I went through a number of these marriages and deleted all the data and then had Legacy renumber the MRINs. Several were reused, but most were not. I then went through the same ones and made sure I removed the marriage link. These marriages disappeared from the screen, but when I had Legacy renumber the MRINs these were not reused and showed up again.  I am assuming these marriages were created when I imported my GEDCOM file from FTM for the Mac after I got my Windows computer and started using Legacy again. It looks like each marriage was created as it should have been with all the data and then the marriage data was also placed in blank marriages thus creating these “ghost†marriages.  I have tried compacting the family file, and check and repair but nothing has helped. These “darling†marriages still show up. I feel like there must be something I am missing and need help finding it.  Ila East Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). When importing a Gedcom made by My Heritage these RIN MH numbers are not recognized by Legacy; and therefore put into the General Notes fields. Hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] How to record patronymic names.
Here in Holland, where many people were only been known by givenname and fathersname before 1811, there are two ways to handle this. There are users who handle the patronym as a surname, others put the givenname + fathersname in the givennamefield. Both have their positive and negative points. At least the dutch users are asking for many years for a separate field for the patronym. But as you see, we are still waiting for it. Moses Seligmann signed documents as such, and in 1809, he and his family Adopted the surname Turkheimer, after that, documents were signed Moses Turkheimer. How should this name be entered in Legacy? On the individual information screen, If I enter Moses Seligmann (his birth name), it looks like every other middle name. I enter relevant info in notes and events. Re: [LegacyUG] Patronym with no surname
Small group?? Before 1811 many, many people in the Netherlands were only known by their patronym. All dutch orientated genprogs have a field for patronymes. The dutch translators for Legacy are asking and begging for such a field. Yes we can put in into the sunamefield. But it is not a surname. Some users put a patronym into the given name field. However it is not a given name. Besides that some patronymes changed into a real surname. So you cannot always say as you see such a name: this is a patronym and that is a surname. Only for that reason alone we need an apart field for patronymes. Furthermore this is not a dutch problem alone. Many other translationteams are asking for a patronymfield ( or similar ) for years. (At least since version 2). We are hoping it comes with version 8. This is one of the features what is really needed to transfer Legacy into a real international genprog as it is advertised. Legacy's Geo defaults are in 4 separate files named Geo*.txt These files can be updated by Millennia at any time so *user* defaults should not be set in them. Instead you copy the appropriate file -- for the USA this is the GeoCountryCodes.txt -- so you will have your defaults/modifications in GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt When Legacy runs it checks to see if there is a user -Alt file to provide the defaults. If not it uses Millennia's Geo... file with the -Alt in the name. The change you need to make to your GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt file is near the bottom in the USA section where you should remove the + sign prefixing United States. The lack of a plus sign signifies that USA should be used for long locations. The lack of a minus sign signifies that USA should be used for short locations. If you wanted all your USA locations to have Gene for the country for long locations you would be add a new line USA|+Gene --BEGIN QUOTE Millenia makes the best genealogy program by far, however, they all too often rush a new feature to release with out any effort to have the help files keep pace. If this information had been in the help file where it belongs, I would have found it, corrected it and moved on with out even posting about it. This failure to keep the help files updated has been noted and commented on by many others. It is time for this most important file for Legacy to be brought to a current status with appropriate information. I am done preaching and this subject is closed as far as I am concerned. I hope Millenia takes this hint and updates the help files, however, judging from past performance in this area, I think I will refrain from holding my breath as my grand-kids say I don't look good in blue. Re: [LegacyUG] Timelines available
From the help one of the many items about Timelines: Creating Timeline Files Legacy comes with several timelines that can be included in your Timeline and Chronology reports. You can also create your own timelines to use in these reports and to share with other people. And remember, these timeline should be about fairly well known events in history. Events that would have had an impact on many of the people in the area. These are the types of background and historical information that people will want to include in their own personal timelines and chronologies. To create a new timeline file: 1. From the View menu, choose Timeline Files. The Timeline Files screen appears. (See Timeline Files for more information about this screen.) 2. Click the New button. The Create New Timeline File screen appears. 3. Enter a description of the timeline. This is the description that will appear in the Timeline File List when users are selecting which timeline to use. 4. Click Save. The New Timeline Name screen appears. (See Timeline Description for more information.) 