I've never heard of that one. To me, MDI = Multiple Document Interface.

Where a program allows multiple child windows within the main window. For
example, a proper editor (not Notepad) can have multiple files open within the
one instance of the program. With Notepad, you get multiple instances i.e main
windows.

RE: [LegacyUG] Fixed Fonts, Destroyed Columns?

2014-03-04 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Jay,

I’ve switched to HTML for emphasis.

The included hidden formatting (or possibly HTML code) is not necessarily a
fault of Legacy. When you copy the information from a web site (Ancestry.com)
it has to deal with what you are pasting to the notes - thus, where you are
copying it from.

What browser are you using? I use three different browsers, Internet Explorer,
Opera, and FireFox depending on what it is I am copying, and to where. I
primarily use FireFox to copy from Ancestry to Legacy as it does not include
the HTML coding that Internet Explorer does.

Here is a sample output from Internet Explorer after
copying/pasting/saving/reopening to Legacy Notes:

1861 England Census

This is from FireFox, no changes:

No touchups to either - the Internet Explorer info looks even worse in Legacy
Notes and the Firefox notes look much better - in your designated Legacy font.

Copying to Word may be another matter, as the Internet Explorer info contains
all the formatting codes to show the information in all its glory including
color and fonts - and, in this case, it is also in a table.

An additional bonus in FireFox vs Explorer, is selecting the data as FireFox
displays the data in a table format allowing you to copy the information very
differently. In FireFox, open a census page/view others on page - if you click
in the first 'cell' and drag the mouse down the page you will highlight
everything to be copied - just as in Internet Explorer. This time start in the
second box, hold down the Ctrl key and click/drag the mouse - the results are
very different - you can select the rows and columns of interest. Release the
mouse button, hold down the control key and click on any of the cells - you can
select/deselect any/multiple cell(s) with a simple click.

For example, this Families info from Firefox just by using the mouse and
dragging across the info to be copied:

View Record William Cox Mary A 1817 Meckabourne, Kent,
England Head Ash, Kent

View Record Mary A Cox William 1825 Wickham, Kent,

Mary A 1858 Ash, Kent, England Daughter Ash,

View Record Harriet Cox William,

Mary A 1859 Ash, Kent, England Daughter Ash,

Using the Ctrl key and a quick editing by deselecting cells (parents) before
copy/pasting. This can be ‘prettied up’ through added tabs, or spacing.

William Cox 1817 Meckabourne, Kent, England Head

Re: [LegacyUG] Children not showing up in Family group report index

2014-03-04 Thread Ron Taylor
Just the family of Asa Clark Brown shows two problems with the Name Index
instead of all of his descendants with a Focus Group.
The report produces 6 pages.
Check the name index under surname Brown...only Asa Clark and Nathan are listed.
Notice also under Crosby...Clara Etta is listed twice with RINs 91 and 92.
(David Clark Brown, her spouse, is RIN 92)
Same for Frost...Elmina is listed twice with RINs 69 and 74.  (William C.
Brown, her spouse, is RIN 74)
Same for Goodhue...Jane is listed twice with RINs 72 and 76.  (Joshua Marsden
Brown, her spouse, is RIN 76)
Same for Rand...Laura Etta is listed twice with RINs 71 and 73.  (John W.
Brown, her spouse, is RIN 73)

There may be other errors, but these are quite easy to replicate.

Re: [LegacyUG] Fixed Fonts, Destroyed Columns?

2014-03-04 Thread JV Leavitt
Jay,

I think I do the same thing you do with the census summaries, but I get
them mostly from FamilySearch. You're right that if you copy and paste
from Ancestry, you are obliged to close the Notes window, and open it
again, so that the Legacy default font formatting comes into use.

In FamilySearch census summary windows, there is a "Copy" button, which
if you use, and then paste into the Notes window in Legacy, you get
close to what you probably want, and the font size comes out okay, I
suppose because I've set my minimum screen font size to 10, and also
to10 in the Legacy Notes window.

I had some trouble with my Notes formatting being lost until I figured
out that the Notes Zoom button was allowing me to set a Text Font Size.
It appears to always remember it, and I don't lose the formatting now.
Even if I change the Notepad window size, it does not affect the
formatting -- it will re-word-wrap the lines if necessary.

I don't suppose that this wouldn't change if used in other ways, such as
in this email message.

If you copy your Notes into WordPad (which I do from time to time, while
I am making use of the information), with it set to Arial and font size
10, the formatting will be the same as it is in your Legacy notes.

Here is an example copied from one of my Legacy Notes windows (I add
little notes of my own):

*1870 Census -- Turner, Androscoggin, Maine, United States*
Household GenderAge Birthplace
Lark D Merrill M47 Maine
A Melvina Merrill F 42 Maine = Amanda Melvina
Lothrop
Willard LothropM40 Maine = Amanda's brother,
an invalid

NOTE: Next door is family of George T. Merril & Lorette &
Georgianna A., and next to them is the family of Alvah and Hannah C.
Merrill with child Nathan -- also including what looks like maybe
the Merrill father, Luther Merrill, age 82.

