Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0385

2014-01-21 Thread Brian/Support
It is only the NUMERIC date format that must be the same between Legacy
and Windows so that both treat an input of 1/6/2010 as the same date (1
Jun 2010 or 1 Jan 2010 depending on the Numeric date format). Once a
date has been entered and interpreted you can DISPLAY the date in any
way you choose.

I was not following the thread so I do not know what the original
problem was but displaying the month as January vice Jan should not
cause any problems unless the person with the problem is using one of
the international versions. I just input a problem report today where
some of the international versions are reporting dates using valid
prefixes like abt, bef, aft etc. as bad dates and some are not
recognizing the names of the months in the non-English languages so they
are reported as bad dates.

If you want to delve further into the many problems with MyHeritage, email me
off list. I did sign up for the premium version, and have regretted it ever
since. Unbelievable lack of support; unbelievable lack of knowledge in the few
replies received; absolutely no resolution or hope of one when a response is
received.

Worst of all, most of the information I have looked at is TOTALLY FALSE and
unreliably sourced, all too many ancestry.com type websites that use other
totally unreliably sourced websites as their sources.

I would to thank people for
the replies. I think Legacy is great software except for the fact that it cannot
handle all Polish diacritics. Legacy has some diacritics in its Special
Characters Bar, so I do not understand why a few more cannot be included there.
Why would it need a new platform (whatever that is)?
I decided to subscribe to
MyHeritage for one year- only for the database and “super search” facility. I
have no interest in its “Premium” subscription. It has already proved better
than Ancestry for me, because my parents were each from different non-English
speaking European countries. When I tried Ancestry for a year, I only found a
little information on very distant cousins descended from people who emigrated
to the US. Most of it I had already found by other means. With MyHeritage, I
have already found
family groups of people who are definitely relatives and others I am very
confident are related somehow.
My Heritage is however irritating because it wants
you to use its social media and more expensive subscriptions, although they are
probably cheaper than Ancestry.

I have limited experience with MyHeritage, but
that is because that program has so many problems. I doesn't correctly import
GEDCOMS, for one, so perhaps it doesn't export them correctly either.

Some
university needs to fund a new, comprehensive GEDCOM replacement, but if Legacy
can't display the other languages, that may do no good.

If the German names are
showing, it may well be that it is the Legacy lack of accommodation that is the
problem. Many of us wish they would solve that problem, but they tell us it
would involve switching platforms. Some of us will probably not live to see it
happen.

This is my first experience
with a GEDCOM, so I am not sure where the problem is. The GEDCOM was sent by a
distant cousin in Poland. We rely on electronic translations which can be
problematic enough, so I at least want get my facts right before contacting him
again.
I downloaded the GEDCOM
into a new family file. The vast majority of individuals are shown as “unknown”
but some have dates of birth or death. There are no names of
places for anyone in this file.
Could these problems be
caused by Legacy not recognizing names of individuals or places containing
Polish diacritics? The only names of people displayed are German (without
diacritics) from ancestors who emigrated to Poland in 1784. This may however be
a coincidence- I have previously tried pasting letters/characters with
diacritics into Legacy notes and the only thing that happened when saving the
information was that letters with diacritics were automatically substituted with
other letters or symbols.
My understanding is that
GEDCOM is an international program and handles all languages. It appears that
the sender uses “MyHeritage” web based software, which seems to be an
international program where the user selects their language.
Just before downloading the
GEDCOM, Legacy showed only two “Unrecognized items”: MOON and PRIN. Later,
Legacy showed there were many “unrecognised lines” for both “Individual Records”
and “Family Records”, which were placed in the notes. For
example:
BIRT: RIN
MH:IF438
DEAT: RIN
MH:IF439
RIN
MH:SC109

Technology
is not my strong point, so I hope someone can help me solve this
“mystery”.

John

Randy, you didn't get a reply yet, so I'll take a very wild guess. If I'm
wrong, which I probably am, at least your question will get to the top of the
list for others to see.

My guess would be that the original which was copied to the media folder was a
read only file. To check this out, find the original, highlight it, then right
click to check the properties. This should tell you if it is a read only file,
and if it is, you should be able to take that characteristic off.

