Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy starts up without being invoked

I found these web sites that might help. I have NOT used any of these
methods, so I can NOT vouch for them. I found the "unassoc.zip" file
mentioned on a lot of sites, so hopefully it is good. But to be safe,
I'd suggest you make a good backup of the hard drive before you install
the program they mention.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91920-unassociate-file-extention-type.html

http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/remove-file-type-associations-in-windows-7/

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/how-to-manage-file-types-in-windows-7/92dffd14-a131-41a7-94d7-9a298390dd7e
(On this last link, look at the 3rd(?) link in the ANSWER area.

Or, here is a more manual method:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-to-unassociate-file-types-and-remove-file-extension-associations-in-windows-vista/

Again - I'd look in Dropbox for some setting to change first . . .

Good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy starts up without being invoked

2013-03-18 Thread Robert57P_gmail
This is just a stab in the dark . . .
Maybe her Dropbox is not configured quite right? When you update a
Legacy file on your computer, it goes to dropbox and then down to her
computer. Her computer has that file extension associated with Legacy
and, for some reason, her computer thinks she wants to open that newly
received file as soon as it comes in (just like if she double clicked on
the DATA file - the *.fdb file). If you can't find some setting in
dropbox, then, if nothing else, you might want to try UNassociating *fdb
files with Legacy. That way when a newly updated data file shows up it
won't trigger the program. This should not impact the running of Legacy
at all - it just means you have to use the icon/shortcut to start Legacy
instead of using a data file - and that's how most folks do it anyway.

Unfortunately I can't figure out how to do this in Windows 7. Used to
be you could UNassociate an extension via file manager (Windows
Explorer) in older Windows versions, but I can only figure out how to
CHANGE an association in Win 7! This won't help much, but maybe it will
trigger someone else's memory:
Option 1
* Open Windows Explorer
* Browse to a folder with an *.fdb file in it
* right click on that file (you may need to SHIFT-RightClick?), then
select OPEN WITH . . .
But that only allows you to change it.

Option 2
* Control Panel
* double click on: Default Programs
* Select "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
* wait for it to refresh
* scroll down until you find .fdb, highlight it
* Once highlighted, click "Change Program" (top right corner)
But, again, that only allows you to CHANGE the program. It does not
allow REMOVAL of .fdb from the list.

I'm sure there's a way to do it via RegEdit. But if you are not
familiar with that, then you really should not poke around in there -
you can do a LOT of "damage" real fast using that tool.

Hopefully you can find something in a drop-box setting to change so you
won't have to figure out how to unassociate the extension!?!?!?

[LegacyUG] Legacy starts up without being invoked

2013-03-18 Thread Fred Lindsay

My wife and I each have a laptop with Win 7 and Legacy Version 7.5.0.219.
When I am on the internet working with Legacy and my wife is 'surfing the net',
Legacy frequently starts up on her computer without being invoked. We are both
connected wirelessly to a router and both of us have Dropbox installed. She is
usually not using the keyboard at the time, just reading what is on her monitor.
This is by no means a major problem because she just closes out Legacy and
carries on. It is, however, a major curiosity for me.
Has anyone experienced this or have a comment about it?

Thanks and regards to all,
Fred Lindsay in snowy Ancaster Ontario.

Thanks for the DigiKam photo organizer/editor suggestion.

I have both Swedish and Norwegian ancestors to organize as well.
Keeping patronymic naming straight can be mind boggling and a challenge
to track at times.

Checked out LTools and was surprised to see so many additional features
to enhance Legacy, which is very powerful in itself. Thanks again
everyone for all your feedback!

Re: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.

2013-03-18 Thread Ron Ferguson
I have a multitude of folders and subfolders, but provided standard Windows
file-naming conventions are used, that is only use alphanumeric characters
plus hyphens and underscores, and ensure all file names are unique. If files
are then moved selecting one image from each of the folders for an
unidentified image will enable Legacy to find all the other images in that
folder.

I do not believe that there is a perfect system as it's pretty much a matter
of personal choice provided that the basic conventions are observed.

Ron, the issues with linking files are the problems that come up with
either renaming them or moving them to other folder locations.

As I've seen expressed here, some people file in a multitude of folders
and sub-folders. Moving hundreds of file-paths would not be easy.
Renaming thousands of files even worse.

The original OP was looking for a system to 'get started'. Someone just
starting out may not know enough to settle on their own 'perfect system'
from the get-go so linking files can complicate their process of discovery.

One shortcut in this regard: It's not necessary to browse to each file.
You can drag and drop files into the galleries. It doesn't always work
on the first try or second or third, but with persistence ...

RE: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.

2013-03-18 Thread Ron Walter
I never knew a contrarian had to be logical!

As to why: I wanted the folder in chronological order (as people lived) rather
than alphabetical.

In another mail I wrote that I keep very few paper documents/pictures; if I
had lots of paper documents, throwing everything into one big box (like one big
folder online) would be a disaster.

Re: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.

2013-03-18 Thread Kim
DigiKam is another great free open source photo organizer/editor. There
are versions for Linux and Windows, I'm a Linux user. http://www.digikam.org
It has the option to set it so the tags and description are written to
the meta data and so are transfered with the image. It handles all
image types well and works great for both my TIFF's and JPGS.
It does find faces in photos so you can tag them, but does not yet
suggest who that person might be based on other tags. This is something
they are working on and hopefully will be in the next release.
One feature I like is the batch queue manager. There are a large number
of options from resizing to watermarking that I use often. I can quickly
select what photos I want for web use, resize them all in one step. I
can chose if I want them in the same folder or else where, or if I want
them to keep the same names or change them. It also imports from sites
like Facebook and PicasaWeb. It also exports to many online sites. I
love using this to share photos with family on Facebook, or download an
album of photos a cousin has posted there.
There is a bit of a learning curve with the program, but it's not to
hard to pick up.

