RE: [LegacyUG] Archived LUG e-mails

2013-12-28 Thread Fred Lindsay
Thanks for your help.I have tried from 3 different computers and still can not
connect. I dealt with my ISP for about 2 hours. He tried numerous things and
could not clear the problem. He created a report through DOS and is sending it
to the 'higher ups'. He indicated that it might be 24 to 48 hours before they
find a solution. Will keep you posted since it may be of help to others in the
future. I will try through friends/family who use a different IPS Also could
not connect by going through the link on Legacy home page. It is after
midnight here so best get to bed.Again thanks for the suggestions and have a
Happy New Year.Regards,Fred

Since others can confirm that the Legacy archive site is indeed accessible,
this is what your obstacle will be. Most ISPs will never admit to a problem of
their own doing but will silently fix the problem behind the scenes and then
exclaim it must have cleared itself up. In the meanwhile, maybe you can try the
URL from a friend’s computer preferably using a different ISP. For example, try
the public library just to see if it works there. If your ISP has a local
office, you might try a visit there and lots of time they have a public demo
computer set up in their outer office. Try the URL from that computer and if it
still no-workie from there, then show that to one of their techs. I once had my
local Charter Communications office blocking access to Microsoft and I proved
it on their public lobby computer. Which was quite embarrassing for them
considering that one of the major investors in Charter Communications was Paul
Allen of Microsoft. Brian in CA From: Fred Lindsay

Another solution, which I thought of while reading your email, is to
empty your temporary internet cache. Each browser operates a little
differently on how it's done - generally under Tools > Options or
Tools > Internet Options. Then restart your computer to clear
everything out that may be hanging around in memory.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Partnerships/Marriages

2013-12-28 Thread Alex MacPhee
Michelle,
>if they make use of modern fertility options, there is going to be a
>continuation of one or even both of those lines - though connected to each
>other only legally.
This time last year, I had not expected to need to record such a family
relationship. I had an entry for a cousin, herself childless, and who was one
of the first batch of relatives to be entered into my genealogy database.
By the most unexpected fluke, I discovered that she was an adopted child, not
the natural child of her parents. It turns out that late in life she had put
her adoption papers on a dedicated internet web site where these things can be
sold. It was my own sister who found the web site with adoption papers listed,
and sent it to me as the family historian. Double-take hardly describes my
reaction. I now have it confirmed, and Legacy is able to cope with adoptions. I
discovered, too, that her sister is also adopted, but the sister is also
otherwise related to the adoptive parents. So, adoptions with family
connexions, adoptions with none ; and again just recently, I now find I have to
record same sex relationships where at least one of the pair already has
natural children by a previous relationship, and adoptive by a new.
I can imagine that this is going to be a technically tricky thing to implement
in any genealogy database system. At present, it's getting quite
string-and-sealing-wax to record some of the information I've uncovered.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same Sex Partnerships/Marriages

2013-12-28 Thread Michelle F
Hi All,

A first-time poster to the list, and this caught my attention.
It seems to me there is genealogy in same-sex couples, at least up to the two
participants. And if they make use of modern fertility options, there is going
to be a continuation of one or even both of those lines - though connected to
each other only legally. Still, I wouldn't want to lose those connections in my
recording for future research leads.

Cheers,
Michelle

It works for me exactly the same way it did in 7.5. Alt+S also closes
the note entry but it does save what was entered. You do have to hold

[LegacyUG] Shared Events - Printing Out in Reports

2013-12-28 Thread KathyB
Am I missing something with shared events? At first I thought they were
really great in that I didn't have to copy and paste the same item for
each individual person - but now I'm not sure I'm using them correctly.

For example - I put a census event in for the head of household, and
share it with all other family members. Great, so far. But, when I want
to print out the wife's "Individual Report" the event detail doesn't
show - it only states she was a "witness" to the event and states whose
record the primary event can be found on. What I'm wanting is for the
complete event detail to show on each and every person's individual
report - not just a reference to someone else's page.

Am I missing something, or do I just need to do what I've been doing in
the past and copying and pasting the event to each person?

