my research that I did for her, but before I do so, does anyone know how to annotate any changes that I make to the file with my name, purely to separate it from her own work? There are a couple of ways of doing this, or something very similar. Firstly, when you import a gedcom you are given the option to Autosource. This way you can create a Master Source to be assigned to all the records which you import. If you haven't yet done anything with your newly-created file you might want to go back and start again, using Ausosource. Secondly, you could add a Master Source to the Unspecified field (top of the list on the Assigned Source screen for each Individual that *you* add to the database to indicate that these were the result of your research. It may be that you want to add more information to individuals imported from the original gedcom and mark this as your own research. In that case, you could use the Comment field of the Master Source or Source Details for each Source that you cite. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Hello All, Along the same lines, the burial address is occassionally not saving either. Seems at random, I will add the name of the cemetery and where it's located, save it, the 'plus' sign lights up as if something's there, go to open it again and a 'n/a' appears. Just thought someone may like a 'heads-up'. [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess
Hi everyone- I would like to ask a few questions, if you don't mind. I have been using FTM for years. Love to do research but until I purchased FTM, did not know what to do with all the information that I collected. When I started entering info, alot of it has not been entered correctly. My sources are not entered correctly and all of my individuals are tied together, no seperate files for each family. One large file. I feel that I need to change programs because I just purchased a new laptop and it is running on Win 7 64 bit and the FTM version that I have is not compatible, and it seems like each new upgrade with FTM, it just gets worse. Also, I have failed to keep reference logs on my research for each family. My questions are. 1. Should I convert my file using GEDCOM files, or, because things are in such a mess, should I just install Legacy and basicly start over? Copying my information, but at the same time completing the sources, research logs, etc that needs to be done. 2. Number system. If I do convert, how does Legacy handle the RIN numbering system? I am assuming it will automatically assign numbers when the file is downloaded. Since my files are not in a numbered system, I need to redo those anyway. I would like to scan what I can to digital, but I will still need to file originals. I am going to further my knowledge by taking courses and at least getting certified, so have even thought that I should just take some courses on organizing my work first before I state to transfer my files. Thank you for any help that you can give me. I appreciate all that you can do. RE: [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess
Before you do any real switching, download the Free version of Legacy, and then try and import directly from the FTM file. When you make a GEDCOM you will lose all of your “media” and will not be able to get some of it back, unless it is ALL on your machine and you know which media file name goes where. Run your data using most of the reports that Legacy has, do searches and other actions that you currently do in FTM. Do they work as needed and etc. I run 3 different programs two of which are FTM and Legacy, all 3 have issues, some the same but some have distinct ones. DO NOT give up one just because you are having issues and that you did NOT do things the way they should have been done. By importing to a new program, will NOT solve any of your issues that you caused. By the way I have 5 different versions of FTM running on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. If one does not keep up to date on any Family Research program they will have issues with most of the newer OS’s. RE: [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess
Vicki, I think you will like Legacy. I too converted from FTM to Legacy as my main database, although I do use FTM as a secondary program. Before you decide to do things manually, I would create a GEDCOM from FTM (need to be careful with the export options) and import it into Legacy. Then review the file and see what it looks like. If it's workable, take it from there. Only if it's a real mess would I consider starting over. You risk nothing bt trying the GEDCOM first, you can always abandon the file if it doesn't work out. With respect to the single file, I would encourage you to keep it that way. Although others on this list feel differently, I feel that 'splitting out' various trees is something that can be done in reports (and occasionally custom exports) rather than in the family file itself. Legacy has a 'tree finder' (View menu) which lists the various 'islands' of related people. RE: [LegacyUG] Working with Legacy 7.5 on Windows XP and Win 7 64 bit
Vicki, I’ve never done it, so I'm not absolutely sure but I would guess that if the drive has the same 'drive letter' (e.g. H:) on both systems so that Legacy uses the same path to the data file on both systems, it might work. The alternative is using some sort of file synchronization tool. There was a thread about Dropbox on this list in the last few days that you can find in the archives, but there are others available too. Re: [LegacyUG] Working with Legacy 7.5 on Windows XP and Win 7 64 bit
Until earlier this year, I operated that way using dropbox as my hard drive. My laptop is running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit and my old desktop was on XP. The desktop crashed earlier this year giving me a great excuse to buy a new toy. Now, the laptop is the same and the desktop is on Windows 7 Home 64-bit. I routinely move back and forth between the two without issue still using drop box as my hard drive. If anything, the only issue I see with an external hard drive is that when plugged in, the drive letter it's assigned may not always be the same due to some other device being plugged in that may not always be there (i.e. flash drive, smart phone, etc). This is not really a Legacy issue, just something to be aware of that could cause confusion. Otherwise, you should be fine. I keep no files on the computer, all on external hard drives. Legacy works for me without issue. I also keep a copy in the Magic Briefcase folder of Sugar Sync. Say the external drive is G. The path is G:\Legacy\Data. If the computers are networked the path doesn't change from computer to computer. David, Legacy cannot import directly from an FTM file so the user has to export the data from FTM as a GEDCOM and import the data into Legacy from that. Re: [LegacyUG] iPad 2 and Legacy
