Re: [LegacyUG] Research Notes

2018-08-30 Thread Brian Kelly
It is probably easier to just use Options > Print from the search
results list.
I set mine with two Rows, on Row 1 I have the default grid fields of
RIN, Surname, given Name and Sex.

On Row two I have the research notes set to a column width of 7.49 inches.

Re: [LegacyUG] Installing & Running Legacy using Parallels v14.0.0

2018-08-30 Thread Leon Chapman
You need to run Windows in the isolated mode from the Mac side. Then, the file
locations for Legacy are just like a standard Windows only machine.

If you do not isolate Windows from the Mac side, Legacy will try to find files
on a network and you will have problems.

Mary,

Can you say more about what the problem is?
I think you are saying you've upgraded from Legacy 8 to Legacy 9
Then in Legacy 9 you can't read the Potential Problems

Where exactly can't you read the Potential Problems?
Is it because they're too small or unclear in some other way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Research Notes

2018-08-30 Thread Linda Greethurst
Go to SEARCH, then FIND, then DETAILED SEARCH.
Primary Condition:
Look for: INDIVIDUAL
Where to look: click on arrow, scroll down to NOTES-RESEARCH
How to look: click on arrow, select NOT EQUAL TO
What to look for: leave empty
Double check that the little box in front of Second Condition is NOT CHECKED
Select at the lower left: Clear List before this search
Then, click on the box CREATE LIST

This should bring up a list of all the names who DO have research notes.
When looking at the resulting list, make sure that the radio button in
front of RESEARCH has been selected. This method has worked for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Parallels v14 will not install Legacy Family Tree

2018-08-30 Thread Leon Chapman
Qwen:

Here is my latest news on Parallels 14 and the install process:

Ok, I have a new update on the Legacy 9 install on Parallels 14.

On my iMac which did not have Legacy 9 GR or Legacy 9 Beta installed --

I downgraded from Parallels 14 to 13.3.2 – you just download their install
file for v13.3.2 and reinstall over v14.

Using Parallels 13.3.2:
1. I installed Legacy GR - 9.0.0.226
a. It again stopped about 92% thru the install process and the process
became unresponsive
b. I left the installer process open for about 10 minutes, and it finally
finished the install.
c. Legacy 9 GR is running just fine under Parallels 14.0.0.

Next, I reinstalled Parallels 14.0.0 from scratch over Parallels 13.3.2
1. I then installed the Legacy Beta – 9.0.0.253
a. The install went perfect – no delays during install
b. Legacy Beta 9.0.0.253 is running just fine.

I then went to my MacBook Pro – It had Parallels 13.3.2 installed and had
Legacy Beta installed.
1. I upgraded to Parallels 14.0.0
2. This Windows VM already had Legacy 9 Beta 9.0.0.253 installed
3. Legacy is running just fine.

Bottom line, it is ok for everyone to install Parallels 14.0.0 if they
choose.
Legacy should install and run just fine, just give it some time to finish
the install process if it stops during the install.

Another side note: Be sure to Isolate Windows from the Mac or you will have
problems with file locations that act like you are running Legacy on a
network and it cannot find file locations. Here is how to Isolate Windows
from Mac to exclude Mac OS X influence:

(Virtual Machine > Configure… > Options > Security > check on Isolate Mac
from Windows)I

If you have problems, here is a Parallels Help page:
https://kb.parallels.com/112983

Good luck with using Parallels 14.0.0 on the Mac!

Re: [LegacyUG] How to merge two Legacy files now that two people on different trees have become the same person?

2018-08-30 Thread Alan Denham
Hi Jenny,

When I say completed, my aim was to find all of my ancestors who arrived in
Australia from the early 1800s onwards then trace each of their origins back
to where they came from, and go back one generation further to around
great-great grandparent level. I have been able to do this with the
exception of one other great-grandfather, a Patrick Francis Jordon,
allegedly born Westminster ~1848 but of Irish parents. Four elderly
relatives have been researching him for 20 years plus, so I don't expect
that we will find his origins other than through DNA, for which we have all
taken Family Finder tests. The DNA worked for one other mystery
great-grandfather but eight months on, Patrick remains a mystery.

Cheers, Alan

Re: [LegacyUG] How to merge two Legacy files now that two people on different trees have become the same person?

2018-08-30 Thread Alan Denham
Thanks Chris. Along with below and another email from Curtis, I was able to
merge the two separate files with success. I took your advice and renamed both
files with new names first, then merged the smaller one into the larger one,
then renamed it again. Certainly beats pounding the keyboard and re-entering it
all manually! Cheers, Alan

Hi

I assume that, apart from the common person, the two trees are totally
different. In that case there should be no issue with merging the two files,
but you will probably then have two trees within the new file since the common
person might not get merged. Then just do a manual merge on one of them and
select the other one manually, and decide which information to merge.

Of course, take backups of both files before you start and make a copy of one
of them to use for the merge. That way you keep the current files and get a new
merged file until you are happy it is complete.

Chris

Hi,

BROWN. Based on three DNA test results for myself and two uncles with matches
in different countries, I built another tree using the folk we matched until I
came to the Most Recent Common Ancestor for all of us. I have confirmed the
relationships and DNA matches through traditional charting so now would like to
merge the two files now knowing that John Brown was actually born and baptised
John GREEN.

In summary, I have about 700 people on my main family tree which includes the
alias John BROWN and about 80 people on the secondary family tree including the
correct birth name of John GREEN. I would like to maintain all the names BROWN
that are on my main tree as this is obviously how they were born, baptised,
married, known in general, etc.

Is there a way to merge the GREEN tree file the BROWN tree? I am using Legacy
9.0

Thanks in advance, Alan

[LegacyUG] Installing & Running Legacy using Parallels v14.0.0

2018-08-30 Thread Leon Chapman

(Virtual Machine > Configure… > Options > Security > check on Isolate Mac
from Windows)

If you have problems with Legacy install, here is a Parallels Help page:
https://kb.parallels.com/112983

Good luck with using Parallels 14.0.0 on the Mac!
