Re: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair hangs on newer PCs

2017-10-01 Thread Gene Rampale
Backup you Legacy files, then:
Run CHKDSK /F from a command prompt.
The system will state it cannot lock the drive, and ask if you want to run
it at start up. Say "Y" and reboot.
It can take a while so do it when you don't need the computer.
When it is done try the clean and repair.
It is possible you have a bad sector on your disk, which could hang the
repair process.
Run it a couple of times, the defragment your disk.
Hope it helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] One Drive

2017-10-01 Thread Gene Rampale
I wouldn't wait. I have had the Fall update for a while now. It's mainly a
make it look like Windows 10 update with more business functionality.
Main thing to remember when using any cloudy service provided storage for
backup, is to only connect it when you need it.
Crypto locking rasomware will also encrypt your OneDrive.

I use Western Digital Passport drives with Microsoft's Sync Toy to make
offline backups. I pop it in, run my backups and back it goes to work for
offsite storage.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error problem, need help

2017-07-09 Thread Gene Rampale
Hello Murf,
Have you run chkdsk on your computer? It might be a bad sector on the hard
drive that is preventing the repair.
Right click on the start button, and select run.
In the run box type chkdsk c: /f
A box will say check the disk on reboot because it cannot be locked. Type Y
to allow it.
When it finishes, go back into Legacy and rerun the compact and repair a
few times.
Hopefully everything will be back in shape. Then back that drive up. It
maybe getting ready to go.
It could be bad news just prepare yourself.

Here is the command from Microsoft - trust but verify.

Good luck

Ask away, Cathy and others from Legacy pop in to answer a question or two.

You are right FB has done a number. In some cases it is easier to show a

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Pictures

2016-11-26 Thread Gene Rampale
Bob did a nice job explaining that.
A UNC - Universal Naming Convention doesn't depend on drive letters. In
business it can be easy to run out of drive letters A-Z.
It just point the drive to a location the \\name.

When you hear cloud computing or cloud storage, just remember it means
someone eles's computer or storage. A NAS Network Attached Storage is your
personal cloud storage. Wow your friends with that one. "I have a cloud
storage system I setup at home"

Good practice to have a second or third portable drive for backups. I use
those Western Digital 1TB Passport drives in different colors. One travels
with me at all times. They are encrypted so losing one does not expose your
life to anyone; just make the password the same and put it in your will or
someplace your next of kin can get to it. A second is stored in at my dad's
house, and a third is locked up in the vault at work. I just rotate them on
a monthly basis.

They were surprised when someone backed up a company, and someone else
backed up 35TBs of video to OneDrive.
They offered me Office 2016 and 1 TB of storage for a year. I will use it

storage.
Watch for the Google security tuneup alerts, they give you an extra 2GB if
you do the assessment. It adds up.

Re: [LegacyUG] File Locations, Win 10

2016-05-29 Thread Gene Rampale
I have upgraded two older machines and a laptop running Windows 7 to
Windows 10 without any problems. They actually run as well as they did
under Windows 7. Windows 10 is still very much Windows 7 under the hood.
Before doing the upgrade I would uninstall anything you don't use, running
CHDSK a native check disk program a couple of times, and defraging your
hard drive. Turn off your anti-virus, some get too aggressive during
installs. If your machine runs poorly after upgrading or in it's current
Windows 7 state, time to buy new, or convert it to Linux Mint.
Don't delay, the free upgrade ends soon.

Re: [LegacyUG] User Documentation

2016-05-29 Thread Gene Rampale
Sourcing is interesting. If you are ever wound up, try reading:
Evidence explained : citing history sources from artifacts to cyberspace /
Elizabeth Shown Mills
You will be comatose shortly! Our library has it, don't buy it. Legacy
covers sourcing pretty well. I am going back and fixing my dodgy
sources/filling in the blanks. Cathy and others have stated it well before.
If you gave your source to someone, could they find the source without much
problem. If so, you are doing it right.
Good Luck, and don't stress too much about it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Cloud Storage

2016-05-20 Thread Gene Rampale
I use Microsoft's SyncToy 2.1 to manage multiple backup copies.
Official Microsoft download here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155 or Google
SyncToy 2.1, but only download from Microsoft's site.
You setup file pairs. My Legacy files are in my Family Tree folder on my
google drive. One folder pair syncs between Google drive and OneDrive, the
second pair goes to my portable backup drive, and the third to my network
storage array (IT Pro by career). Use the ECHO mode to keep all the folders
the same. If you would like detailed directions, let me know I could cook
up some screen shots. The wizard will walk you through the process.

You can never have too many copies of your data.

You have Gmail. Just flag it as spam. It will go away. Same for everyone
else who can't figure this out.