Citing this Record:
"United States Census, 1870," index and images, FamilySearch
(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M6DZ-RQT : accessed 25 Feb
2014), Lark D Merrill, Maine, United States; citing p. , family 259,
NARA microfilm publication M593, FHL microfilm 000552036.

I don't know how this will look in your email program, but it looks
fairly good before sending it. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

2014-03-04 Thread David Abernathy
There are very few programs that will make or even open these files.
The WMF is a video file that some sites use by very few.

There are many more NON priority type of file. Yes there are some Wizards that
come with scanners that use the pdf by default, and every one of them need to
be trashed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0 For MACs

2014-03-04 Thread Ron Taylor
I have a Macbook Pro 15" running OSX 10.9.2 and Parallels 9.0.24172.  Windows
XP SP3 runs in the virtual machine provided by Parallels.  Legacy 8.0.0.412
runs great in this scenario.  I plan to update to Windows 7 or 8 soon because
Microsoft is officially discontinuing support for Windows XP after 8 Apr 2014.
I've been using Legacy in this combination for several years.  Will Legacy work
on a Macintosh?  Every day.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Back-up unsuccessful

2014-03-04 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Ruth,

I had not used the feature to burn directly to disc, so I tried it out to see
if it does work. I am using Windows 8.1 Pro, and I don’t exactly get a pop-up
balloon to say burn, but I can burn a disc. Your version of Windows may do
things a little differently. Legacy makes a backup to a temporary folder, then
Windows takes over for the burn to disc, so it shouldn’t have anything to do
with the Legacy build.

You can backup your data to your hard drive/SD card/USB drive then burn a disc
using other software, or use the SD card/USB drive to copy/transfer the data to
another computer. There are other ways like networking and cloud storage to do
this as well. I prefer the SD card (or USB drive) as they are cheap and
reusable.I keep one locked away, and regularly send one to a relative for
even more security. It is also quicker to copy/transfer using the SD card.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Back-up unsuccessful

I am using Legacy 8 Deluxe program that was installed Dec 28, 2013. Yesterday
I updated to the 8.0.0.412 build on my desktop and laptop. I tried creating a
Back-Up Disk so that I can restore and update the data info onto my laptop.

I am not able to create a back-up disk on the desktop. I feel I am following
the directions on Legacy Family tree site and it just remains a blank disk.
Previously you would get a "balloon" to click on to burn the info onto the
disk. I am not getting that now.

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you. Ruth

Sherry, et al,
Most software I use will pop up an informative dialog when there is an
update with a button to click if you want to do the update. Why can't
Legacy do likewise?

Of course having the blurb showing the most recent version and the
currently installed version with the update link on the home page should be
maintained.

RE: [LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

The issue here seems to be that embedded images are regularly transported via a
PDF file. I have certainly been supplied with many scanned images and documents
that were created as PDF files. Depending on context, I sometimes convert them
to a JPG copy for ease of display, but such duplication into another format is
somewhat untidy from a database point of view.

RE: Re[2]: [LegacyUG] Name List - Build 412

2014-03-04 Thread Bob Austen
Cathy, If you go to the Legacy Home page, you will see “Updates” there – the
header (“Updates” ) is a link, click on it and it will check for the update.
It does not always automatically show you that there is an update available –
even in version 7.5

Build 412 works but there seems to be a lot of familiar things that are now
missing, as you’ve seen from the postings. Hopefully they will bring these
back. I believe 412 has more updates for Family Search users – if you use
that, then the update is probably worthwhile.

My last message was meant to be private – though I do get frustrated as it
showed.

The auto update reminder is not coming up inside of Legacy like it used to in
V7. When I go to Legacy Home from inside of the software, the box on the right
says that I have the latest update .397. No mention of update .412. Sounds
like it's best to hold off for awhile until some features are ironed out.

How about: Because PDF pervades the 'Net and that's about the only non-MS format
that people are familiar with.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Update Procedure

2014-03-04 Thread Sherry/Support
There is no Legacy Home button. There's a Legacy Home tab but no button.

In earlier versions, there was a "Home" button on the far left of the
toolbar which took you to the Preferred Startup Family. A lot of
people were confused with the Legacy Home tab and the Home button when
we'd give instructions so Ken changed that button to the Startup
Family on the "My Toolbar" in v8.

It wouldn't go on the File ribbon since it has nothing to do with
Files but has to do with going to the Preferred Startup Family set in
Options > Customize 1.3 (You can also set the Startup Family by
clicking on the icon on the Options ribbon)

It would seem more rational to me to have the "Legacy Home" button on

Could it be in both places? And maybe also in the "Help" menu?

[LegacyUG] Fixed Fonts, Destroyed Columns?