I just bought a netbook, and it DOES run Legacy. Not sure what I am missing that an IPad would give me. Vicki LeMere Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess Vicki I guess the answer is based on how much of a mess your FTM database is in! I used the gedcom route when I converted from FTM shortly after I purchased FTM2008 and found it to be a major step backward from the FTM2005 that I was using. I had problems on a number of counts as FTM lends itself to serious abuse e.g It lets you put Residence locations in the description field and basically any type of date format you could wish for in date fields. (the latter is not handled well via the gedcom route). Ask yourself the question. Do I need to go through every record to make sure I have assigned events and sources correctly? If the answer is yes, then use your old FTM file as a guide when entering the data correctly into Legacy. Tip, start with yourself as you can then assign your immediate family as your home page. RINS will auomatically be assigned as you add people. Incidentally I have found FTM2005, FTM2008 9 to run under Windows 7 64 bit. Alan Subject: [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess Hi everyone- I would like to ask a few questions, if you don't mind. This is more an annoyance rather than an actual problem, but nevertheless, something that needs to be corrected. Using SourceWriter templates. I don't know if this applies to Basic stuff. Create a Master Source item such as for the 1871 Census of Jersey in the Channel Islands where the medium is Online Images. a) Select Census Records b) Select the country Channel Islands c) Select the year 1871 census d) Select the medium Online images Now, go to step 2, fill in the relevant information on the Source Info tab, and Save the Master Source entry. Then, open the Source Clipboard, don't clear it and click on Step 1 to select the master source to be cited, and select the one just created. Now, put the cursor in the Location Details field. For some reason, the greyed-out prompt information doesn't always clear and you wind up with more information than you wanted in this field. Someone else has also advised me to try the GEDCOM export. You made mention to be careful with the export options. Can you be more specific? My other respondor pointed out that the media would not transfer. Vicki LeMere Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Considering Switching from FTM to Legacy 7.5 Deluxe-Old file a mess Vicki, I think you will like Legacy. RE: [LegacyUG] Artifact vs Recorded Legal Certificates
Hi Marianne, The marriage certificate was of her own marriage, and at this point I can only assume (which I don't like do) that she and her husband received it from the same place they were married. The photocopy that I received from the County Clerk's Office appears to be identical as to her own marriage certificate, however, I would like to record each as separate source. Additionally, there were other birth and marriage certificates for her mother and father (both now deceased) and I have not had the opportunity to verify the information in those certificates with those of the County Clerk or State Vital Statistics Office. The confusing issue for the privately held certificates is that the Legacy SourceWriter Template only allows for Marriage Records, 1) Found in Church Records, or 2) Found in Governmental Records, and 3) Frakturs which does not apply to any of the certificates supplied by the individual, however, it does apply to the photocopy that I received from the County Clerks Office. Hope this is a little clearer, Charles -Original Message- From: mbstx [mailto:msz...@mindspring.com] Sent: Thursday, October 27, 2011 5:50 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Artifact vs Recorded Legal Certificates From whom did you obtain the privately held marriage record, and is it an exact copy of say, a marriage license or a church marriage for the couple? [LegacyUG] Roots 111 to Legacy?
Hi, I was asked a question today to which I could not assist!!! (what's new!) A friend who has legacy 7.5. installed still has Roots 3 installed on another computer and has made a GEDCOM of the Roots 3 family file, then loaded it into Legacy - all went well - so far! On checking the Legacy family file they found that where they had entered Sources - which could have been anywhere in Roots3, as the program did not have a special Source field - (I remember putting my sources, such as they were in those days, in the Notes section.) So could any one give me some idea where Legacy may have entered these Roots3 Sources? As they do not seem to appear in General Notes. I have a copy of GENviewer, so I opened up a copy of the file. But I am none the wiser!!! Have no idea how to work the program. BUT I did see an 'S' beside one of the names and the help file said the Source is 'displayed in the bottom right of the tab' Bottom right little window which has Sources at the top and then a 1) under BUT no mention of any typing. There is not one source in the file. BUT when I open the GEDCOM in Notepad - there are 1631 entries - All looking like this: 0 @S1631@ SOUR Birth cert no. etc. (the numbers are in numerical order) I then unpacked the GEDCOM into Legacy and checked the Sources icon and there are only 3 entries with just the name Source - no explanations of what they are or where they are or who they belong to. SO where have all the sources gone to All very strange! Re: [LegacyUG] iPad 2 and Legacy
You would have to have some kind of limitations like this because Legacy is based on Microsoft Access. There is no Apple that will work with Access. You have to get into the PC part of newer Apple products to use any Access based product. I'm not that techie to explain it any better, but that is the gist of it. God bless, Ellen - Original Message - From: Kirsten Bowman vik...@rvi.net To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thursday, October 27, 2011 2:46:31 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] iPad 2 and Legacy Mike: *Everyone needs* an iPad.
