Re: [LegacyUG] Big problem
Before u start making changes dump a gedcom of everything and multipe backups, so you have a way to get back to your current state. Depending on how new RIDs are assigned you might get a clue as to what was added last, so you can unlink last created and not screw up old links. SInce we are dealing with a database, it would sure be nice if a changelog was created showing adds, deletes and changes historically made. Maybe this will be a feature of REV 9? [LegacyUG] How To Apply Alternate Surname to a Group with Same surname?
I have several hundred people with 3 varations of a Surname For example 3 Surnames OldestMostUsedSurname Varation1Surname Varation2Surname I'd like if Surname is Varation1 or Varation2, add Alternate Names KEEPing FIRST Names and use OldestMostUsedSurname as the new alternate name. Is there a way to accomplish this without manually doing each one individually? thanks, john Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Special characters
UTF-8,UTF-16, Unicode characters have been possible for 5-6 years via 3rd party Libraries used with Visual Basic 6. Legacy 7 and Legacy 8 both could have supported UTF-8 with these libraries. Some 3rd product libraries and there are others: http://www.cyberactivex.com/unicodetutorialvb.htm http://www.hexagora.com/en_dw_unictrl.asp Unicode would allow you to documet ancestors with Cyrillic, Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew and many other letters currently not supported. Whether Legacy 9 departs from VB6 or not it should support Unicode, UTF-8 and UTF-16. Do we know if this is part of the spec for Version 9? Re: [LegacyUG] UTF-8 Polish, Slovak, Ukranian, non-English characters
After reading Michele's comment about Polish Characters I tried the following: In Legacy I tried to use Ukrainian, Polish and Slovak letters and I could figure out how to enter them. I exported a UTF-8 Gedcom 5.5.1 file with 4 people in Legacy an English person whose father was Ukrainian whose father was Polish whose father was Slovak used all english characters for names.. I then edited created Gedcom file with notepad and added Cyrillic, Polish and Slovak characters to the appropriate person's name. I then imported into Genbox, FTM2012 both imported gedcom no errors and were able to create charts with all characters. I then imported into Legacy did not see any error messages, non-English characters were not displayed correctly. Names stored in fdb tables IR, MR, NR and NX appeared as they do in Legacy but not like they do in the Gedcom, Legacy export mentions UTF-8 and Ansel which both should support Polish, Slovak and Ukrainian (Cyrillic) characters. Re: [LegacyUG] How to document Locations in Europe 5 Fields vs 4 Fields
Based on Jerry comments, I can see now that if one uses X positions for all entered locations, than sorting works right to left left to right any position order for sorting After converting all to X positions exporting to other programs is working better for me as well. because i previous had some locations with one, two, four and five positions when sorting I was very limited when looking for similar information. Now with all entries converted to X positions all sorting works as I was hoping for. Thanks for everyone's comments. john On 3/11/2012 5:08 PM, Jerry wrote: > Sorry, I stated STATES and PROVINCES, but the provinces will be in their > own list when clicking on CANADA, since they have PROVINCES and the > United States does not.Jerry > > On 03/11/2012 07:56 PM, Jerry wrote: >> Hi again Mary. Re: [LegacyUG] How to document Locations in Europe 5 Fields vs 4 Fields
Ideally I'd like to have some locations with 4 position fields and some with 5 position fields. He where I'm confused. I'll create 2 new locations one with 5 fields and one with 4, next 2 lines city, admin, county, state, country city, county, state, country Now I go to View->Master Lists->Locations I do a sort trying each of the following Position 4, Position 3, Position 2, Position 1 also Position 5, Position 4, Position 3, Position 2, Position 1 in both of the above the country fields are in different places of the sorted lists. With a large number of locations some 4, some 5 positions, things don't line up, when sorting country, state, county. Forcing 5 fields to 4 or adding a fifth field to all my US locations, would allow me to sort via any field. Yes it's a kludge to force 5 into 4. But then sorting shows variations grouped together. I would think my rough spec would allow greater input variations. Even for those who have US only locations the ability to add 5th field for some entries, while keeping most at 4 would give ability to add Hospital, City, County, State, Country Cemetary, City, County, State, Country Address, City, County, State, Country City, County, State, Country then allowing one to sort Country, State, County and have things line up. Sorry about the misconception, with the way things are coded and for sorting to work, to me it seems like one needs to force all locations either to 4 or 5 positions. Re: [LegacyUG] How to document Locations in Europe 5 Fields vs 4 Fields
Thanks for everyone's ideas. Some of my Polish time periods use 4 some 5 positions I decided to force all 5 location positions into 4. Having same number of fields helps with sorting. Ideally if would be nice to specify Number of locations field MAX. Then if entered with less fields specify which fields to become null. ie. MaxPositions = 5, LessPositionOrder if less 2,3if less than MAX ie For Me for Poland city, administration, county, state, country (1,2,3,4,5) If less fields entered enter Nulls city, county, state, country (Null 1 field - admin) city, state, country (Null other 2 fields -admin, county) city, state (Null other 3 fields) state (Null other 4 fields) I will use 4 fields, and in the process converted all locations with fewer positions to 4 position system. john On 3/11/2012 4:04 AM, Ron Ferguson wrote: > John, > By all means use the American four field standard for American > locations, but for other countries use their own formats, normally the > way in which they are written. > Ron Ferguson > http://www.fergys.co.uk/ > *From:* John Magyari <mailto:jmagy...@gmail.com> > *Sent:* Thursday, March 08, 2012 7:35 PM > *To:* LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com > <mailto:LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com> > *Subject:* [LegacyUG] How to document Locations in Europe 5 Fields vs > 4 Fields > Typically for US locations i have 4 FIELDS > City, County, State, Country > > How do others handle European Countries? > > For example I have a village in Poland Area > > 1900's part of Austria Hungary > > Village, District, Province, Country 4 FIELDS > Lipowiec, Sanok District, Galicia Province, Austria-Hungary > > Same place in 1940's 4 FIELDS > Lipowiec, Sanok District, Krosno Voivodeship, Poland > > Almost all places in Current Day Poland 1950's through today *5 FIELDS > City, Gmina, County, Voivodeship, COUNTRY > Lipowiec, Dukla Gmina, Krosno County , > Subcarpathian Voivodeship > , Poland > > and since 2012 *5 Fields > Lipowiec, Jasliska Gmina, Krosno County > , Subcarpathian Voivodeship > , Poland > > When some locations ideally be 5 FIELDS, do you go back and update > those with 4 Fields? > > With some having 4 some having 5 it's also harder sorting and then > viewing similar towns over time periods. > > thanks, > john magyari > > > Legacy User Group guidelines: > http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp > Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: > http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ > Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: > http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ > Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp > Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) > and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). > To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). [LegacyUG] Gedcom Exporting Settings are not remember next time used?
