Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread Kathy Meyer
That's what I would do Elizabeth. Download the free version of Legacy on
your new computer, then insert your flash drive with your Legacy file on
it; then just 'open' the file on the flash drive and 'save as' to your new
computer in whatever file/folder you like. Whenever you close Legacy, it
should prompt you to backup your files; if it doesn't, there is probably an
option that is toggled off. It still automatically saves everything that
you change so as long as you keep using that same file to make changes, you
probably didn't lose anything. It is more risky though, to try to remember
to copy everything the way you describe (although I may be missing
something in your description)

You can also use Dropbox for a 'backup' copy so even if your computer
crashes, there is always an offline copy. That's where I backup mine
anyway.

Good luck! Kathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread JLB
Yes, you should start with installing the latest version of Legacy.
Copying and pasting your backup Legacy folder over the top of the
installation is not the best idea but it will do in a pinch. That way
you'll preserve your user settings.

After you have it all on your new computer, you can install Legacy again
over the top of everything to make sure you have all the files that
should be there. I think that's how I'd do it anyway if I was where you are.

For the future, there's a backup button that can be dragged onto your
toolbar in Legacy. Right click on the toolbar and it will bring up a
menu of icons. Find the backup button and drag it up to the top and
click OK.

Or you can back up using the File menu. It says right there - Backup
Family File. This will create a zip file. Make a folder for them
wherever you want and you can customize the Location for them on the
Customize Backup screen.

In the future you can use Restore to bring back a zip file.

Well, in this day and age there are still some who don't know
everything..:-)

I didn't even know Legacy had a 'backup' button. I've never seen it so it
must be hidden somewhere.

I use a flash drive for backup for my computer information. I always just
copy/paste from my hard drive to the flash drive whenever I need to update
the things I have on my hard drive. As far as I know I have never 'lost'
anything by doing that. However I am not sure about moving Legacy to
another computer which is why I am asking.

I do have the main Legacy folder backed up on the flash drive (C:/Legacy).
I also copy/pasted the original legacy 'exe' file from my 'Downloads'
folder (C:/Downloads). This was the original .exe file I used to install
Legacy on my computer when I first began using the program. I have updated
the program now and then).

Can I just download the latest Legacy version of the free program from the
Legacy web site and then copy/paste the Legacy folder from my flash drive
into the C:/ of my new computer? Or won't that work?

One just has to wonder how these things happen in this day and age of
free and virtually free backup options.

Do you have any Legacy BACKUPS? I mean the zip file that's created when
you click the BACKUP button.

If so, install Legacy on your new computer. Then click the RESTORE
option in Legacy and browse to your most recently dated zip file (on a

the rest of it.

There's another dealie-do with the USR files but I'll save that for now.

[LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-24 Thread elizabeth
Hi,

I couldn't find an answer I could understand in the archives so I am hoping
someone can help me here.

My computer crashed and I need to move legacy to my new computer. How do I
do it? Can I just copy/paste the 'Legacy folder' and the 'Legacy.exe file
in my download folder' to my flash drive and then copy/paste them to my new
computer?

I use the free version of Legacy.

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] I can't uninstall Legacy

2013-03-24 Thread Brian Lehman
Hi Ron,
So far they have, I've added several scans of records to sources since
the reinstall
and everything is being displayed as a thumbnail.
Oddly, another problem I'm having, that I have long given up on,
continues.
When I open an Individual's screen, periodically it shrinks to its
minimum size.
The fix for this is deleting the Legacy2USR file, then my screen holds
its size...for a while,
it eventually shrinks again and I delete the file again, and the cycle
continues.
I'd hoped the recent new install would resolve this, but it continues.
I've resigned myself, to having my screens shrink every 4 days or so.
Take Care,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] Is there any way to copy source details?

2013-03-24 Thread Brian/Support
Use the source clipboard.

If you have entered the source for one person you can copy it to the
source clipboard (This is NOT the windows clipboard) by using the copy
to clipboard icon on their sources screen.
When entering details on a person you open the clipboard by clicking on
the icon with the blue upward arrowhead.
There are also icons to add the source to a single item or to all data
(including events) for the person.

For more information search the Help for clipboards (there is also an
event clipboard that will copy an event, complete with attached sources.

Under the assumption that the next major upgrade (Version 8.0) won't come
