What you're looking for is Legacy Virtual Users' Group. Tessa didn't put
a link for it so Google it. I don't have it and would have to look it up
myself.

Re: [LegacyUG] syncing files

2012-10-26 Thread JLB
There has to be an easier way than what you're doing. If it's only one
file that's being changed you can remember it, but if it's more you're
going to get confused, pretty much guaranteed.

If you're using Syncback then you know you can set up backup or sync
profiles. All you need in the middle is an external HD to go from one to
the other.

What NOT to do is work on your desktop and then your laptop without
syncing the files before you change computers.

Another way to go at this is using SugarSync, free 5GB.
(http://www.jgen.ws/sugarsync.php [referral link]) You do have to wait
for the files to sync between computers before you switch computers. And
you also have to trust the cloud.

Re: [LegacyUG] Transcribing

2012-10-26 Thread Marg Strong
I have a couple of docs with difficult script, but there are, so far, a few
that were transcribed and I haven't found access to the newspaper or original
document (yet). So I'm not sure if the news article or the transcriber
mispelled and used incorrect punctuation. It just feels sloppy to me to leave
it that way. It's already in an image form, but I like to also have a
transcription of the image. I would likely be attaching it as the image in the
sources. The transcription if for my own use in narratives and notes. I still
am uneasy about changing the transcriber's worth though.

The same problem is found on Ancestry.com transcriptions. When they are wrong,
because you know it by your research, or, worse, you can see in the image it
was wrongly transcribed, then I'm not as hesitant to correct it.

Re: [LegacyUG] syncing files

2012-10-26 Thread Marg Strong
Since I will be traveling and working on a few documents that will be both in
my laptop and desktop at home, it should work out ok because I can just replace
the older. But today I ended up somehow working on a doc and having part of one
with new notes and part on the laptop with other new notes. I renamed the
laptop file by adding a 2 and consolidated.

I guess that's what I meant rather than syncing: consolidating. Probably not
possible to do except manually. Will just have to be careful to work on docs in
only one pc.

Thanks for the response (I do use SyncbackSE, by the way.

There is no solution currently as far as I am aware. It has been logged as a
problem, but nothing done so far. It is a real pain in the rear end to have to
remember to check it every time. It seems to affect all reports, not just FGS.

itself on the Include tab every time you run an FGS?

Copy what you see always, you can always note what the usual name
spelling is in brackets.

I love a little thing called "Transcribe" which puts the jpg (or other

RE: [LegacyUG] Transcribing

2012-10-26 Thread CE WOOD

I have many, very old and even mediaeval documents, and I always transcribe
exactly what was written because they are primary sources. Spelling was not
standardized even in the American Colonies. My biggest problem is that Legacy
does not support manny of the older letter forms that were used. That's why I
often use PDFs or JPGs instead of transcribing.

Re: [LegacyUG] syncing files

2012-10-26 Thread Ron Ferguson
Peggy,

If you use Dropbox and have files with the same name on both machines then the
latest will be used by both machines.

If you really wish to keep them separate, one thing which you may like to
consider is only having your Legacy generated back ups in Dropbox. These will,
of course be unique because they contain the date and time in their file name.
If, however, you wished to be more specific then there is no reason for not
putting, say, #1 before the PC file name and #2 before that of the laptop.

You will, of course have to use Restore to put them into Legacy, and save with
the appropriate. *.fdb file name, overwriting the old version.

Syncback if you create different backup sets for the different versions.
A bit off topic but it's a direction to try.

Dropbox saves versions going back 30 days but I haven't used it the way
you're suggesting so I don't know for sure.

I'm wondering why you want different versions. "Sync" means that the
latest version prevails on whichever device you're on.

[LegacyUG] syncing files

2012-10-26 Thread Marg Strong
I have been using a sync program to sync all files from my working drive to my
backup drives. Since I use one drive and copy to only backup drives it's worked
well.

But now I have a laptop and will be working on legacy while traveling and it
doesn't seems as though my "chronosync" program will save both the older file
and the newer one that is different. I can't find a way to do that. I haven't
yet delved into drop box. What happens with files of the same name and
different contents? Is there a sync program that will save a copy the way a
program like Adobe Bridge or even microsoft explorer, I think, will save both
files, adding a (1) to the second  copy.

Hoping you can help me figure out how to do this! Thank you, Peggy

[LegacyUG] Transcribing

2012-10-26 Thread Marg Strong
I don't know if "transcribe" is the correct term. I gathered many
photocopies of documents on a recent trip and would like to "transcribe" them
into text files. I've tried Windows Voice Recognition but it takes longer than
typing (though I'm concrned about carpal tunnel ?)).

My question: When you transcribe, do you enter the spelling and grammar errors
in the original or correct the obvious ones? If the document is old, do you use
the old language or update it for modern readers? (adding a note to that
effect)?

Thank you.

@ Daphne, What does write a macro mean?

@ Leon: From reading your post, it sounds like your books follow the Decendant
book format. Have you found this format to have any advantages over the
Ancestor's book format? It may be a matter of preference, but there must be some
sort of criteria to help make this determination.

Pat, You made me chuckle! ;) I don't use the GEDCOM, and most likely will not
allow myself to get in a position where I need to start using it, at least until
the new standard is developed & then incorporated into Legacy. I spend too much
time on my source citations, usually using the templates, to toss it all away in

figure out how best to transport data because one or more of my relatives became
interested in receiving data! I am a lone wolf right now.

