RE: [LegacyUG] Split View

2012-12-28 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Hi Sherry,

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas….

I have done a reinstall of Legacy from the website. My problem remains however
it is not how I first thought. It is not the split view that causes Legacy to
freeze. It is the particular family file that I was trying to open that causes
the freeze. My main file works fine and I can open it again in split view but
if I try to open this one particular family file, by itself or in split view,
that seems to cause the freeze.

What do I need to do? I’m running Windows Vista.

I would suggest doing a quick reinstall of Legacy using the latest build from
our website.

If that doesn't help, we'll get back to you on Wednesday g

Run check/repair on the PROBLEM file 2 or 3 times, until there are
absolutely no errors then try split view.

You can run Check Repair from the file Menu without having to open a

To do that close any open file

Re: [LegacyUG] missing multimedia files

2012-12-28 Thread Brian/Support
When Legacy links to a multimedia file it stores the exact path to the
file in your family file.
For example C:Legacy\Pictures\UncleGeorge\aunt_millie.jpg. or
C:\Documents and
Settings\Username\Documents\Pictures\MyFamily\UncleGeorge\aunt_millie.jpg.

Since you have changed computer and have all your multimedia on a new
drive, probably with a different path on that drive you will have to
point Legacy to the correct path(s).

Go to Options Customize Locations
Click the View List of Multimedia Locations button
Select each file path in the list and use the change button
Browse to the new location of that path on the separate drive where your
pictures are now stored.
Click OK to change the recorded file path.

Repeat as needed for all the other paths

That depends on you. You could try simply reinstalling the program in
which case it will simply over-write to the same location and all the
necessary files that the program uses. If that fixes your problem, so
be it. If not, then you may need a clean install which can be a
little time consuming depending on your level of computer skills. If
you need help there; simply ask but we will need to know your skills.
I may have a degree in computer science but I still can't read minds.

Free sites can be OK but there's a hidden price to pay in lack of
freedom and options and possible advertising on your site to pay for the
'free' part.

If you want to expand your offerings later as your knowledge increases
it can be hard and/or time-consuming to move to paid hosting.

My personal preference is paid hosting and I use Hostgator. It SO
depends on you.

2012-12-28 Thread Brett McL Robinson
Hi Pat

You may have received and answer by now, but in case you haven't, the
problem appears to be with the original paragraph, where there are some
codes between the words in some places that are not just the usual
space. I don't know enough to identify what they are, but can see some
when looking in MSWord with formatting marks displayed (Options/Display
settings).

However what I do when copying text with possible formatting problems is
to paste into a text editer (Notepad) before copying and pasting into
more sophisticated programs that may use the rogue codes. You end up wth
only the text left in the pasted copy. That might help you here to
ensure the text is clean.

I'm using Adobe 10.1.4 for viewing the .pdf.

But I think the problem must be with Legacy, as I just generated a new
.pdf looked at it while still in the print preview stage (with the
Legacy icon in the upper left corner) it seems to have the exact
same words run together as the previous 'edition.' I haven't actually
 printed anything.

Also there's the spacebar problem I mentioned in my original post.

I don't know how to generate the .pdf outside Legacy, Barry.

other parts of the events. The problem with notes (general,

I didn't see a problem with source citations except with a section
that was a quote from the Text of Source box. But I admit I

I've never had a problem like this before, but for the last few
weeks, I've had another spacing problem in Legacy. For one reason
or another I've wanted to add a space at the beginning of a line
in the notes, but when I put my cursor at the beginning of the
line and press the space bar, nothing happens.

For example, on the line which reads beautiful woman. (at the
end of the first paragraph in the quotation above), If I press
the space bar in front of beautiful, nothing happens. I can
type a followed by a space in front of beautiful and that
works fine. Or if the line is totally blank, the spacebar works fine.

Should I just re-download and re-install Legacy? If not, what
should I do? Perhaps I should just contact Technical

[LegacyUG] What's the most efficient way to prepare a pruned family tree?

2012-12-28 Thread Emily Moore
A family member asked for a .pdf of pedigree chart for our family tree and I
want to give it to him. However, I have entered tentative information for
ancestors that I have not yet confirmed, and I am reluctant to send out those
generations for fear that I may propagate errors by doing so. What's the best
way to use Legacy to prepare a pedigree chart where each line stops with the
earliest proven generation and leaves out any earlier unproven generations?

Emily

Re: [LegacyUG] Source that does not appear in ViewMaster ListsSources

2012-12-28 Thread Pat Hickin
No, there were no check marks, and by editing the Source List Name,I got it
to reappear. Oddly enough, when I returned to the original place where it
had been there were about 15 sources listed between 'MD' and 'MS.'

What could be the explanation for that??

I have a source, no author.
Both the Title and Source List Name are shown as Morrison. Allison.

BUT when I go to ViewMaster ListsSources, it does not appear! It was

still* shows (as a birth source) for at least one person -- and perhaps
others. I want to combine it with a fuller citation.

But in my Source List Names, there is nothing between MD and MS!

 Any ideas??

RE: [LegacyUG] trouble exporting correct names

2012-12-28 Thread Roland Rhoades
I finally got time to do this, and it worked. Thank you Dave, and also Jim re
splitting files, and Carl for your suggestions.
I'm glad I finally signed up for this list. I'll have more questions I'm sure.
Re Advanced deleting, if anyone else does it, be careful which # you tag the
people you want deleted; I tagged the default #1, which also identified my WWI
vet era people. Changed it to 5 and got the correct people.

But, when I did it, the orphan disconnected families were still in

If the ones you want to get rid of have been disconnected (unlinked) from your
main tree, then use: View Tree Finder to see all the unconnected trees in
your family file. Note that you should refresh this list every time you use
it. In Tree Finder you can select whole trees and Tag all the individuals
contained in each.
Then by going to Advanced Deleting you can delete everyone that has that tag
set.

 apply for space there, and

 Hope this helps. :-)
