With all due respect, I know that the list administrator made the

really necessary to send messages with a colored background?  This is

Keith,

You do not say what type of web pages you wish to create, although since you
have a one-name study I would suspect that it is either Individual or Family.
However, the principle is pretty much the same for all. If using CSS then
either all the CSS or the Link will have to be included in the appropriate page
on every web page.

For Pedigree pages the easiest way is to use LTools Delux ($10) HTML option,
for the others there is software available to help. This list is not
appropriate for discussions on coding but WUL will be able to help at

I can obviously do it by editing the HTML but with 1470 pages that would take

I can’t find an option to set the font in the Web Creation options so is there

But if you are writing down the pronunciation instruction you really
need to use a recognized phonetic system. Your example, "oo as in book"
would have been pronounced differently by an aunt of mine to the way I
say it. She would have said it with the oo sound as in stool, with the
lips pushed forward, whereas I say it with a much shorter oo sound with
less lip movement.

RE: [LegacyUG] Surname pronunciation

2012-01-22 Thread Charles Apple
Richard,

Names evolve considerably over generations, depending on dialects, countries of
origin, countries of destination, languages used, and many other factors. I
don't believe there is one easy answer, although, there may be many opinion's
on why it should be done a particular way. Personally, I prefer a method
similar to transcription i.e. "record information as found in the records." In
other words, how did the people who had those surnames pronounce them at that
time in history, and what is the particular country and language of origin in
which they spoke. The two examples that you cite "Noel" and "Barron"
linguistically and etymologically originated in the Old French language, and
being familiar with French both surnames have a definite "Nasal" quality or
tone to them. However, having said that, both surnames could possibly be traced
back prior to the Norman conquest of 1066, and on into Latin variants.

For example, my surname is "Apple" and the surname originated in Germany. Even
between dialects in Germany, I have found approximately 40 different variant
spellings and pronunciations among the German people. When my ancestors came to
the United Sates, their surname was recorded "Phonetically" so again, in the
English language there are approximately 35 variant spellings and
pronunciations. I don't believe there is one single best answer to your
question, nor do I believe there is a dictionary or lexicon that can provide an
adequate answer. Perhaps, in a particular time, place, language, and country,
however, beyond that the surname evolves into different spellings and
pronunciations.

As previously stated, I prefer to record the name as it was spelled and
pronounced at the time, language, and country in which it was used.

sounding differently due to the dialect spoken at that time in that area.

Richard,

I think you started a topic which is very difficult and no one on this list is
capable to solve this whithout hearing how it is spoken.

The way names a pronounced is very different depending on the language spoken.
Having families in an boarder area does not make it easier.

In English they write SCHOOL
And they speak it SKOOL.

Recording names from other languages is vey difficult. The AKA is a very good
possibiliy.

The best is have a voice record of the person while saying the name.

But who has this. The least of us.

Looking at your descendant surnames they could be of German origin.
People living near the boarder of Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands.

That is only an idea.

Have you looked at a good dictionary? They very often have pronunciation guides

Car - kneel, and they have it!

Have you looked at a good dictionary? They very often have pronunciation guides

fonts. You may get some clues from the likes of Websters(?) or my personal

Re: [LegacyUG] Timelines available

2012-01-22 Thread Bert van Kootwijk
>From the help one of the many items about Timelines:

Creating Timeline Files

Legacy comes with several timelines that can be included in your Timeline
and Chronology reports. You can also create your own timelines to use in
these reports and to share with other people.

And remember, these timeline should be about fairly well known events in
history. Events that would have had an impact on many of the people in the
area. These are the types of background and historical information that
people will want to include in their own personal timelines and

chronologies.

To create a new timeline file:

1. From the View menu, choose Timeline Files. The Timeline Files screen
appears. (See Timeline Files for more information about this screen.)

2. Click the New button. The Create New Timeline File screen appears.

3. Enter a description of the timeline. This is the description that will
appear in the Timeline File List when users are selecting which timeline to
use.

4. Click Save. The New Timeline Name screen appears. (See Timeline
Description for more information.)

5. Enter a file name for the timeline file and click OK. You are returned
to the Timeline Files screen with your new timeline added to the list.