5. Enter a file name for the timeline file and click OK. You are returned to the Timeline Files screen with your new timeline added to the list. 6. With the new timeline highlighted, click Edit. This brings up the Timeline Editor screen. (See Timeline Editor for more information about the options on this screen.) 7. To add an event to the timeline, click the Add button. This brings up the Edit Timeline Entry screen. (See Edit Timeline Entry for more information.) 8. Enter the event range. There should be a starting and ending date. If an event was just a one-time occurrence, enter the same date into both fields. 9. Enter a Short Description. This is what shows on most reports. Make sure this description makes sense to the user when he/she sees it all by itself. For example, if you are making a timeline for the kings of Denmark, don't just put a name in the Short Description. The user won't know what it means. Put something like: Gorm the Old became the first king of Denmark. Or, Gorm the Old, 1st King of Denmark. 10. Enter a Long Description if you have one. For example: Gorm the Old, born about 840 becomes the 1st King of Denmark. His father was Hardecanute Sigurdsen. He married Thyri Klacksdottir. 11. Enter the Source of the information, if you know it. 12. When you are done, click Save. This returns you to the Timeline Editor screen. 13. Repeat steps 7 through 12 for each new entry into the timeline. 14. When you have finished adding new events, click OK to return to the Timeline Files. The timeline files are saved in the TimeLines folder under the Legacy folder. You are encouraged to send your timelines to Millennia so that we can post them on our web site for others to use. 6-232 - Original Message - From: Jane Sarles sarlesinsi...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Sunday 22 January 2012 18:56 Subject: [LegacyUG] Timelines available It appears that one may add timelines to what is available with Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] Choose branch of tree
Look in the Help. Search for Splitting and you get: Splitting Files Splitting Family Files in Legacy by David Berdan Most people like to keep all of their information in one family file. Legacy easily accommodates this because of its nearly unlimited capacities. However, as a file grows very large, it gets harder to work with. A file containing over a hundred thousand individuals can be a little cumbersome. Although Legacy will handle up to two billion individuals, it is often desirable to keep your family files to a more manageable size. When splitting a family file into smaller units you must first decide how many pieces you want to work with. To help you decide where to split a file you might want to print out an ancestor or pedigree chart. As a file grows, the first obvious splitting point is between your line and your spouse's line. This will result in two new family files. If your database is larger, you might want to split it at your parents and your spouse's parents, resulting in four files. Extremely large files could be split at the grandparent or great-grandparent level, resulting in up to eight or sixteen family files respectively. Whether you are splitting your family file into two pieces or more, the steps are the same. Copying a family line from a large file into a new one is extremely easy in Legacy. Here are the steps: Note: To follow along with this example, make sure you have the latest version of Legacy. Many of the features used here are new to the program. You can download the latest update from the Legacy web site at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com for free. 1. Make sure the large family file is open in Legacy's Family View. 2. Click View on the menu bar and select Split Screen from the View menu to open a second view on the screen. 3. These will be displayed side-by-side and a message box will appear asking if you want to open a different family file in the new window. Click No. 4. Click on the title bar of the left window to make sure it is current. (For this example we will be copying lines from the large file on the right to the new file on the left.) 5. Choose New Family File… from the File pull-down menu. 6. Enter a name for the new file and then click Save. All the names in the window on the left will be cleared when the new file is created. 7. In the right window (the large file), select a point where you want to split the file. Do this by displaying the husband and wife whose separate lines you want to copy. 8. Drag the husband's name from the right window and drop it onto the blank name box on the husband's side of the left window. When you do this, a window appears entitled Copy Between Family Files. 9. Click the Family button. This will open another window showing the spouses of the husband. 10. Click the All Spouses button. 11. Press the Ancestors… button. The Ancestor Options box appears. 12. Make sure the Entire Ancestor Line option is selected (click on it if it isn't) and then press OK. 13. Now, press the large Start Copy button. All the selected individuals and families are now copied from your large file into the new file. (Nothing is removed from the large file.) When the process is completed, the smaller, separate family line appears in the left window. 14. Now, repeat steps 3 through 12 dragging the wife's name instead of the husband. If you are splitting your family file into more than two pieces, repeat the above steps for each line you want to separate. The end result is two or more smaller files that are more manageable and easier to work with. And it's so easy… 5-525 Bert - Original Message - From: Joan Kemp jk...@yahoo.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Friday 1 April 2011 14:06 Subject: [LegacyUG] Choose branch of tree Does anyone know an easy, practical way of splitting off a branch of a tree in Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Married names still showing although husband invisible