Helen,
You can exclude these events GLOBALLY from the PP checking. Go to View >
Master Lists > Edit Event Definition. Highlight the event (anything that
happens after death like an obituary or a cemetery) and click edit over on the
right.

At the top you will see some check boxes. Check the one that says to exclude

RE: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems indicator regarding birth gaps

2014-01-21 Thread Bob Austen
I have always used 'c birth date' for the birth when I only have a baptism
date. 'Est' or 'Bef' work too. However, Legacy doesn't always recognize this
as a date, or may interpret it incorrectly.

Example PP: If I have a baptism date of 13 May 1849 and use c 13 May 1849 as a
birth date, the PP will pick up on the birth date when checking against other
birthdates. If I erred and had the birth as c 13 May 1859, baptism 13 May 1849
there would be NO PP reported regarding Baptism. If the birth was simply 13
May 1859 and the baptism 13 May 1849 the Legacy would report 'Baptism before
birth'. So Legacy does look at Baptism dates but only seems to check them
against the birth dates.

I prefer the use of 'c/Est/Bef Baptism date' for the birth, rather than leaving
it blank. I immediately know that it the baptism date. With 13 May 1849 as
the baptism example, I see others using 'May 1849' (and other variations) for
the birth, which I find misleading.

Using 'c birth date' now appears to sort properly, however if there is a
Baptism date and no Birth date the person will not sort by date in the index.

I have not tested Intelimerge in build 385 but I remember Intelimerge would not
recognize a date with a 'c' in front of it - that is, two identical people with
a birth date of 13 May 1849 would be recognized as being the same, but two with
c 13 May 1849 would not.

Intelimerge will not look for a baptism date if the birth date is blank.

Do an estimated birth date with est or bef as a date prefix.

A lot of baptisms are done on older children or adults. Sometimes the date is
applicable, esp if it's a christening (naming of child done with sprinkling)
shortly after birth) but many times it's not. My baptism was nearly 30 years
after I was born! A gap would certainly show if the bap date was used, along

of the parents" flag!

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging Sources

2014-01-21 Thread Brian/Support
Unfortunately you cannot combine sources which use different
SourceWriter templates. Your message says your correct source is using a
different template than the original incorrect ones so you cannot
combine the two sources. I am afraid it will be a copy and paste
exercise to convert each incorrect source to the correct one.

Without know which templates and therefore what data is in each one all
I can suggest is what I would do as a general method since you cannot
have both sources open at the same time to copy and paste detail data
from the old to the new.

If there are only minor variations between uses for the source (like
changing a page reference in a book) details I would set up the correct
source on the source clipboard and paste it to everyone where the old
source is used. If necessary you can modify the details as you paste
them if they differ between people.
As I paste the new source to the person I would then select the
incorrect one and use the remove button to remove that old source.

If each use of the old source has a lot of detail that has to be copied
to the new and they are all different for each person then it may be
useful to open Notepad or a text editor to serve as a temporary place to
store the details. This would be for a census for example where there
are many fields in each citation and where many fields may change from
family to family.
Open Notepad
Open the old source detail for a person
Copy each line of the source detail to a line in the notepad file
Close that detail
Cite the New source and use copy and paste to transfer each detail from
the notepad file into the fields of the new template.
Once you have set up that New source you can use the source clipboard to
reuse it until you need to create a new set of detail entries for other
people.

As in the simpler case, once you have pasted the new source to a
person's event use the remove button to remove the old source.

Re: [LegacyUG] Plain text question

2014-01-21 Thread Brian/Support
In Tbird got to Tools > Options > Composition
Look for a Send Options button
Click on that and you can tell Tbird to always send in plain text only
to those addressees specified as plain text in your address book.
There is also a plain text domains tab in the lower section of the
screen. Select that and you can add Legacyusers.com as a plain text
domain then all messages to users in that domain will receive plain text
messages.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5: unrecognised items and lines from imported GEDCOM

2014-01-21 Thread John Bernacki
I would to thank people for the replies. I think Legacy is great software
except for the fact that it cannot handle all Polish diacritics. Legacy has
some diacritics in its Special Characters Bar, so I do not understand why a few
more cannot be included there. Why would it need a new platform (whatever that
is)?

