[LegacyUG] unknown connections in Legacy
I have multiple records on people with the surnames I'm researching in the areas of my lines. I'd like suggestions as to how to make better use of what I have by adding them someway into Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] unknown connections in Legacy
Preparing to do a one-name search for Yorks in Long Buckby (England), I created a separate family file for the York surname. I copied the Yorks in my main family file that were connected to England, and then used the York file to accumulate information on new people. When I had ones that I was sure were connected to mine, I copied them to the main file. I used a unique UserID for the ones in my main file. Then I made a rule that I updated those people in the main file. If I felt the update was critical to my search for Yorks, I would have updated that file also. It was a little clumsy to move back and forth between files, but I avoided the confusion of many John Yorks etc in my main file that weren't mine. ~~ Shirley York Anderson yor...@prodigy.net ~~ My web site: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~syafam/ http://myfamilybrickwalls.blogspot.com/ From: Syble Glasscock syble_...@yahoo.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Fri, January 18, 2013 1:36:28 PM Subject: [LegacyUG] unknown connections in Legacy I have multiple records on people with the surnames I'm researching in the areas of my lines. Re: [LegacyUG] jpeg and pdf pictures
If you have something like Adobe Photoshop Elements you can open your PDF's there and it will extract the photos for you. Do it one PDF at a time. The other way (depending on the size of your photos) is to open the PDF as usual. Depending on your PDF reader there may be a camera icon in the menu that allows you to take a screenshot of the photo. You'd want to be able to do that at full size, of course. It depends what software is available to you but,no, you can't edit a photo inside a PDF. Not in the way you mean, anyway. And no, you shouldn't be editing JPG's. It's a compressed format and every time you edit and re-save you'll lose picture quality. Your photos should be in TIFF to begin with but that's not always possible. You will also not be able to use a pdf format file as a picture file in Legacy. When I receive a jpg from someone else, I immediately open it and save it as a tiff. I also do all of my scanning to tiff format. This is a lossless format. If I have eny editing I wish to do, I created a copy of name-edit.tiff. I then work with this copy and save the modifications as name-someedit.tiff. For Legacy or other usage, I save it as a jpg. Any other edits are always done to either the name-edit or the second saved tiff. Re: [LegacyUG] jpeg and pdf pictures
1. Viewing them does not degrade the quality of the picture. 2. The extent of the degradation depends on the amount of compression applied. Usually a single edit will not be a problem but continual tweaking and saving after each one will eventually reduce the quality to the point where it is unacceptable. The recommended practice is to have a Master copy which is in a high quality non-compressed format such as TIFF. When you want to edit the picture you open that Master, make your edits then save the result as a jpeg. Since you are always starting with the high quality original the jpeg copy will be more than adequate. RE: [LegacyUG] jpeg and pdf pictures
It depends on the compression … that is, how much digital information is omitted from the original file to create a smaller digital file (the jpeg). . To the casual eye, the degradation will probably not be observable. But when you magnify portions (such as to be able to read handwriting) the degradation becomes somewhat more apparent and problematic. Subsequently, if you copy the jpeg, the degradation increases each time you make a copy or a jpeg copy. Eventually, after a number of copies, details such as handwriting become more difficult to see. All of this occurs because each jpeg omits visual data from the previous file. If you want to know that you can try it. Take a JPG and re-save it a few times. Yes, photos in Legacy should be in JPG for size. That doesn't mean editing them over and over. I start with TIFF and convert a copy to JPG if I want to link it. [LegacyUG] How to record patronymic names.
Hello, I would appreciate suggestions on how to enter a patronymic name. My ancestors, being Jewish, didn't have last names in Europe until abt 1800. Before then, people went by their name and their fathers. Such as Moses Seligmann, born 1757, Germany, Seligmann being Moses father. Moses Seligmann signed documents as such, and in 1809, he and his family Adopted the surname Turkheimer, after that, documents were signed Moses Turkheimer. How should this name be entered in Legacy? On the individual information screen, If I enter Moses Seligmann (his birth name), it looks like every other middle name. I enter relevant info in notes and events. How do I properly enter Moses Seligmann, with no last name, and not looking like a middle name. Appreciate any and all suggestions. [LegacyUG] A bit off-topic - GRO indices
Sorry that this is a bit off-topic, please reply directly if you can. How long after the BMD event is it possible for the registration to happen? I have a couple on the 1881 census, married with two children. I know it is the right woman as her sister is also in the household under her maiden name. So, it isn't a previous wife with the same first name. Their marriage on FreeBMD doesn't happen until 1883. I know it is possible that they didn't actually get married until 1883 and that they were pretending on the census. However, is it possible for a marriage to happen in 1876 (a year before the age of the elder child) and not be in the indices for 7 years?