I am going through process where I need to export updates and gedcom subsets, doing probably 10-15 per hour. 1) Every time I generate a new Gedcom the character set defaults to ANSEL, I use UTF-8 100% of the time. ??? Is there a place to set this default to UTF-8? ??? If not can edit the fdb database and force it to what I want? 2) Also 100% of the time I want Privacy Settings For ALL 7 SETTINGS to be checked and REMOVE [[ ]] unchecked. After setting these correctly, every subsequent new GEDCOM generation forces me to set these again. ??? Is there a place I can set these to what I want and they will be always set correctly, the way I want? ??? If not can edit the fdb database and force it to what I want? I am willing to re edit the FDB every update I get for Legacy, if I can just have Legacy remember what I want, I am spending sop much time re setting each time and then when I forget to recheck everything I start doing it again. thanks, john magyari Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Typically for US locations i have 4 FIELDS City, County, State, Country How do others handle European Countries? Re: [LegacyUG] Chart Printing
Unfortunately, an all blood chart is not possibly with most of the top Genealogy Programs. At one time 2 program were able to produce them or by feeding the proper information into an All-In One Chart they could be created. Now I think there is only one program left and it has not been updated for 4-5 years. Some printing services will print these charts for you as well. They are great for family reunions, others can see what relatives are giving you info, and see which relative branches are bare. Other similar charts although not a blood chart, is documenting a village. You can view what you have and even the branches you have not been able to connect to the main portion of the tree. If you do want to get a blood relative tree and have a 3rd party print it out, lets say for you. do the following. Select yourself Then find your direct-line ancestors with no parents tag each. Now create a descendant tree for each of those ancestors, and tag the descendants. Save the tagged individuals as a gedcom to send to a 3rd party print company or if others create the ability to make All-In-One Charts you can shove you data there. Remember to exclude spouses, if it's a pure blood tree. If you keep the spouses you have another unique tree which will probably create a really huge tree. Then have it all printed. These are the people you've documented related to you via blood (or at least have a high probability to being blood related to you). Viewing these charts allows you to then see who might be potential candidates to sign up for genealogy tests so you can fill in some of blanks for those ancestors of yours that did not pass the DNA down to you. The blood relative tree is a unique type of tree. In nature this type of tree exists in Hawaii and is called the Banyan Tree where the tree has multiple trucks that are interconnected via the branches, similar to you and your blood relatives. A blood tree is like having multiple descendant trees interconnected based on a single individual starting point. Each of your cousins blood trees will be unique to them and their siblings. Re: [LegacyUG] how do I change sex of spouse
joan, I just did it. Created a new database with George a male and Frank a female set them as husband and wife. Then Export the Database to a Gedcom. Then with a text editor find the individual with the incorrect sex, here Frank went from female to male. Save the file. Now import the GedCOM into a new database. Each time you run into this you will have to export out of legacy, make the change and then import back into Legacy. There are ways to directly edit the Microsoft database, but for most this is not recommended. Now when you open the database the Married GEORGE and FRANK both males are correctly identified. john Joan Lalonde wrote: > Thank you. Then what? I want to generate a gedcom that is a subset of the Complete Database. It should include all ancestors for a certain individual. And for all those ancestors every descendant. a) find all ancestors with no parents in DB. of individual X b) Then from all those end branches, generate all their descendants. john RICHARD SCHULTHIES wrote: > Go to View '(File Edit Add) View'; drop down to Focus Geoup, > Rich in LA CA > > --- On Mon, 3/29/10, John Magyari wrote: > > >> From: John Magyari >> Subject: [LegacyUG] All descendants, of the ancestors for a particular >> individual >> To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com >> Date: Monday, March 29, 2010, 1:49 PM >> I need to create a Gedcom >> >> 1) for a certain individual in the Database PersonX >> >> 2) find the direct-line ancestors of PersonX >> <--- Like Search Query >> Direct-Line Ancestors with no Parents >> >> 3) Now find all the descendants of those found in step #2 >> >> 4) then create the gedcom >> >> I'd like to create a query so I can do this easily, without >> having to >> manually do each individual found in step #2 one by one. >> >> >> IE.
