Re: [LegacyUG] Seeking suggestions for sorting through a database mess

2015-10-16 Thread R G Strong-genes
Charlene,
That is what I thought. So the best way would be to clean up the one he sent
you back as far as how he entered data and such to your standards of how you
want your data formatted, ie places and names and such. If he did not enter any
sources then you could create a new source for his research and then tag all
the new people that he entered and then just use the advanced sourcing for the
tagged people and put it under the general source for them. You could also tag
them by their creation date ie all those entered after the date you gave him
the file. Once you have the database to your liking then you can use the
intellemerge function to merge them together. For more info on how to do that
see the help file on intellemerge.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. In my mind GEDCOM isn't a database in the same way
that a .csv file isn't a spreadsheet. I sent him the Legacy files.

[LegacyUG] Census event vs source

2015-10-16 Thread Kathy Meyer
I haven't worked on my family history much over the last couple of years,
at least not enough to remember the most useful way to record some things,
so I apologize up front if this is too basic - but there are always new
users out there right? :-)

I'm finding things I sourced very poorly 'back when I started' (haha!)
Somewhere along the line I did start to use sources and events more fully
and I like creating the Census event and including ALL of the details in
the event notes (BTW - I L.O.V.E. the event sharing option that I just
learned to use) I include the census page image in the Media portion of
the event itself.

Prior to using Events for that, I simply "sourced' entries, like birth,
name, etc. individually with the Census SOURCE so I would know exactly
where I got that information, which makes lots of sense to me; otherwise,
if I got the birth year (for instance) from the 1920 census, I would have
to guess that I got it from the Census EVENT and then go check it. So I
know I need to have that SOURCE with the census information for each field
that it applies to.

S.right now, as I'm going through these old ones, I am doing BOTH.
I'm creating the Census EVENT and then adding the Census SOURCE to the
event itself (otherwise it wouldn't have all the nitty gritty source
details about where it was found etc) and then copying that source to the
clipboard and adding it to the applicable fields, which is seems like too
much but also seems necessary so that I know where information came from.
If I were creating an individual from scratch, it would be easier because I
could attach the source to all the fields I guess.

And I don't mind the extra work itself, I just feel like I may be putting
too much in for the sake of reports and such. If I ever get everything
cleaned up well enough, I do want to turn it into book format to share.
Believe it or not, I actually have a family member who does NOT own a
computer.

Sorry for the length of this; I would love to get your suggestions. thanks!

Kathy

2015-10-16 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Charlene,

I'm not quite with it today and hadn't read the whole thread.

Having your file in Legacy 7.5 and his in Legacy 8 will probably
simplify your issues of comparing files and adding relevant data.
In his file, you could have tags for different things verified and a tag
when you finished comparing someone.
eg tag 1: verified birth tag 2: verified death ... tag 9 done
You can label the tags on the Advanced tag page.
You might want similar tags in your file - at least a tag = I've
finished checking this one against Dad's.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Combining two family lines

2015-10-16 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi James,

You import one file into the other.
File - Import - Legacy file
Make sure you have current backups of both before you start so if you do
go wrong you can start again with more experience.

It's after the import that you merge the people who are the same. This
shouldn't be hard in a small file as you'll know the people in common.
You may want to start by doing a Manual Merge of yourself, if you're in
both files, to get an easy intro to the Merge dialogue.

The difference between a Manual Merge and a Find Duplicates is that in
Manual Merge you choose the two people in the file that are really the
same person and in Find Duplicates, Legacy presents possible pairs
according to the set criteria.

I never used the merge feature, but how can I merge one entire line into the larger one?

Allow me to make one final suggestion to everything that Cathy has already
mentioned. BEFORE you install Legacy v8 on your computer, make a backup of your
v7.5 family file. You might even want to become paranoid and save that backup
to a flash drive or some other place off of your computer. In this manner,
then you should be assured of no problems with the version 8 installation
somehow updating your one and only copy of the v7.5 family file and then
there’d be no means of ever opening it again in the v7.5 program. Better safe
than sorry.

Charlene,

Just to add to what Chap has said.

You just need to install Legacy 8 to the defaults. It doesn't overwrite version
7 etc. It installs to the Program Files whereas earlier versions by default
installed to C:\Legacy and if you changed it, you had to avoid the Program
Files folder.
Earlier versions of Legacy had a default Data folder under the program folder:
C:\Legacy\Data
Legacy 8 has default Data folder in Documents. It sets up a folder:
Documents\Legacy Family Tree\
In this folder is a folder for Data (which you don't have to use but might as
well).
However there is a vital folder in this Legacy Family Tree folder. It's called
_AppData and it contains your settings. You can't move it or rename the Legacy
Family Tree folder. It will just be recreated with defaults when you reopen
Legacy 8.