6. With the new timeline highlighted, click Edit. This brings up the
Timeline Editor screen. (See Timeline Editor for more information about the
options on this screen.)

7. To add an event to the timeline, click the Add button. This brings up
the Edit Timeline Entry screen. (See Edit Timeline Entry for more
information.)

8. Enter the event range. There should be a starting and ending date. If
an event was just a one-time occurrence, enter the same date into both
fields.

9. Enter a Short Description. This is what shows on most reports. Make
sure this description makes sense to the user when he/she sees it all by
itself. For example, if you are making a timeline for the kings of Denmark,
don't just put a name in the Short Description. The user won't know what it
means. Put something like: Gorm the Old became the first king of Denmark.
Or, Gorm the Old, 1st King of Denmark.

10. Enter a Long Description if you have one. For example: Gorm the Old,
born about 840 becomes the 1st King of Denmark. His father was Hardecanute
Sigurdsen. He married Thyri Klacksdottir.

11. Enter the Source of the information, if you know it.

12. When you are done, click Save. This returns you to the Timeline Editor
screen.

13. Repeat steps 7 through 12 for each new entry into the timeline.

14. When you have finished adding new events, click OK to return to the
Timeline Files.

The timeline files are saved in the TimeLines folder under the Legacy
folder. You are encouraged to send your timelines to Millennia so that we
can post them on our web site for others to use.

In the Timelines folder inside the Legacy folder, you'll find those that are
installed with the program, organised by language. As you'll discover, they're
just plain text files, one record per entry in the timeline together with a
specific header record. Look at one with Notepad and you'll soon get the idea.

As to using info from somewhere else...? That's up to you. The file format is
largely a devising for Legacy, I think. So you probably won't be able to mix and
match.

The Help file has several topics relating to timelines. Simply type Timeline in
the keyword box of the Index pane, and work your way through what it lists.

Further updates will find those locations just fine. If Legacy gives you

Agreed. But the search as currently configured, relies on the fact there there
is some form of structure applied to the data. As I say, it shouldn't be termed
a "Find" but a "Filter".

The "Find:" field is actually mislabelled in my view. Changing it to "Filter:"

Re: [LegacyUG] Location master list

2012-01-22 Thread Ron Taylor
The location fields throughout Legacy allow free-form text...meaning you can
put whatever you wish in them.  Some formatting is recommended but as you may
have noticed, they are used in many different ways.  Others have described ways
to search inside the Master Locations List based on the sort order, etc.  The
"Find:" field does not allow for wild card searches in the current version of
Legacy so the results you get as you enter text into that field is what is
found based on the sort order.

Another way to search for a piece of a location field, is to use the tool-bar
"Search" and then "Detailed Search" and in the "Where to look" field select a
field name like "Birth Place".  Then in "How to look" select "Contains" and
then in "What to look for" enter the search string.  Click on "Clear List
before this search" and then click "Create List".  Repeat this process for each
field as needed.  Some wild card search capabilities are possible as outlined
in the help file.

Another method outside of Legacy is the "Global Text Search" that is in Ltools
where you can search all tables and all fields for a text string.

It would be great if "wild card" searches were enabled in all the search boxes
within Legacy so that you could enter a text string "*Calif*" and see a sub-set
of the table that contains all entries with that wild card string.  The
"Detailed Search" mentioned above can do some wild card searching and
instruction for it is in the help file under "wildcard".

RE: [LegacyUG] England Places

2012-01-22 Thread Peter HOLMES
Jerry,

There are currently a few exceptions to that though!

There is at least one in England that is often reasonably correctly referred
to as County Durham. Some Irish counties are often prefixed by the word
County as well.

Not all counties have the suffix "shire" as part of their name (such as
Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent, Sussex).

However, in 18th century & earlier England some counties (eg; Lincolnshire)
were known by the prefix only even in official records such as the census.

In 1974 a lot of long established counties underwent a name change to
reflect administrative areas. I can't explain it well to you as I migrated
in 1971 from England to Western Australia (WA), but it is probably
searchable through Google!

