Thank you everyone for the emails with great suggestions. It is late here now
and time for bed so I will get back to all tomorrow with more information to
try to clear up my question.

To Fred, my Barton line goes from Roger Barton b1628 in England. His Father
backed the KIng in the civil War and Roger fled to the continent and came to
New York with the Dutch in 1644. A grandson of Roger migrated to New Jersey and
my line comes out of this family. That information was found in a published
genealogy. I sponsored a DNA test of a male living related Barton and his
results matched the DNA of Roger Barton b 1628 for the 37 markers tested. If
anything here is of interest to you let me know. I can also give you the name
of the published genealogy. I will have to look it up.

I only signed up to the user group a few months ago. I have used Legacy for

Re: [LegacyUG] External backup hard drive

2019-04-28 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jack,
I don't know what you are trying to do.

If you want to see what media has been backed up in the media backup,
you  can use Windows File Explorer which lets you look inside the zip
file as it can treat it as a folder. Just don't forget that you are
looking inside a zip and open things from within it or move things in or
out of it. Alternatively you can extract everything to a new folder. It
should have all linked media unless you have some buried deep so that
the entire path from drive letter to the end of the file extension is
less than 260 characters.

If you want to check the data backup, restore it to a new name like
check backup and use Legacy File-Delete file when you are done. That
deletes the open family file including all the various "helper" files
for it.

In addition, get more backup drives or places. You should have a minimum
of 3 backup copies of important files off your computer, including one
off site.
Remember the Legacy cloud backup is just your data file and each backup
overwrites the last so you don't have older backups to restore if
something goes wrong that you don't notice immediately.

I assume that when you plug the external drive in Windoze opens up an explorer
window? If it does then you can drag and drop copy the whole directory in one
fell swoop.

I have a script that I use for backing up all my 'beloved' data and flip flop
between two external drives on a weekly basis. The script I use I have made
available on my company website. It is totally free and if you need any
assistance with it just email me and I will help (free).

I have a back-up drive, and online backup, and I use Dropbox. There is
also the Legacy online backup, but my security programs don't like it. I
have placed my Legacy data & media files under my "genealogy" folder. This
allows all my legacy data/media to get protected/backed up in case of
loss. You can do this in the options tab, then customize and change the
location of these files. I have done this for years and I have never had a
problem.

Use the external hard drive to COPY files. These files can be seen and
copied back again for a restore. They will probably take up more space than
the "backup" file created by the backup software.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with problem please - I have got myself in a mess

2019-04-28 Thread Brian Kelly
If I understand your diagram MRIN 3319 and MRIN 3339 include only Thomas
with no wife or Child. To fix those you only need to remove the MRINs.

Go to Thomas @ Margery in Family view
Open the Marriage List and click in the husband box at the top of the
screen to sort all Thomas' MRINs together.

Select MRIN 3319 in the list and click on the Select button.
Right click in the marriage box and select Remove the Marriage Link.
Click Yes in the confirmation window.

Repeat for MRIN 3339.

Now you will only have MRIN 1371. If that family does not include your
bolded John, click in the children area and select link to an existing
son. Find John in the name list, click on his name to highlight him and
click the select button.

You will now have Thomas with only one wife and they will have John as
their son.

Check that John (if he should have his own son John) has that son.

Now that the right people are all linked correctly you can go to
yourself and set relationships.

With yourself selected in Family View go to Tools > Set Relationships
Click Set Relationships to recalculate the relationships of everyone in
your file to you.

You will get the warning to redo this any time you delete someone from
your file because that missing person may break links and change
relationships.

P.S. When you find that people are incorrectly showing in family views
but the person is correctly included in your file it is best to unlink
that person from the incorrect family or spouse then find the correct
family group and add then by linking to an existing person. The only
time you should delete someone is when you know that they are not
someone you want in your file.

Did you not find the right topic in the Index, or not understand what
you read? The topic is under Relationship, Set.

From time to time, as you add new people, you need to tell Legacy to
re-calculate how these people are related to (or to someone else, if you
wish to know that.) It's very easy to do.

If you are the starting person (it will say Self above your name in
Family View) first go to your own record. Then open the Tools menu and
select Set Relationships. You should see your name in the top box. You
probably don't need to change any of the options. Just click the Set
Relationships button.

Now Legacy has worked out how everyone is related to you and will
display the relationships above their names in Family View, if you have
chosen to have this display.