I decided to subscribe to MyHeritage for one year- only for the database and
“super search” facility. I have no interest in its “Premium” subscription. It
has already proved better than Ancestry for me, because my parents were each
from different non-English speaking European countries. When I tried Ancestry
for a year, I only found a little information on very distant cousins descended
from people who emigrated to the US. Most of it I had already found by other
means. With MyHeritage, I have already found family groups of people who are
definitely relatives and others I am very confident are related somehow.

My Heritage is however irritating because it wants you to use its social media
and more expensive subscriptions, although they are probably cheaper than
Ancestry.

John

I have limited experience with MyHeritage, but that is because that program has
so many problems. I doesn't correctly import GEDCOMS, for one, so perhaps it
doesn't export them correctly either.

Some university needs to fund a new, comprehensive GEDCOM replacement, but if
Legacy can't display the other languages, that may do no good.

If the German names are showing, it may well be that it is the Legacy lack of
accommodation that is the problem. Many of us wish they would solve that
problem, but they tell us it would involve switching platforms. Some of us will
probably not live to see it happen.

GEDCOM

This is my first experience with a GEDCOM, so I am not sure where the problem
is. The GEDCOM was sent by a distant cousin in Poland. We rely on electronic
translations which can be problematic enough, so I at least want get my facts
right before contacting him again.

I downloaded the GEDCOM into a new family file. The vast majority of
individuals are shown as “unknown” but some have dates of birth or death.
There are no names of places for anyone in this file.

Could these problems be caused by Legacy not recognizing names of individuals
or places containing Polish diacritics? The only names of people displayed are
German (without diacritics) from ancestors who emigrated to Poland in 1784.
This may however be a coincidence- I have previously tried pasting
letters/characters with diacritics into Legacy notes and the only thing that
happened when saving the information was that letters with diacritics were
automatically substituted with other letters or symbols.

My understanding is that GEDCOM is an international program and handles all
languages. It appears that the sender uses “MyHeritage” web based software,
which seems to be an international program where the user selects their
language.

Just before downloading the GEDCOM, Legacy showed only two “Unrecognized
items”: MOON and PRIN. Later, Legacy showed there were many “unrecognised
lines” for both “Individual Records” and “Family Records”, which were placed in
the notes. For example:

BIRT: RIN MH:IF438

DEAT: RIN MH:IF439

RIN MH:SC109

Technology is not my strong point, so I hope someone can help me solve this
“mystery”.

Regards,

John

Re: [LegacyUG] How to enter a U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880

2014-01-21 Thread Brian/Support
On the override tab of the source details there is a button which will
generate the default citation. It is to the right of the box where you
input your form for the citation.

Once you have the default citation in the box you can edit it.

2014-01-21 Thread circe
Thank you Michele and Brian for being such a great help. Brian,
you've pointed out something I didn't know existed and now that
I've fine tuned the Events section, it should make my life much
easier.

And while we're on about Potential Problems, why does this
feature point out problems under a child's name, saying that
there is a problem with his/her parent's date, etc. Why not point
out the parent instead? Several of these problems are impossible
to find and I've had to delete the PP, rather than fix it.

If you have the deluxe edition you can edit the Event definition and
tell Legacy to exclude those from potential problem checking.

View > Master Lists > Event Definitions
Select any event and click Edit
In the top section under the Event name are options including:
Exclude from Potential Problems report.

Helen,
You can exclude these events GLOBALLY from the PP checking. Go to View >
Master Lists > Edit Event Definition. Highlight the event (anything that
happens after death like an obituary or a cemetery) and click edit over on the
right.

At the top you will see some check boxes. Check the one that says to exclude

It called "Request Feature" and IT IS under the Help tab - right between
"Report A Bug" and "Legacy Homepage". You can also get to it by looking
at the "Support" tile (on the right hand side) on the Legacy Home tab
(right underneath the "Updates" tile) - here it is called "Making A
Suggestion".

You would not be requesting this action as a feature you would be
requesting a MODIFICATION to this action as a feature.

