Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Hints - Query

Thank you Cathy, that has answered the question admirably. I have subs to
Ancestry and FMP (and yes I do realise you can initiate a search on any
site). I will take note of when free days come up for other web sites -
thank you for the idea.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 - Hints - Query

2017-05-09 Thread Cathy Pinner

Marion,

The websites have to provide an API (Application Programming Interface)
in order for the Hints to be provided. These 4 are the only ones to have
done that.

Note that the Hints can be helpful by alerting you to the existence of a
source even if you don't have a subscription. MyHeritage Record Match
hints are often to the FamilySearch databases so you can go there and
search for it.

FamilySearch hints on the other hand are not coming from their databases
but from data they have hinted to their FamilySearch tree (and only then
if you have

entered the FamilySearch ID in Legacy).

Also there are free days on many subscription websites so you can take
note their are Hints you want to follow up and make the most of that
free time. At least I know FindMyPast and Ancestry have free days
regularly.

Note in Legacy 8 and 9 (and earlier versions) you can initiate a search
for the current person on any site you like. Some searches are provided
but you can add your own. Internet - Search Internet.

Hi Jane,

The core parts of legacy are in the drop box, not the whole program.

You cannot run Legacy from a Drop Box or a Cloud account.

The main fdb file and a few bits and pieces are in the db. Everything else is
where it should be so that it can work with Windows.

I hope this makes sense.

I don't understand is why it got worse with Legacy 9 and why it doesn't

This is something I've dealt with for years when I was using Win7 and then
again after a fresh install of Win10 and talked with Ken, one of the
programmers, about it. He can't duplicate it and doesn't know what's going
on with it. And yes, I've seen this only with Legacy as well.

I've only seen it with v8. I used to use that version on my secondary
monitor all the time. I haven't been using v9 on the secondary monitor, so
it hasn't been an issue.

If I open v8 on the secondary monitor, I don't have any problems with the
windows going partially off screen.

I have previously tried Brian's suggestion of deleting the Legacy2.usr file
many times so Legacy can create a fresh one, but that hasn't helped at all.

It sounds like you do have both monitors on though. Have you tried playing
around with the settings for dual monitor display? Could your resolution be
part of the culprit if they're completely disappearing? I use a higher
resolution.

And no, I wouldn't expect a "child" window to show on the taskbar, task
manager, or in alt-tab, except for a couple of instances where the
programmers have broken them out to be independent, such as Legacy
Charting, File > Export and a couple of other places.