From the Help: Married Names When a couple is married, in most cases one or both of the individuals involved change their names. This is usually the wife but in some case the husband's name will change. If you have a marriage name rule selected in the combo box at the bottom of the Married Names box, Legacy automatically makes the married name changes and displays them in the Husband's married name and Wife's married name fields. If you have selected None - don't generate married names, the fields remain blank. You can change the married name for either the husband or the wife by clicking the Change button to the right of the married name field. Married names can be included in the Name List and on the Index View. They are also used when searching and when generating anniversary calendars. When you select a different married name rule from the combo box, Legacy asks, Do you want this change to be the default for all future marriages that you add?. If you answer Yes, then any marriage you add from then on will generate married names according to that rule - until you change it again. If you answer No, then the rule is only applied to the current marriage You can also set the default married name rule on the Options Customize Data Entry tab. Bert - Original Message - From: CE Wood wood...@msn.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Saturday 12 June 2010 8:19 Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Married names still showing although husband invisible Brett pointed out that there is an option on the Marriage Information screen where you can choose: 0-None - don't generate married names 1-Replace wife's surname with husband's surname as an additional entry in Index View When you change from one to the other choice, the Rule Change box appears which asks: Do you want this change to be the default for all future marriages that you add? I am assuming that when you choose No that this is the only married name that will not be listed. I am certainly hoping that is so!! Also, I think that for any couple, also on the Marriage Information screen, clicking the button Change next to Wife's (or Husband's) married name would accomplish the same result. I can change either name to whatever and so could enter the wife's maiden (or any other) name as the married name. Brett's idea was the key to discovery. The list succeeds again! For the Individual Information and Marriage Information screens, this includes the input fields and any events shown in the list. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank
What has this to do with Charting help window blank?? Bert - Original Message - From: Dawn Del Guercio njheart2he...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Monday, February 08, 2010 5:45 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank Hmm.. Now I'm confused! :D Here's what I'm trying to do: My Murphy ancestry goes something like this: F. Murphy begat Francis, Raymond, Charlotte. Francis begat William, George, and Raymond. Raymond begat Frances J., Raymond, etc. Charlotte begat William, etc.. then Frances J begat William, Raymond, etc. So, my point is I've got several Francises and several Raymonds from different families, and I was hoping to find a way to lay, say 3-4 generations out on a chart that includes all siblings, so I can puzzle through which one of those I have a funeral card for I don't do well reading a genealogy in bullet form, and was hoping to get it visually, like a tree, so I could see the relationships with each other... Maybe I'll wind up just write it out by hand or maybe type it... Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank
The Help for Charting is placed in the wrong directory. It is placed in /Legacy instead of /legacy/LegacyCharting. It can be done in html, but I can't think of a way of doing it for a chart/printing. Someone else may have an idea though. It may be possible to create the html and use another program to transfer that to, say, a pdf format, but I have never tried this. I do of course want the focus to be on my ancestors, so I don't want the sibling families... just the siblings listed along side my ancestor. My reasoning is because I need a visual way to see the relation between many people with same or similar names. Raymond, Raymond J., etc. Any ideas at all about how to accomplish this? I have two questions related to one another. I am trying to find a way to do an ancestor tree (graphical) that shows the siblings of my ancestors on the same tree. I couldn't find a way to do it on Legacy, and then through to try out the charting program. I did an ancestor standard tree on there, and though it looks nice, I still can't find a way to list siblings on there either. My first question is, is there a way to do a visual ancestor tree which includes siblings? Then, in my attempt to find out if I could do this in charting, I clicked on the help button, and then on the help system button and it brought up a BLANK html window with no text. Where did the help manual go within charting? I also don't know how to go about checking for updates and updating charting when necessary. Thanks for your help! Dawn D. in NJ Dawn, I guess Help was inadvertantly omitted, I understand it is known and will be corrected. Your other problem is rather more difficult. The siblings are not included, of course, because they are not ancestors. I cannot see how this can be done in Charting, as the obvious way is to create an fdb file with just the people you want, but you would then have to create a descendant chart for multiple people and Charting cannot do this.