I have updated my Windows setting. Since my heritage is 100% German, being a
first generation American, I share with a lot of Europeans and my data comes
to me in European format on the microfilms, hence dd MMM is preferable

I have thus far avoided Windows 8 but perhaps this will help ...

In the Windows Control Panel, there is a section there called Region and
Language where you can set the Windows 7 Short Date format to what you like.
I have mine set to "-MM-DD" as that is the way I generally like it for
all I do on all my computers.

Except Legacy ... I like my Legacy display as "MMM DD, " as most people
who look at the file and reports prefer that format.

I also liked previous Legacy's understanding my input as "MM DD "
because most of the published data is either as "MMM DD, " or "MM DD
". With Legacy 8, I now have to do a mental translation of what I'm
seeing in sources before entering anything in my file.

Elsie,

Since the input order had to match the computer setting, this option
is now set automatically from your computer settings.
The setting for your computer can be seen in the System Tray with the
clock and can be changed in Regional Settings.

The display can be anything you like but the input order has to be
the same as the computer setting.

In 7.5 this is written above the option where you set the input order.

Are you saying that you could use a different order to the computer setting?

be duplicates of the one In My Documents.
I'm wondering if the 2 app data folders are necessary or is one just a
duplicate. if they are redundant where should the appropriate app data folder
be.

Thanks, Rob, for your suggestion, it is a good one. I am a creature of habit so

Would it be an idea to enter (e.g.) "12 jan 2013"or "Jan 12, 2013" just to
be sure that at least the input is correct? You can then check how Legacy
translates it on screen. That is how I do it at least...

If he types in 1/12/2013, does that get interpreted as 1 December 2013 or as
12 January 2013. Legacy 7 had an option to specify how you wanted it
interpreted. Legacy 8 does not have the option to specify. As I understand it
from other postings, in Legacy 8, the interpretation is determined by a setting
at the Windows operating system level.

I don't understand what you are asking. You can input a date in more or less
any format you like and it will be formatted according to what you have
selected in Options>Customise>5.1.

If you have selected to display day-month-year and "format with 2-digit
day/month" then you input "1 December 2013" it will display as "01 December
2013." Conversely, if you left "format with 2-digit day/month"
UNselected and then input "01 December 2013" it will display as "1 December
2013."

Incidentally, with that day-month-year format, if you input the month as
"Dec" it will display as "December".

Re: [LegacyUG] Input format for dates

2013-12-28 Thread saare
Thank you, Brian, for the explanation. I was able to have two different
formats, one for my computer and one for Legacy. Perhaps its was a function of
the computer I was using. I have changed my Windows format and am up and
running again.

Thanks to all who answered my question. The help files seemed to indicate I was
missing something.

If you use a combination of words for months and numbers for days and
years you can enter anything: 1 Jun, Jun 1, June 1 etc will all be
correctly interpreted. It is only when you use all numeric input where
there can be confusion between which is the day and which is the month
that your input pattern has to match the settings you have in Windows.
Your Windows is set to interpret 1 6 1900 as Month Day Year so the 1 is
Jan and the 6 is the day. 23 6 1900 will be correctly set as 23 Jun
because there is no possible month number 23 (Any number above 12 in the
day or month will become a day). In 7.5 and earlier you could specify
your numeric input form but there was the same provision that the form
you chose had to match your Windows date setting. We in support got
trouble reports from users who had set their input to a format which was
different from their Windows setting and had problems with numeric
dates. In 8.0 we decided since Legacy can read your Windows date format
setting we will just do that.

When you installed, you probably selected the option to convert in place.

Use File->Save As to save a copy in the location you now want it at.

If you have Options->Customize 1.2 set for Always Open This File, you need to
reset that to point to the new copy/location.

Re [LegacyUG] data path

2013-12-28 Thread David Newton
I think the default path is the first place that Legacy looks for your
file as opposed to the place that it saves your data (possibly new files
will go there). If you want your data file in the default location then
I guess you will need to save a copy of the file into that location
using the Save File As option in the file ribbon.
