Re: [LegacyUG] Race

2012-07-05 Thread hwedhlor
It is my impression (and that of the majority of Western
biological and anthropological researchers) that
biologically there is but a single human race. All the other
"racial" terms are sociocultural constructs. With the advent
of frequent travel between continents, and the resultant
interbreeding of previously isolated populations, the
differences of hair texture, eye shape, nose shape, etc. can
no longer be used to identify recent geographical, or even
ethnic origins.

Having said that I must add that possible "racial" origin is
certainly significant to the genealogical researcher as it
gives us a clue about where to look for records and
relatives. Assuming genealogical research is eventually
taken to its logical conclusion all genealogists will
ultimately be searching for matching DNA somewhere in
Africa. :-)

That is great.  Only problem I have now is the limit is 200 inches in width and
the chart I have created is over 33 feet long.  How can I reduce the over all

Michele,

As Jenny said, create a custom Fact/Event. Please open the Individual's
Information screen. The heading for the section under Birth, Death, etc. is
titled "Events/Facts". You are right, Race and Etnicity are not Events but
they are FACTS.

I could make an event but that would be weird. Your race isn't an event in
your life. For now I am just writing it in the notes so that I know to take
race into consideration when I am searching for records. Since census records
always contain race I am surprised Legacy hasn't added a field for that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Race

2012-07-05 Thread David C Abernathy
Try this

“A race is a biological construct, of a more or less distinct population with
anatomical traits that distinguish it clearly from other races. The anatomical
traits usually refer to the color of the skin, shape of the eyes or the nose.
For example, in India the people in the southern parts are quite different
anatomically from the people in the northern parts, because the people from the
south belong to the Dravidian race and the people from the north belong to the
Aryan race. The three major races of the world are the Caucasian, the Mongoloid
and the Negroid.

Ethnicity refers to the cultural factors of the racial group, especially
religion, food habits, dressing and life style and occupations. Ethnicity
refers to a subset within race. For example not all the Caucasians of the world
follow the same religious or cultural practices.

In short, Race is genetically determined by Nature”

So in today’s World, with so many cross breading of the different Races, what
are the real Races?

>From http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Race

“race “

n.

1. A local geographic or global human population distinguished as a more or
less distinct group by genetically transmitted physical characteristics.

2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common
history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race.

3. A genealogical line; a lineage.

4. Humans considered as a group.

5. Biology

a. An interbreeding, usually geographically isolated population of organisms
differing from other populations of the same species in the frequency of
hereditary traits. A race that has been given formal taxonomic recognition is
known as a subspecies.

b. A breed or strain, as of domestic animals.

6. A distinguishing or characteristic quality, such as the flavor of a wine.

Re: [LegacyUG] Race

2012-07-05 Thread Ron Bernier
David is the second person that has commented on this thread, saying that
people need to be careful not to "confuse" race with nation of origin.
This totally baffles me as to how anyone wouldn't know what the difference
between a person's race and their nation of origin. American and South
African are nationalities. Caucasian is a race. How would someone confuse
the two? Japanese is a nationality. Asian is a race. Again, how do you
confuse the two?

The advantage of using the Events/Facts dialog box for stating important facts,
such as race/nationality, is that it's there as soon as you open that person's
record: no having to remember it or hunt around for it.

I rarely use it except for such important events and/or facts.

I meant to add that you can include the Ethnicity (or whatever)
Fact/Event on the Family View if you so wish, in place of one of the
standard fields.

I choose to show Born, Baptised, Died, Buried and Death Cause, but
Ethnicity would probably be a preferable choice to Death Cause if I had
a lot of people in my tree of varying ethnicities.

You need to be careful not to confuse place of birth and race. I have
friends that were born in and their families lived several generations in Africa
but are Caucasians, and others that are black but lived in Asia. You can
get too caught up in Political Correctness and loose accuracy, as well as
give misleading information.

But it's a "fact" note the list is titled Events/Facts.

Not everything in the census is in Legacy - and don't forget, the census
records from other countries probably have different information than those in
the US. Plus each US census is different.

There aren't fields for schooling, literacy, occupation, etc.

I would say most people abstract everything beyond the vitals into the data
into the Notes, either the Census Source Text field or the Event Notes field.