If the Report includes the information that the individual concerned was
married to Joe Bloggs and includes Joe Bloggs's Birth and Death dates/places
then it is entirely correct that the Sources for that information should be
included. I don't know why you would want to exclude them.

RE: [LegacyUG] Plain text question

2014-01-21 Thread Paul Gray
Bob,

I replied to your test message indicating that it did indeed come through in
plain text. With respect to replies to messages I have no knowledge of
Thunderbird, but Outlook 2007 creates the reply in the same format as the
original message unless I manually override it despite the fact that my default
message format for all messages (not just this group) is plain text.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Plain text question

Not directly related to Legacy, but it is related to this mailing list.

I use Thunderbird as my e-mail client. In my address book for
LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com, I have it set to:
Prefers to receive messages formatted as PLAIN TEXT

But when I create a new e-mail and address it to this user group, I look under
OPTIONS, DELIVERY FORMAT, it is defaulting to AUTO-DETECT instead of PLAIN TEXT
ONLY. (I manually changed it to plain text for this e-mail. I'm not sure if
it would have defaulted to plain text or not).

How to I force Thunderbird to send the msg as PLAIN TEXT instead of using
AUTO-DETECT?

Even worse, when I reply to someone, it appears that it is not using PLAIN
TEXT. Any suggestions?

Is there an easy way in Thunderbird to determine what format is being used
before I send the msg? And/or a way to tell what format a rcvd msg is in?

Thanks,
Bob

This is a test. I left it at "auto-detect" instead of changing it to PLAIN
TEXT ONLY under the OPTIONS menu. It SHOULD default to plain text due to how
Legacy is set up in my address book.

Checking to see how it shows up once it hits the list. (Sorry - I can't think
of any other way of testing this without involving the list...)

Instead of complaining about the way the program was designed, why don't
you consider submitting this as a feature request which you can find under

RE: [LegacyUG] How to enter a U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880

2014-01-21 Thread John S. Adams
Use the Override Tab to change the wording of the citation. It appears that
you have to re-write the entire citation. I don't see an easy way to copy the
cite and to change just a few words. Maybe another Legacy user can help with
that. You may have to make overrides to both the Master Source (create a new
master) and the Detail to get just what you want. Be sure to check the "Use
this customized..." box just below each override text field.

The skipped files are fine - you would expect on a re-installation for

[LegacyUG] Plain text question

2014-01-21 Thread Robert57P_gmail
Not directly related to Legacy, but it is related to this mailing list.

I use Thunderbird as my e-mail client. In my address book for
LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com, I have it set to:
Prefers to receive messages formatted as PLAIN TEXT

But when I create a new e-mail and address it to this user group, I look
under OPTIONS, DELIVERY FORMAT, it is defaulting to AUTO-DETECT instead
of PLAIN TEXT ONLY. (I manually changed it to plain text for this
e-mail. I'm not sure if it would have defaulted to plain text or not).

How to I force Thunderbird to send the msg as PLAIN TEXT instead of
using AUTO-DETECT?

Even worse, when I reply to someone, it appears that it is not using
PLAIN TEXT. Any suggestions?

Is there an easy way in Thunderbird to determine what format is being
used before I send the msg? And/or a way to tell what format a rcvd msg
is in?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] using multiple files

2014-01-21 Thread Robert57P_gmail
The MRU (most recently used) list moved. Instead of clicking FILE and
finding the list there, you now click on the blue circle with the L in
side (way upper left corner). Your MRU files will show up there.

NOTE - If I remember right, the blue circle may, instead, be the far
left menu item, to the left of FILE. It depends on what "design" you
have picked.

Of course you can also use SPLIT SCREEN and maximize one file. In that
case you would click the RESTORE button (near top right - next to ABOUT)
and then maximize the other file. And I recently discovered you can
actually have SEVERAL files opened with the split screen - it is not
limited to 2.

Note that the WINDOW menu item is missing. This is what you would
usually use to switch between different currently opened (split screen)
files. This has been reported on this forum. Not sure if they will be
putting it back or not (I hope they put it back).

occurred after a death, eg. death announcement, obituary,

Make a backup just in case but I think the following should work for you:

View -> Master Lists -> Source

Click on the source you want to get rid of

Click on the “Combine…” button at the bottom of the screen

Click on the new version that you are keeping

Click again on the “Highlight…” button at the boom of the screen

Accept the confirmation message

Check the to make sure the new source is now used in place of the old.