2014-03-04 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
Mike,

Thanks for: "Consolas is a nice, clean, mono-spaced font".

I think Courier is also a fixed font. It would be nice if Legacy
identified all the fixed fonts. And I would prefer Legacy using only
fixed fonts.

When I copy and paste census info from Ancestry.com, Legacy includes a
lot of hidden format info. That makes a mess after the data is pasted in
and saved and then re-opened. It would be nice if Legacy worked like
Notepad and removed all or most of the formatting when pasting the info
into Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0 For MACs

2014-03-04 Thread Paul Gray
 Priscilla,

The short answer is that there is no such thing as legacy for Mac. It is a
Windows program.

In order to use Legacy on a Mac you must also install windows on the Mac. There
are several ways to do this and others on the group know more about that and
will likely be able to provide more
detail than I can.

I just bought my first MAC. Had Legacy 8.0 on previous computer and know I

move/convert/use (I'm not sure what correct term is) previous Legacy Windows

Yesterday I updated to the 8.0.0.412 build on my desktop and laptop. I tried
creating a Back-Up Disk so that I can restore and update the data info onto
my laptop

I am not able to create a back-up disk on the desktop. I feel I am
following the directions on Legacy Family tree site and it just remains a blank

onto the disk. I am not getting that now.

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong? Any help would be

RE: [LegacyUG] Best way to rename pdf files used within Legacy?

2014-03-04 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Mike is correct. Consider the fact that a Microsoft Word Document can also
contain JPEG images, trying to add a .DOC or .DOCX file to the Picture Center
is the same as trying to add a .PDF. They are NOT images but rather containers
that may or may not have images inside of them. The Picture Center is working
just fine in this regard.

It does.

PDF=Portable Document Format.

No mention of pictures. The fact that a PDF file can contain one or more images
does not make it a picture file. The sooner that Legacy prevents PDF files
being attached as Pictures, the better.

You probably saw Sherry’s reply regarding the build number – which we knew
anyway. I had kept earlier versions of Legacy and still have v7.5 installed –
of course that’s a big issue to use the current data file after it was
converted to run on v8. Thanks for the offer of 397 – I’ll bear with the
current one for now and see how they make out with that. Maybe I’m asking too
much – I expect the new releases to be an Upgrade, not a Downgrade.

Maybe the number jump is the number of bugs fixed – 15?

Not L8 only L7 and earlier can be downloaded from their download site.

I have the download of 397 but it’s far too big to e-mail at 63.7Mb would you
like me to upload it using Send this file?

I think what I may do in future is to download the standard version and install
that as the update then at least I can go backwards in issue.

Including the “F” key to go to Search.

Also missing are the ages of the couple after entering the marriage date. Now
you have to click in the “Status Date” box, then back in the “Marr Date” box or

Mike and Mike,

Note that the Help file for Shortcut Keys does not list the single key shortcut
"S" but it worked in prior versions. Based on several other emails, it looks
like somebody caused all of these single key shortcuts to stop functioning in
the current release 8.0.0.412. See the Help file for the other ones including
"I" that you mentioned.

Re: [LegacyUG] Name List - Build 412

2014-03-04 Thread Brian/Support
It has nothing whatever to do with number of fixes. The version numbers
are applied automatically when the programmers generate a new copy. Some
are only used by the programmers, others are sent to our Beta test group
and finally the general users get a version. The jump in numbers only
show how many times the program was generated since the previous release.

That's odd. Sorry I can't help, then.

The bullet, by the way, indicates that it's a SourceWriter Source.

Re: [LegacyUG] Name List - Build 412

2014-03-04 Thread Sherry/Support
Even the beta testers will see a gap between builds they get.
They're not really "release" numbers as such but build numbers
indicating the different builds the programmers work on.

RE: [LegacyUG] Name List - Build 412

2014-03-04 Thread Ron Ferguson
Bob,

There is new puzzle about the gaps in the version numbers. The programmers may
well make several new versions before release, especially if a number of issues
are being addressed.

I agree Geoff. Curious about the jump from 387 to 412 – maybe 412 is a Beta,
it seems quite “buggy”. Is there a way to get back to build 387?

I think I’ll wait to update as previously a few working features now seem to
not be! Maybe some beta testing of updates is needed before release!?

The revision list for the last issue (421) is better and shows more fixes but
still doesn’t show ALL fixes.

Also missing are the ages of the couple after entering the marriage date. Now
you have to click in the “Status Date” box, then back in the “Marr Date” box or
“in” box. It will also show after putting in the marriage date and
exiting/re-entering the Marriage/Relationship Information screen.

It does.

PDF=Portable Document Format.

No mention of pictures. The fact that a PDF file can contain one or more images
does not make it a picture file. The sooner that Legacy prevents PDF files being
attached as Pictures, the better.

will now tend to only use JPEG files unless absolutely necessary. At least