As to organizing the files, what I originally used was surname folders,
with sub-folders per family group. Something like this.

Genealogy
-> Surnames
-->Smith
---> John Smith & Mary Jones

Then under each family folder I have folders for their record groups,
births, marriage, death, census etc. When I name a file I start it with
the date it was created. So if John Smith and Mary Jone married on 25
Dec 1855 in Cambrage, MA. I would name it like this.
1855DEC25 USA MA M John Smith & Mary Jones.jpg

Many would say instead of using spaces to use a dash or underscore, I
haven't had an issue with it locally or online but it would look like this.

1855DEC25_USA_MA_M_John_Smith_&_Mary_Jones.jpg

In either way I'm recording the file starting with the date, then place,
what B for birth, BA for baptism, M for marriage, D for death, then who
the record is for.
I originally had a separate folder system for photos. However I've been
thinking about moving these into my main genealogy folders. This will be
a big job!

For my Swedish lines, it has been a big challenge. Surnames change with
each generation and often with in siblings will have different
surnames. The sons' using *sson or *ssen and the daughters using
*dotter or *datter. But I also have people people who changed their
name to military surnames.

For this line I organize everything under a Place folder. Under that I
break it down by County and Parish folders. However I'm still not 100%
happy with this system. I'll be adding tags to the images and that will
help to quickly find and work with the records for each family group
living in the same parish. Of course having everything linked into
genealogy software helps a lot to!

Re: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.

2013-03-18 Thread JLB

Re: [LegacyUG] Q about sending someone a portion of my file

2013-03-18 Thread Brian/Support
There are two options:

1. Use a Focus group of the descendants of one person

2. Tag the Descendants of that person with a tag using advanced tagging
then export everyone with that tag. Using tags though you can include
extras such as the spouses and parents of tagged individuals (those may
be missed with a focus group).

To search old messages you need to access the list archives. There is a
link in the footer added to each message from the list.

[LegacyUG] Q about sending someone a portion of my file

2013-03-18 Thread Firmin Charlot

Hi, I'm new here. I have not found a way to search past messages for an
answer to this question, so if there is a way to search, I'd welcome knowing
how to do that.

My question is this: I want to share with someone a descendant line from my
tree. We have a common ancestor, with each of our families descending from a
different sibling of that ancestor. I would like to share with her a few
generations descending from "my" sibling. If I could do this as a GEDCOM file,
it would be easiest for both of us, but I'm not sure how to go about it. (Or
even if it's possible.) NOTE: I am looking to share the generations
DESCENDING from a single person, not ascending from them. I know how to do the
ascending file.

Thanks,
Stephanie

Re: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.

2013-03-18 Thread Ron Ferguson
I have kept out of this discussion as it does not seem appropriate to
suggest my system, or to be accurate lack of. Unfortunately I now have too
many images to contemplate change.

However, unless I have missed something, I cannot understand why one would
not attach images to Legacy, I do and over many years have had very few
problems. During this time I have moved my data onto 3 (I think) new
computers, but other than that have not really had to change many links.

Whilst I, and JLB, know how to enter images into webpages or reports what
happens if someone does not? In any event, the process of so doing is an
absolute time consuming bore. I do it for some Event or Source Images but
for nothing else.

BTW for manipulating photos, the free GIMP will do most jobs, Photoshop is
not necessary for most people.

Photoshop Elements, IMO, is very good for editing photos.

The Organizer (the other half) is very poor. In particular in regards to
tagging. You can add keywords in the Organizer. And captions, I think.
Everything else (locations, copyright, source, object name and all the
other IPTC fields) can only be done one photo at a time through the File
Info window accessible only through the Editor. It's quite a nonsensical
arrangement. The mapping feature in the Organizer is also pathetic.
There's no batch-mode either.

I could go on for hours about how much I dislike it. I did use it many
years ago and tried a couple of trials since then hoping it had been
improved. It seemed to be the best there was until I found something
better. And I was so relieved to find something better.

Photo Mechanic, as well as GeoSetter and XnView can be used for adding
metadata as well as other functions that differ from one to the other;
the first two also handle GPS. GeoSetter is particularly good at that.

None of them is an 'organizer' per se. In other words, you're working on
the images wherever they already exist on your computer. Which is good
because if you move them around or rename them you can still find them.
(Another yuck point about APSE Organizer; it creates a linked catalog.)

XnView and GeoSetter are both free. Photo Mechanic is a free trial. I
would suggest trying all of them and having a look. Once you establish a
work flow with them or one or two of them you'll find what you prefer.
Try Photo Mechanic when you've got time to enjoy the trial. The others
don't matter since you can have them forever. XnView also has a portable
version if you're into PortableApps. http://portableapps.com/

About not linking files to Legacy - I did link them at one time. From
where I started to where I am now I probably moved or renamed files
about 20 times. By the time I got to 15,000 source citations with images
attached, relinking them to Legacy had gotten really tedious. One day I
knocked myself up the side of the head about my stupidity in that
regard. The filing system I use now makes it really easy to access files
anywhere and anytime in a variety of ways, generally quicker than I can
click through to them inside Legacy. Linking files to Legacy seems to me
a make-work project with zero benefits.

I link individual pictures because I like to print them out in reports.
But only one per person. If I really want to get serious with photos I
can easily search them and create things outside Legacy like collage or
focused PDFs. There are so many ways of being creative with images and I
really don't see Legacy being the place for it.

Of course, all data is extracted from each record and entered into
Legacy and sourced.