I have recently discovered that I incorrectly used the wrong Source Template in
Source Writer and have several citations to that incorrect source. Therefore, I
have created a new correct source in the Master Source list. Can the referenced
incorrect Source in the Master Source list be merged with the correct source
and maintain all of its references? Everything that I have read in the help
files and the Legacy 8 manual refer to duplicates or sources that are exactly
the same. These two both use Source Writer templates, however, they are
different in that they use different source templates.

I am using the most recent version of Legacy 8 Deluxe. Any assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

I am using Build 385. The program has not been doing backups, either on
request (File > backup file) or when I exit the program after having made
changes. All the usual checks have been made including rebooting. I also
initially had this same problem with Build 367.
The solution is to reinstall the current version over itself.
If you watch the process closely you will see that it skips most of the files
but that it slows to copy several files. Does this mean that the initial
installation from the legacy8setup.exe file is not properly installing the
whole program? This may be worth a follow up from Support.
If your program shuts down without the delay to do the backup, check that your
last backup is dated and timed the same as your last .fdb file.

November 1898 is incorrect as a date format. I have gone through the
'customize changes' but it still isn't fixed. Do I have to close Legacy 8
before these changes take effect? If there is no fix, except individually
correcting them, can I still go back to Legacy 7.5 which is still on my

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0385

2014-01-21 Thread Darlene & Don Hicks
Last evening I downloaded Legacy 8.  Everyone in my file, 37,000 people, all
have date problems with a little red ! by it.  I am aware of the (from
1960)exp. change and have started changing that.  The program states that 21
November 1898 is incorrect as a date format.  I have gone through the
'customize changes' but it still isn't fixed.  Do I have to close Legacy 8
before these changes take effect?  If there is no fix, except individually
correcting them,  can I still go back to Legacy 7.5 which is still on my
computer?  Can a person have two Legacy files both Legacy 7.5 and Legacy
8.0.0385, and use them interchangeably?

If the Report includes the information that the individual concerned was
married to Joe Bloggs and includes Joe Bloggs's Birth and Death
dates/places then it is entirely correct that the Sources for that
information should be included. I don't know why you would want to
exclude them.

Just because it is found doesn't mean it does not belong in a To-Do list.
you could give it a title that would be appropriate and you can assign
reminder dates and priority and tag it. The To-do could be research more to

[LegacyUG] Legacy not backing up

2014-01-21 Thread Boyd Miller
I am using Build 385. The program has not been doing backups, either on
request (File > backup file) or when I exit the program after having
made changes. All the usual checks have been made including rebooting.
I also initially had this same problem with Build 367.
The solution is to reinstall the current version over itself.
If you watch the process closely you will see that it skips most of the
files but that it slows to copy several files. Does this mean that the
initial installation from the legacy8setup.exe file is not properly
installing the whole program? This may be worth a follow up from Support.
If your program shuts down without the delay to do the backup, check
that your last backup is dated and timed the same as your last .fdb file.

Some sort of option to list all the extraneous material one collects

that person (but not planned to appear in your reports probably), but
for your own research information. It would be really nice to have all

Jenny - yours notes sound just like mine. Sometimes they are fragments
of things I have found, sometimes they are excerpts I have done a

I agree that something like Evernote would work, but it sure would be

You can still do that in your notes! If you don't want them to appear in
reports then just surround them with the privacy brackets [[ some text ]]
and they will be visible in your file but will not appear in reports unless
you change the Privacy Options of the report. If you want the whole note
private just put the opening brackets and no closing brackets then
everything after them will be private.

Re: [LegacyUG] right order of shared events?

2014-01-21 Thread R G Strong-genes
Pam,
1. There is no set order to enter the family unit but is easier if you start
with the head of household if they are in your file. Any missing people can
be added while you are sharing the event.