Otherwise I can try installing v8 on my laptop which doesn't

Thanks for reminding folks. I've been in IT for over 30 years; I'm paranoid
about this. I always made a local backup before doing any sort of installs
or upgrades. I also automagically backup all my data to the cloud; really
convenient. Belts and suspenders.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report and Error 380

2015-10-16 Thread Forefathers Research
Is there a calendar database in Legacy or some such? The reason I ask is
that the error is an Access database issue and always occurs just after i
have keyed a date into (or tabbed away from) the date field in the Add/Edit
Event dialog. That suggests to me that some date lookup is being performed
at that point, and failing for some reason.

I've contact Support multiple times about this issue but never been offered
a proper solution.

I have tried everything on the website several times. Since it occurs on
every Legacy file I ever create, and sometimes within the first 10 minutes
of working with a new file, there has to be more to it than Support are
willing to accept. I cannot carry on wasting my life running File
Maintenance several times a day.

I have recently uninstalled and reinstalled, without success.

A new laptop is being delivered this week for my wife so I will try
installing on there to see if the problem occurs on that machine too.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census event vs source

2015-10-16 Thread Elizabeth Verchio

Kathy, not sure what are you asking!
So, I will offer some hopefully words of wisdom gained from 20+
  year of ancestry research.
Cleaning up data is always a good idea.  Legacy offers several
different reports and it depends on your personal preference as to
how you want reports to include / to look.  Example, I was scolded
by an experienced TMG user that my reports included too much
information from Census.  Personally, I like all the information
about the family group to be in my reports, that way I am more
confident I am recording the correct family of interest (though I
have been wrong).  I have learned to hold my ancestry loosely so
that when proven wrong it does not hurt so much when I have to
delete what was believed to be a direct line.
Using Legacy's Source Writer is always a good idea - don't get
hung-up on the changes  that have come about through the years.  I
do most (99.9%) my research on ancestry.com (copy/paste/download
jpgs) and am careful to note all relevant information so that
anyone looking at my notes/database would be able to find the
source/record referenced.  The few occurrences where I have actual
source (photos, Bibles, birth/death/marriage certificates) I am
careful to create a source that indicates where the actual source
is at the time (though that may/will change with time).  I  too
like to create a Census Event in the timeline of a persons life as
that is a point in time where a person and or family can be
pin-pointed at a particular place at a particular time.  If the
Census gives an address, I will create another Event that list
Residence at that address with the Census as Source.  Most of my
family is rural so Residence/Address usually means a road name or
Township/Range and sometimes only a Post Office which does not
always mean they actually live in the County where the Post Office
  is located.
Not sure any of this help.  I too was once a
  newbeeflyingbytheseatofmypantswithoutanyguidancewantingtoknowmyfamilyhistory.

Kathy, keep asking questions, keep digging, keep researching.  The
journey is worth all the setbacks and disinterested persons your
encounter along the way.  I do family research for me and me
alone.  If I can share something with others I consider it a
bonus!  Unfortunately there are A LOT of children living on planet
  earth today.

I'm finding things I sourced very poorly 'back when I
started' (haha!)  Somewhere along the line I did start to use
sources and events more fully and I like creating the Census

Prior to using Events for that, I simply "sourced' entries,
like birth, name, etc. individually with the Census SOURCE so
I would know exactly where I got that information, which makes
lots of sense to me; otherwise, if I got the birth year (for
instance) from the 1920 census, I would have to guess that I
got it from the Census EVENT and then go check it.  So I know
I need to have that SOURCE with the census information for
each field that it applies to.

S.right now, as I'm going through these old ones, I
am doing BOTH.  I'm creating the Census EVENT and then adding
the Census SOURCE to the event itself (otherwise it wouldn't
have all the nitty gritty source details about where it was
found etc) and then copying that source to the clipboard and
adding it to the applicable fields, which is seems like too

came from.   If I were creating an individual from scratch, it

Re: [LegacyUG] Census event vs source

2015-10-16 Thread Cathy Pinner
Kathy,

I do both. I guess you can argue that a census isn't an event but it's
something that our ancestors and we are involved in at a particular
place. It most definitely is a source.
One reason it's handy to enter census as an event is that it's so much
easier to check that you have found the person on every relevant census.

However, when it comes to reporting, you may or may not want to include
the census events. This is a choice you can make at the time. You can
exclude all census events from a report and leave them just as sources
by editing the Census Event Definition. You just check the Private
checkbox on the Event Definition screen - reached either from View -
Master Lists - Event Definition - Census OR when editing a Census event,
click the Edit Event Definition button. Then when you run a report,
don't include Master Events that are Private. They are omitted by
default so you'd have to change the Privacy options for the Report.

I usually include the bcensus as an event, because it gives both residence
and occupation, for which I would otherwise have to give make two separate
events, giving the same census as source for each.

Hmmm... if an Access database issue, shouldn't we all be having that
problem? Seems good that you can pinpoint the exact issue. Hoping there's
a solution and the new computer is all you hope it to be.
