Re: [LegacyUG] gedcom

2019-01-02 Thread Brian Kelly

Right click on any file that you know should be a GEDCOM
On the menu that opens select Open With
Windows will offer MS Word but you need to click on
More Apps
Look for the Notepad App (This is a text editor) or Legacy Genealogy
Software for Windows
Select Note pad or Legacy depending on what you wish and make sure that
the check box to always use this App to open .ged files.

Click OK
In future you will be able to use the software you chose to open the
.ged files by double clicking on the file name.

If you choose Notepad you will be able to open .ged files as plain text
but unless you understand the format of a GEDCOM you will not be able to
understand the contents.

If you choose Legacy Genealogy Software you will be able to use Legacy
to import the gedcom into a Legacy family file but ONLY if Legacy is not
already open (Legacy will not open a GEDCOM unless it is closed when you
double click)

Windows has a default folder where it stores downloaded files, you should find
the file in that folder. The folder should be in your documents folder.
...\Documents\Downloads.

Open Windows file explorer and look for that folder. Open the folder and you
should find your downloaded file. If MyHeritage exported it as a GEDCOM you may
see filename.GED in the list.

If the file does not have an extension and appears in the list as a Word
Document then you have an incorrect file association which is telling Windows
to open .ged files with Word instead of a text editor.

Hi Valerie

No, you cannot, or should not, send attachments.

If you have files, of files or screen dumps, you can send them directly to
me at chris.hill.11he...@gmail.com . This
will take it out of the forum group and limit it to us.

I am a retired IT Manager with 35 years of user support and can usually

I am UK based and it is now 11pm here, but I can look at it tomorrow.

Hi Valerie

Exactly what do you mean by a GEDCOM file coming as a word document

1. Are these files which you have been sent

2. Are they files that you have downloaded and where from

3. Are they files that you have created

Why do you think that they are word documents? Is the file name .ged?

How are you trying to open them? Per se, there is no default program defined in
Windows to open these files.

Normally, one would use a text editor - Notepad or Notepad++ - to view these
files.

Otherwise one would use a genealogy program like Legacy to IMPORT the file and
convert it to its own file format.

Can you please let us know exactly what is happening, why and where the files
are and what are you trying to do with them.

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages without
conversion to attachments should use a different email address for their
subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require this
conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email providers
will also work but you will have to give them a try.