2. If you have multiple people then you would:
a. Create your source and citation
b. Create the event and in the Notes section you would list the family
or the household members.
c. add the source.
d. Click on Share Event.
e. On the share event window click on "Add one or more people> Select
from the Name list".
f. Then on the right screen under Immediate Relatives put a check mark
next to those that are on the census.
g. If you need to edit any thing on that list then highlight which ever
entry needs correction and click the appropriate button.
h. If you need to add a child not listed then highlight one of the
children then click the button "Child List".
i. on this screen you can then click on either Add Brother or Add Sister
and it will open the individual edit screen ( note: I am writing this as I
do the steps, the first time I tried this it created an individual with no
first name on the child list screen I then had to highlight it and then
click edit, however after that I could not duplicate that action as it now
just opens the individual edit screen.) After that they appear on the
Child List screen click close.
j. then check them on the immediate Relatives Screen.
   k. If you need to share with some one else that is in your file then you
can navigate to them from the left side Name List and put a check next to
them. (ie if the census taker was a relative or someone in the file I would
share it and edit his role as census taker or enumerator.)
   l. Once you have all the ones checked click on the "Select" button.
   m. Save the Event. The event now appears on all those people you shared
it with. When you hover your mouse over the shared people icon it says how
many it is shared with and when you click on the icon it will open the
"People who share this event" window and then you can edit their roles or
them from there.

answer to 3. The event has to be saved after you have shared it. Be aware
that in step e above that if you choose the second choice>"Just enter the
name of the person" it will just add the name to the shared list but will
not add that person to your family file. If you need to add them to your
file then follow the steps above.

Subject: [LegacyUG] right order of shared events?

Hello,

I just started using shared events w/ v.8 build 385(unless it didn't
download correctly, another question in a different email tho), and have
these questions:
(hope these make sense)

1. Is there a particular "order" to enter the family unit from a census, for
example,

Head of household; ID his/her role "first", or does that matter?
Then, "enter" the children's names next(so they get a RIN), and then do
"share" after I enter each, OR do a "share" as I add each one?
Or?? Better way? I ask because. . . .

Is it SUPPOSED to automatically "sync" (list the event under the other
person's event) for each child as I add them, or ONLY to the head of
household?
The reason I ask is that there doesn't seem to be any consistency as if/how
the "share" "takes" and syncs to the other person automatically, when I add
share to another family member.
I noticed that it "synced" sometimes with the head of household, but haven't
done it consistently in the same order of adding names to know which times
it works. But it never syncs to another family member when I add names other
than head of household. I do notice it's easier to have the children's name
added first otherwise they don't get the RIN.

And, if it's NOT supposed to sync like this, how do people find is the
easiest to enter the census data to avoid duplicate time typing(I'm not
talking about sources, just entering the event info;)
It sure saved the typing time when it automatically synced. Otherwise, I
don't yet see the benefit of "shared" events?

2. Is it possible to click on 2-3 people from the master name list at the
same time to add to a "share" with the head of household at a time, or just
one? Seems to be just one, but maybe I'm missing something?
I can live with it if that's the only way it works, just curious though if
I'm doing something wrong?

3. Now this might be a glitch, but tonight when I went to an "individual"
child's "share" pop up box, it would let me add the "father" as a share, but
when it didn't sync, or show up on the father's event, when I tried to save,
and go out and click on the father to add the child as a "share", it keeps
bringing up the child's share screen and not the father's so I can't even
complete the share on the father's end for that child. ?did I do something
wrong here? I'm also having an issue with child's name "sticking"/showing
on the family view until I cl

If typing on my tablet wasn't such a pain I'd use Evernote on that instead
of pen & paper. I'm always jotting stuff down because it's quicker/easier
than trying to remember what I'm looking at in an image (for example) so I
can transfer the info to Legacy. I usually score through such info once
recorded and hang on to any paper with notes still unscored.

Sometimes my notes are all too brief, too! Once took *hours* trying to
re-find the record of a set of siblings whose names & dates of birth I'd
noted, but not recorded whose children they were!!

[LegacyUG] Merging Sources

2014-01-21 Thread Charles Apple
I have recently discovered that I incorrectly used the wrong Source Template
in Source Writer and have several citations to that incorrect source.
Therefore, I have created a new correct source in the Master Source list.
Can the referenced incorrect Source in the Master Source list be merged with
the correct source and maintain all of its references? Everything that I
have read in the help files and the Legacy 8 manual refer to duplicates or
sources that are exactly the same. These two both use Source Writer
templates, however, they are different in that they use different source
templates.