Jenny asked:

"Could it also be used where a person, for example, is appointed to a
position and later resigns so we want to record those different dates?"

Yes. There's no reason why that shouldn't work. If you want to put two
dates into a single Legacy event, then there's no reason why you
couldn't. Both dates would be processed by Legacy as dates, so they
would be in standard format. The only issue would be choosing the one
to be the sort key for ordering events. I.e. the one which actually
appears in the Date column of the Event List.

Paula commented:

"Might be nice, but these sorts of one-off things I would handle by just
typing in what I want in either Notes or Over-ride."

The problem with that is where you want multiple locations to appear in
the location list. At the moment the only way to achieve that is to
have one Legacy event for each location. Also, with multiple dates,
only one is recognised by Legacy for each Legacy event.

Re: [LegacyUG] FGS Report

2012-10-26 Thread Leon Chapman
Lavern:

A descendant book vs. ancestor book has been explained in another response,
but here is what I have found.
I have focused my books on 1 to 4 family lines, e.g., Chapman's. In the
case of 1 family line, the book is all about Chapman's and it is very
natural to use the Descendant report (starting with oldest Chapman) as a
primary part of the book.

I also include 6-8 Family group sheets (mostly of immediate living or just
past father, mother, g-father-mother, and gg-father-mother ancestors), but
keeping within the Chapman family. When I run out of pictures (about 3-4
generations) is where I stop the Family Group sheets and other
corresponding chapters. I also include several scrapbook chapters for
living or recent Chapman families -- when you don't have but a few pictures
of the family, then you would not print a picture scrapbook of that
family. So these normally amounts to about 3-4 generations of people.

I include an Ancestor Chart Chapter which starts with the youngest Chapman
person. This is normally about 3-7 pages in length and provides a
nice picture view into ones ancestors in a chart format that most people
can understand.

I will include several chapters of Chronology Reports for major living
family in my line and a few generations back - 3-4 generations.

My Chapman book is 387 pgs including all the indexes (Names, places & Table
of Contents).

I have written another book, about 800 pages, that include 4 major families
using the Mulitple-descendant reports along with all of the others I have
mentioned.

Another chapter that is nice to include is famous ancestors. If you upload
your family (no living people) using a GEDCOM to Ancestry, then Ancestry
can provide a nice trace using their world tree to famous ancestors. You
can create that report in ancestry and copy it into a Word document and add
it to your book by adding XX blank pages for the chapter when Legacy prints
its output report fromt the Publisher.

I have found that most genealogy family books are written as a standard
practice around a specific family, which if you use an Ancestor report,
then you have lots and lots and lots of other families and for most people,
it gets pretty confusing in the middle of the tree. If you really want to
be more complete in one book, you could have a descendant chapter of 1
primary family (Chapman) and include an ancestor chapter of the youngest
Chapman. You still are missing some of the people in your databse even
with this approach.

I am into my 4th book and it will be primarily a multiple-descendant report
book focusing on about 4-5 primary families.

So, it comes down as to what people your want to focus most on in the book
and how you perceive it can be read and interrpreted by a non-genealogists
- your readers / family members which get a copy of your book.

Anyway, there is not a right or wrong way - descendants vs. ancestors --
try a report or two and see which works best for you. You can use the
preview mode for you books and create a pdf file to look at and compare the
different approaches. You may prefer one or the other (descendant or
ancestor report).

I think you will find the best part of your book will be the photo albums
for your living people and a few generations back that includes some old
time pictures back into the 1950's to the mid to late 1800s. You will want
to add these pictures to events for each person or the marriage event if
the picture is a family picture. The effort you put into getting the
pictures into your reports thru events for people and marriages will be
well worth it.

Probalby too much
but, Good luck.

2012-10-26 Thread Richard Falzini
Hello,
I like the option with legacy to be able to create a web page, and I

I do know some basic HTML, and have been able to customize to page to my liking.

What I would like to know as legacy provides updates in the future, do they
plan to make any further advancements to the "create a web page" option?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] FGS Report

2012-10-26 Thread Ron Ferguson
Lavern,

A macro is basically a script which allows one to automate a (repetative)
process.

Regarding your second question, please just think about it, a descendant report
will only show the descendants of a person, an ancestor report will only show
the ancestors of a person. If B is a descendant of A then the ancestors of B
(male and female) are not the same as the child descendants of A.

Re: [LegacyUG] help, with sourcing...

Hi Ian,

The website is EvidenceExplained.com.
I've gone back to get the exact link to Paula's question "How to Use Source
Information given in Ancestry." Here is the link:
https://www.evidenceexplained.com/content/how-use-source-information-given-ancestry

If this doesn't take you to the exact question, you'll need to go to
Forums, then on Search, put in the word Ancestry and it will come up.

I think I am with you on this one, Paula.

I never use the standard Event Sentences but have created my own for
every Event I use. I don't think I ever have to use the Override, but
add any additional information (above what is required for Description,
Date and Place) in the Notes field. I don't find it necessary to make
numerous entries for the same Event.

[LegacyUG] Event sentence redesign

2012-10-26 Thread Tony Rolfe