Correctly stating county, province and state names is very important to
people outside the state etc., of the writer & to minimise confusion
abbreviations should - in my opinion - NOT be used in communications that go
outside the writer's national boundaries. For example, what does RI mean at
the end of Ron B's message? Could be very confusing to someone in say India
that is not aware of US postal authorities abbreviations. Likewise, I make
sure in all of my genealogical emails I will not refer to Western Australia
as << WA >> for fear that someone thinks I'm referring to the state in USA
whose name escapes me at the moment.

There are other places in the world of email other than USA.

Peter Holmes
Western Australia. Skype ; p.g.holmes

Sorry Ron, but I thought it was pretty subtle and I like the contrast.
But I just un-checked the box to compose in html. Did it still come
across with the colored background? And thanks - the other Ron - for
that answer - so looks like I should just use Yorkshire, not Yorkshire
County, if I understood you correctly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location master list

2012-01-22 Thread Ron Ferguson
Carol,

As far as I know the only way to search for a location using the search box at
the top of the screen is to search from left to right using the layout select.
I have my list sorted to read from right to left – so I would enter, England,
Lancashire, Eccles, Victoria Street to find Victoria Street.

Why Legacy doesn’t enable one to search on any word I cannot imagine, it is a
very easy change to make and I would suggest that you enter it as an
enhancement (see under the Legacy tab – ‘suggest a new feature’)

Hi, firstly thanks to everyone who responded with my earlier problems.
Hopefully the install/saving data etc is now resolved.

This morning I was searching some on-line records when I saw a street address
(Victorian London's east end) that looked familiar and so I went to Location
Master List and entered the street name. It came up empty but I was sure that I
had it in my file so I scrolled down the list. It was there. I had only entered
the street, not the house number as I wasn't looking for a particular house.
The list showed the full address. Am I entering the information incorrrectly
under 'addresses', or should just putting in the street name have shown a
result?

RE: [LegacyUG] Correct file path for media

Tony

I agree.

I ignore the Legacy instructions and install in Program Files. I have used
Legacy for 8 years with copies of my data on TNG, a netbook and various PDAs
and smartphones and never had problems with where data is stored.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Correct file path for media

First, let me clarify my previous post. I install Legacy into the C:\Legacy
folder and that's the last time I touch that folder. All data related to my
family history research is in D:\Genealogy sub-folders.

Having said that, I'm baffled (and always have been) as to why the original
designers of Legacy chose to completely ignore the standard which says that
executable code goes in one of the Program Files folders, Application data
goes into the AppData folders and user data goes wherever the user wants to
put it.

I have well over 100 installed programs on my machine and every one of them
follows that convention, including LTools and Gensmarts. Except Legacy.

Only Legacy ignores this and only Legacy has issues with where data are
stored.

Please fix this in version 8.

Tony

[LegacyUG] [OT] How To Use The Help Viewer

2012-01-22 Thread Mike Fry
Hi People,

For those that are interested and are desirous of knowledge, I have uploaded a
small HTML Help File to Google. The file is named ViewHelp.CHM and is quite
small (about 57kb). It was originally sourced from Microsoft and largely
untouched by me. It describes how use that infernal Help Viewer that the Legacy
Help file is displayed in.

Of particular interest should be the extensive information on using the Search
tab.

The link to the file, should you want to download it and take a look, is

Being a Help File author myself, albeit on a much smaller scale, I think I can
partly answer that. When the Legacy7.chm file is created, the author gets the
option to create various Panel within the view panel: Contents, Index, Search
and Favourites.

The Contents panel is, for some reason that escapes me, not used in Legacy. This
should present a list of the topics in the file, in the form of a Table of
Contents found in a book. This should definitely be introduced and replace the
pitiful Legacy Help Contents topic that comes up as default topic when the file
is first opened.

The Index Panel is derived from those words in the file that the author thinks
merit the ability to be found. Not all words get into the index. The author has
some control over what goes into the index. continuing the analogy, this is to
be thought of like the index normally found at the back of a book.

The content of the Favourites panel is derived from you own input. Here you can
create a list of those topics that you use most often.

And then there's the Search panel, which has been discussed fairly recently. I
have available, a small Help file from Microsoft that is concerned only with how
to use the Search facility. I think I'll put the file onto my website and post
the url here if that's all right with people. If not, a private message to me
might result in a direct mailing of the file. Don't expect an immediate
response, I'd like to send the file to multiple people once or twice, rather
than multiple times to individuals.