I am using the most recent version of Legacy 8 Deluxe. Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated.

Charles

Why not just use the General-to-Do feature to add those "research notes"

If there were a feature called "Tagged Notes," that could be used to
hold research information pertaining to all those with a certain tag
number, would that come close to what you are requesting?

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems indicator regarding birth gaps

2014-01-21 Thread singhals
*Assuming* the baptism was in one of the High Churches where
infant baptism is the norm, then 1789 ought to work
perfectly well for (a) eliminating the PP flag (b) ordering
children (c) most lists. Rationale: one doesn't not
baptism the unborn; if there is a baptism, there is a living
child, even if said child expires before the final Amen.

IF the baptism isn't in a church-group that practices infant
baptism, then you're stuck with (a) "bef 1789" (b) living
with the PP flags or (c) turning off the flags.

Rich,

Click the RESET ALL button at the bottom right corner of the Potential Problems
window. This will set everything back to the defaults including your page
setup in case something got messed up there. You will have to go back in and
re-do any options you might have changed.

Try saving the report as a pdf again.

Hello everyone,

I recently tried to create a PDF of my possible problem
list so I could review it and correct any errors regarding my genealogy.

When doing this I came up with a report that has 1843 pages. On each page it
has either one word or one sentence.

Am I somehow not correctly adjusting my settings so that I will have my report
show up properly?

I look forward to everyone's possible suggestions as to how I can correct this?

I should also say I'm still using the 7.5 version of Legacy.

Thanks to everyone!

[LegacyUG] Line Spacing in Printed Reports

2014-01-21 Thread Mary Young
Using 8.0.0.385 (current version), and looking at Individual Chart>Report
Options>Page setup.

Why are there two sections controlling Line Spacing?

i.e., Line Spacing with 4 radio buttons for Really tight, Tight, Normal and
Loose

plus, an input box for “Space lines at ... percent of font size (normally
110%)”

I’ve played around with these settings, but can’t make sense of them,
grateful for any insight.

But that "more permanent fashion" needs a place in Legacy. Something
that contains notes that may or may not need to go into the events for
that person, but helps you in research. The problem with using the
"Research Notes" is that it would be very difficult to organize those
notes in a useful fashion.

I see now that the report uses different standards for including sources. For
spouses all sources for name, birth, chr/bapt/death/burial are included. For
children only sources for unspecified or for their name are cited.

I think the different rules on what is used to cite as a source is a bug and I
am going to submit a problem report on that.

My suggestion for the "standard" is going to be that both spouses and children
use the child source rule and only sources cited for "unspecified" and Name
will be cited. The unspecified entry is for those users who do not cite sources
for a specific event but only for the person. Some older software also did not
link sources to specific facts only to the individual.

But those are legitimate sources that apply to the spouse and they are
being cited for his name where he appears in the report.

Why would you not want sources applicable to the spouse not being cited
for the spouse?

They are attached to the entry for the spouse name. The marriage source
citation is correct - it applies to both. For example I'm looking at my GGG
Grandparents - for both, the birth and death citations appear for the spouse of
the individual. I wouldn't perhaps have noticed except in this case I have many
citations for the death of my GGG Grandfather and these all appear in the
individual report for my GGG Grandmother.

I experience the same effect with sources. I have some basic sources I use as
templates and when I edit one, entering information relating to an individual,
I save it as a new source. After completing the source entry and saving it,
occasionally the original "template" source shows with no information and if
you copy it to enter for another event you are copying a blank source. Other
times, upon saving, it is populated with the correct information and can be
copied and pasted as usual. In any case, leaving then reopening the source
window the source is correctly populated. It is intermittent with no
discernible trigger so I have not yet reported this bug as I can not re-produce
it at will.

