Michael,

Your item 4 Click on Show Map, should only need to be done once as it should
stick. If nothing seems to happen I suggest that you try left clicking the
empty space below "show map" and if no luck, shut Legacy down and restart
after a couple of minutes.

I am on a wireless connection. I have a 5 GB upload/download monthly limit.
I am at 4.7 GB and it resets on the 10th of the month.

In Win8:
1. View
2. Master Lists
3. Location
4. Click on Show Map
I get the message:
"It appears you are not online. Make sure you are connected to the internet
and try again."

I will try the Windows 7 again.

Thanks.

Michael,

I have Legacy on Win XP, Vista and WIN 7 but not WIN 8, I'm not sure whether
I will ever buy the latter version! On the ones I have the mapping works
pretty fast, so if you are waiting for ages then something is wrong - "how
do you mean "I have a limit on this"? or you on dial-up or something? In any
event I don't think that the files are large.

There are various ways of accessing the maps, which one is being used? I
will check it.

I stand corrected. I didn't even look over to that side of the page. Thank
you.

However, this mapping feature acts differently on my Vista PC than on my
Windows 8 PC. On the Vista PC I get the message that the map is not finished
downloading. How long do I need to wait? How large of a file is downloading?
I have a limit on this.

Michael,

Please check again. Go to the Legacy Home Tab on the left of the tool bar,
and the Options button is on the to right, clicking that gives "options" as
one choice amongst others, and clicking that "option" should give you
choices as to when Legacy can open the internet.

I have gone into this detail because if the choices are not there you will
need to uninstall and reinstall Legacy.

Jenny,

I am uncertain as to whether Tony and yourself are on the same wavelength. I
suspect that Tony is using the Family Search functions from within Legacy
and is downloading the result to his PC (much as we used to do with the IGI)
and when he does, it is wrongly sourced.

Tony, I cannot definitively answer your question as I have only had a brief
look at downloading the searches myself, and have not worked out whether or
not there is a bug in this, I have tried asking for further information to
make sure that I am using a correct procedure, and to confirm that none of
this is limited to LDS members.

To date I have had no response.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on an external drive

2013-04-25 Thread Sherry/Support
Connie,

Legacy must be installed on the computer where you wish to use the program.

Some people have successfully installed Legacy and ran it from their
external hard drive, but only as long as the drive is connected to the
computer used for installing Legacy.

Legacy needs to have entries in the registry and some system files
either installed or updated on the computer.

You can save your data and multimedia files to the external drive and
access them from there, if you wish. Just make sure you have a good
file structure and I'd recommend that you create a Legacy folder with
Docs, Pictures, Sounds and Videos subfolders to store your multimedia
files in and a Legacy/Data folder for your Legacy files.

Sincerely,
Sherry

We are agreed on that. I was confirming that files should be saved as

Re: [LegacyUG] Census record images

2013-04-25 Thread Brian/Support
The only area we have received complaints about is that when Legacy
creates web pages it always uses the .jpg extension for the copies of
images it uses on the pages. Users who have images with .jpeg as the
extension dislike having the extension changed. Even though legacy does
make a copy of the file with the correct for the web page extension in
the pictures folder of the web pages project so if they upload the
entire project folder and its picture sub-folder to their web site the
pictures will work.

There is the fact though that when making copies for the web pages
Legacy may be converting many image format files to jpeg files (BMP,
PNG, TIFF etc.) since users can link all these types to their file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census record images

2013-04-25 Thread Ron Ferguson
Yes, Brian it it does change extensions to jpg when creating webpages and no
Brian it should not. If I have a gif it is because I want a gif and *not* a
jpg. Similarly if I have a png I want a png and *not* a jpg. Why? you may
ask, because gifs and PNGs support transparency and JPGs do not. So when I
want a transparent background I *need* a gif or a png, so please stop
changing them!!

In the past there were a number of missing files reported within Legacy ie.
not webpages, which turned out to be jpegs and changing to jpg corrected the
problems. I haven't seen any recently so it may have been resolved with
later versions, or that everyone is using jpg. Please don't bother to all
write at once!

[LegacyUG] Source used by Family search

2013-04-25 Thread Tony Rolfe
Thanks to Jenny and Ron for their responses.

Ron has the right premise. I am, indeed, using the FamilySearch button
in Legacy (7.5.0.219). When I get to FamilySearch, I use the copy data
facility to get extra data into Legacy. This always seems to come over
with a source of "England Marriages..."

I've gone back through my sources and found an old master source
"England Marriages...". This was originally used for the Ancestry
collection of the same name, but has now been overwritten by the
FamilySearch source. Not at all what I wanted.

Is this something I should report as a bug and, if so, to whom? It
doesn't seem to be Legacy's fault, but I don't know how to contact FS?

Cheers

Tony

[LegacyUG] PDF Error

2013-04-25 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Now for something entirely new.

In preparation for an upcoming family reunion this summer, I've been
creating some reports to distribute (digitally) as PDF files. I've always
disliked the "ComponentOne PDF Generator" that is the built-in PDF writer
used by Legacy because it is so slow and creates an old outdated PDF file
that is version 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x). Compare that to the current PDF
specification 1.7 (Acrobat 9.1) and you get the feeling that something is
old besides myself.

Anyhow, when I went to create a PDF from within Legacy, I got an error
window that popped up. It said:

SaveFile Error

Error "-2147417848" - Automation Error

The object has disconnected from its client.

Now I can assure you that while my attention span may be short, I most
certainly did not disconnect from the task at hand. J

I know this is not a Legacy error but most likely one created internally
from the PDF writer. The error is not reproducible but has popped up 3 times
in the past week. Just wondering if anybody else has ever seen this strange
one.

I feel so trapped in being forced to create these PDFs from within Legacy
given the fact that I've spent the money to own Acrobat. I sure wish there
was a method in which Acrobat could be a plug-in for Legacy.

You might try selecting one of the free PDF Writers like PDF995 or
CutePDF for your printer in Print Setup in Legacy and print your file
to that printer (not using the default PDF option). Maybe that would
be a more current PDF file.

I use CuteWriter and it works great. It is shareware with a free trial
period.

[LegacyUG] .rtf v .docx

2013-04-25 Thread Ellen
I don't recall if this was mentioned before, but we are preparing to do a book
on various lines of the family. We have been working with the smaller lines
first and gradually going to the larger lines.

I finally got to a line that is 41 pages long and had a number of photos
included. While working on that line in an RTF, Microsoft Word kept not
responding and I had to start over numbers of times. I finally converted the
document to a .docx file. In .rtf it was 468,000+ KB and went down to 150 KB
as a .docx. I'm using Legacy's full and current version in Word 2010. When
uploading to Dropbox or opening on any computer including the one it was
created on, no photos or scanned documents show up. It only shows up on the
version saved in my computer.

Questions:

Why did Word stop responding in .rft?
Did I have to resave it in .docx?
Should I have done something different?
Will I have to resave all bigger documents in .docx instead of .rtf?
Any other suggestions?
Will I have to give it to a publisher on a disc or thumbdrive?
How large of a document can I work with in Word? I have some lines that will
be 700+ pages and a whole lot of photos and scanned documents.

God bless,
Ellen