If you want to submit a Suggestion form, we can pass that on to the programmers.

No problem there. I call the person's race whatever the document says they are
at that time period. In the case of the marriage it would be colored. On his
WWI draft card he was black. I can't find him in the census records so who
knows there.

I would suggest using the term "Ethnicity" as that would cover all backgrounds
besides just Caucasian, African, Asian, etc. Scottish, French, etc would be
covered under ethnicity.

And please don't make the mistake of calling just *any* person of African
descent as "African-American". A black person who was born and raised and
lives in Africa, England or any other country is *not* an "African-American"

RE: [LegacyUG] Race

2012-07-05 Thread Michele Lewis
I could make an event but that would be weird. Your race isn't an event in
your life. For now I am just writing it in the notes so that I know to take
race into consideration when I am searching for records. Since census records
always contain race I am surprised Legacy hasn't added a field for that.

Re: [LegacyUG] Race

2012-07-05 Thread Sherry/Support
I would suggest using the term "Ethnicity" as that would cover all
backgrounds besides just Caucasian, African, Asian, etc. Scottish,
French, etc would be covered under ethnicity.

And please don't make the mistake of calling just *any* person of
African descent as "African-American". A black person who was born
and raised and lives in Africa, England or any other country is *not*
an "African-American"

2012-07-05 Thread Sherry/Support
First, back upo the Family File (File > Backup Family File) and run
FIle > FIle Maintenance > Check/Repair.

Also, your last RIN may be higher than the count because you have
abandoned RINs. You can fix that by going to Tools > Renumber RINs.
That will fill in the missing RINs and your numbers will match.

My Legacy file contains 15,275 names. However, I notice that when I pull
up the name list, the count at the top says 15,274. It also shows 15,274
under general information.

But I can prove the 15,275. When opening FamilySearch, it shows all
15,275. Also, if I download the name list (the one that LFT claims has
15,274 names) to an Excel file, and count the rows, its 15,275. So, it
seems odd that Legacy is subtracting 1 when doing the count.

Anyone see this phenomenon before? Any thoughts on the problem or how to
correct it?

I am still using version 5, and any added characters will go to the

right end, OR in the middle, the desired character will appear where the
curser is, also you can copy and paste the required characters in whatever
order you want (even characters from another source, but only if they are on
the chart). e.g. £ will paste but € (euro) will not

Yes, Colin, you can. But do not forget that you may well not have a complete
transfer of all you settings.

For example Source Writer format will be lost, some privacy settings may be
lost, it is by no means a perfect transfer.

If the OP indicates why this transfer is wanted, maybe more constructive
help can be given.

[LegacyUG] Sentence definitions reset to default...No!!!

2012-07-05 Thread Brian Lehman
Hello All,
Now that I am beginning to write my own sentence definitions, I'm
wondering about something.
When I run the Master List Clean Up, a window opens, asking me "If I
would like to reset all Event Sentences to their default wording?".
In the past, my sentences were default, and I tried to always answer No
to this question, however in my rush at times I answered Yes.
I imagine that would have returned to default any custom sentences I had
written.
Is there a setting to always answer No, to returning event definitions
to their default?
After writing sentence definitions, I wouldn't want to loose them by
accident
I checked the help index, but didn't see a reference.
Thank you for your assistance,
Brian Lehman

Re: [LegacyUG] no Subscription

2012-07-05 Thread Brian/Support
I have not used the subscription form in a while but when we originally
moved to the current list management software there was an
auto-responder that had the user click a link in the reply to validate
their subscription. That had a terrible failure rate because the link
that was sent frequently split over multiple lines and did not work for
some email clients or had an extra space inserted that made the link
invalid for many users.

I do not know if they are still sending out the auto-responses but I
have not seen the complaints about broken links on this list for a long
time. The frequency of the complaints about not receiving emails is much
less than those about broken links.

But there are only 10 save locations, Tim seems to have found a way

Click in the box to position the cursor where you want to insert the
next character.
Double click on a character and it will be inserted in the list at the
cursor location.

Look at the Options button and then the Customise Columns option. There, you'll
discover two further buttons labelled Save and Load. These allow you to save a
particular collection of columns (content and order) for reuse at a later date.

Brian,
Since this subscription issue occurs frequently would it be possible to have an