RE: [LegacyUG] Research notes

2014-01-21 Thread Michele/Support
Anne,

I use the General Notes for biographical information (I try to write at least a
short biography on each of my direct line ancestors and each of their siblings)
and I use the Research Notes for my general theories, trains of thought etc.
I also will write some of this stuff in the event notes, birth notes, death
notes, marriage notes etc . This is where you will find simple proof
statements. I like doing it this way so that my Research Notes only contain
the current things I am working on and they don't get too cluttered.

Let's say I have two different birth dates. I will input the one I decide to
be the "correct" one and in the birth notes I will detail the conflicting
evidence and explain why I believe one to be the correct one (proof statement).
If it is more involved than a sentence or a paragraph then we are talking a
proof argument or case study which usually requires lists, tables, graphics,
footnoting etc. In that case I will write it up in MS Word and then attach the
document to the individual as a pdf (I use a pdf because if I share it is more
likely the recipient can open a pdf than a MS document).

How do people record research for a specific fact in Legacy? For example
conflicting information about a date/place of birth? I am not keen on Geoff's
"alternate birth" method. I would prefer something like the notes area for a
fact being tabbed "general" and "research". This could be used to record and
resolve conflicting information and would keep all relevant research for that
fact together.

RE: [LegacyUG] Research notes

2014-01-21 Thread Alan Pereira
I have created a variation on my main file called "My Family - unrelated" in
that I add research notes against individuals that have yet to be verified as
part of my family. If they are, I move them using split screen, otherwise I
leave them there with notes showing that they are definitely unrelated.
This file, I have found to be helpful for others who are not part of my tree
but claim kinship.

These are very good ideas - much better than my method of jotting down notes on
a bit of paper as I research and then losing the paper or not having a clue
what the notes refer to! I shall probably now adopt this method.

BUT... Very often I am noting down findings of people who might be related or
might not. I don't want to add them as unrelated individuals because i don't
want to "clutter up" my file in that way. What I would like - and it's
something a lot of people have expressed a wish for in the past - is to have a
"Universal Notes" section in Legacy which relates to the whole file and not any
one individual. Better still if, like the Notes for Individuals, it had 2 tabs
- General and Research.

I use OneNote to copy book and document references and take to the Record
Office etc on my phone., but I still copy and paste the relevant items into
the research notes, it gets too complicated otherwise, if the notes relate
to more than one person I copy it to the male person at the top of that
line and then when confirmed I edit and add to General notes of the relevant
person, or people.

These are very good ideas - much better than my method of jotting down
notes on a bit of paper as I research and then losing the paper or not
having a clue what the notes refer to! I shall probably now adopt this
method.

BUT... Very often I am noting down findings of people who might be
related or might not. I don't want to add them as unrelated individuals
because i don't want to "clutter up" my file in that way. What I would
like - and it's something a lot of people have expressed a wish for in the
past - is to have a "Universal Notes" section in Legacy which relates to
the whole file and not any one individual. Better still if, like the
Notes for Individuals, it had 2 tabs - General and Research.

RE: [LegacyUG] ToDo list printing

2014-01-21 Thread Jo Poi
Found it, the reason I couldn't before is because on my v .381 it is
'greyed out' , but as you say it appears to relate to the notes

On the “What to Include”, about in the middle. It’s a little

the right. I think they go as a set.

Where is the “Number of Blank Lines to include” setting ?

I can see problems with the “Don’t split a task over a page
break” option. If I change it once, it works OK, but trying to
change it back does back not seem to work. However, when I change the
“Number of Blank Lines to include” setting, it then picks up the
current setting of the “Don’t’ split …” option.
I can’t speak to the sort order on the File No / File ID. I’ve
not used that field in my data, and I don’t find it in use on any of
the To Do items in the Sample database. However, the label for it
appears in the middle of each To Do item in the report – after the
individuals information and before the To Do details, so I don’t
understand your comment about it appearing to relate to the next To Do
item.

Hmmm looks like nobody prints out a ToDo list.

Could some kind person please try to replicate the problems I am have
found or not, just to prove either it is me doing something wrong or
that there is a bug in the ToDo list print.

Has anyone successfully printed out a ToDo list ?

I am finding that:
It will not sort in order to the file no entry
The file no entry appears as though it relates to the next ToDo
I tick 'don't split a task over a page break' .it does

to name but a few that affect me at present
