[LegacyUG] Fwd: Greetings from new user group member and a question

Would definitely appreciate feedback on a question I have. I downloaded a gedcom from my ancestry.com family tree and imported it into legacy. My question is: Can I add the updated ancestry.com information to my present legacy tree without losing any of the information already added to the legacy tree (to do lists, repositories, etc)? Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Information
If you enter the information as a Burial Address, typically the address of the cemetery, you can add notes to that address then, by linking the address to everyone who is buried at that address you will be linking the address and the associated notes at the same time. If you want to record a plot number or something similar for each burial in the cemetery then you would have to manually enter that as a burial note separate from the burial address. Re: [LegacyUG] Special Characters
Legacy can only support Western European fonts. If this character is not in the Windows Character Map for Western European characters, then Legacy can't use it. Doing a little digging around, I found that some of the Hawaiian characters are Unicode fonts, which Legacy doesn't support at this time, but we do plan on porting Legacy over to a programming language which supports thse fonts. I don't know how soon this will be. My feedback is DON'T ever merge someone elses information with yours. Anything you haven't researched is open for big trouble. If you keep it in a separate file you won't go wrong, use the import to give you hints and places to find the information your self. *Emphasis: *Can I add the updated ancestry.com information to my present legacy tree without losing any of the information already added to the legacy tree (to do lists, repositories, etc)? * Yes. But the risk you have is you might have your family file just the way you want it. If you import a Gedcom, it can change the way you like to enter things. Example. If you import a Gedcom with a lot of prefixes such as Mr. Dr. Rev. in the name, but you prefer prefixes to go in the prefix field. You would then have to check everyone to get them to your style. A better way, I think, is to import the Gedcom into a file by itself first. Change everything to what you personally prefer. After you get it to your liking, then import that into your main file. This is what I do- often the file I am importing will have locations formatted differently, and I like to change them to my favorite format before importing. Welcome aboard. Don't hesitate to ask us anything you have questions about. **Thank you. **Robert* *Genealogy without documentation is mythology! RE: [LegacyUG] Special Characters
Georgia, this is not only your problem but one of Legacy. There isn't a possibility to add any character to Legacy except to those you can see in the Options - Customise - Data Defaults - Quick Data Entry Ribbon Like you and many others having ancestors in Europe and they can't use special letters to write names correctly. The problem is, that Legacy isn't using the so called UNICODE. As I don't know how your letter looks like I can't say anything about if it's possible to use that letter. Even if Legacy would support UNICODE there is still the problem that the character you need isn't supported. Could you send an example of the letter you need as that would be a great help to help you. Bernhard, Thank you for your thoughts. The letter is simply an a with an overscore, also used in the Maori language. However, the name can still be spelled with just an a. I actually have faith that Legacy will eventually support Unicode. In the meantime, I have much work and research to keep me from fretting about it. [LegacyUG] Quarter Dates
I use a registration event and put something like Sep 1841 in the date field. The full sentence reads: [HisHer] birth was registered during the quarter ended [Date] at the [~Place], with GRO reference [Desc] [Notes].[Sources] I put something like vol 2b, page 234 in the Desc field and only use the notes for clarifying any uncertainties. I have special locations xx Registration District only used for registrations so I can separate people registered in Sheffield Registration District from people born in Sheffield, for example. In the birth field I just insert a date equal to the registration year, unless the registration was in the first quarter, when I use Abt . I have asked Legacy for a change to the Sentence definitions so we could use: [DateQuarter] which would take a date in the form Dec 1854 and expand to the December Quarter 1854 [~DateQuarter] which would expand the date to the Dec Quarter 1854 [DateQ] which would expand the date to 4Q 1854 However, I'm not holding my breath. Mr Anderson. She had 1 child with #1, 4 children with #2 and 0 children with #3. When I run a descendants Chart for Agnes or her ancestors, Unknown and Mr Anderson are listed but there is no Mr Carter (or children). Mr Carter is not private and is set to preferred. Running the same report from Mr Carter or his parent's perspective has Agnes and children included. The Chronology for Agnes lists Mr Carter and their children. I had a look through the help files and archives without hitting anything to fit. What do you think I might have set or unset to cause spouse #2 not to appear? If I need to I will delete and recreate him. Hopefully there is a quicker solution. Season greetings and thank you in advance Olwyn L Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
