Re: [LegacyUG] Removing notes from family tree

2020-02-11 Thread Rune Mattsson
I use Notepad++ and regular expression to edit the gedcom file and remove
all notes

Search for ^\d\s\b(NOTE|CONT|CONC)\b.*\R and replace with [nothing] will
remove all lines starting with a digit followed by a space and then NOTE
or CONT or CONC.

Above search is a part of a rather big macro that is modifying my gedcom to
suit my purposes

Rather worthless suggestions!
1. How to export a file that not can be opened?
2. The only solution as I can see.
3 See 1.

@Gene & Don

on April 10 for both

Try for yourself:

Do a search in the FamilySearch for Jack Robertson (Exact spelling) with
place of birth Sweden
Our hero will be on on the top

Re: [LegacyUG] Census vs residence

2019-08-06 Thread Rune Mattsson
have the same family listed in the 1930 census in two states with quite a
long distance between (according to Google Map 490 miles)

*Jack Robertson with wife Pauline and daughter Rosemary*

They are listed in:

*Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States*

But also, in:

*Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, United States*
So, where did they lived?

Re: [LegacyUG] Photo Program Text Box

2018-07-27 Thread Rune Mattsson
I agree with Jenny, IrfanView is a superior program and I’ve done exactly
the changes that Alexander asks for (excepts that I’ve added text boxes in
the top)
I’ve also used it to highlight lines in the census by adding a red dot or a
number in the margin, I’ve cropped pictures and created “preferred photo”
(much easier than the same in Legacy) and more.

but there is one thing I miss in Legacy, which I understand has been on the
suggestion list for years and as I think should be very easy to implement:
In Legacy I can choose viewer for documents (Word) and for pdf but, for
pictures I’m limited to the Media Gallery which has very little editing
possibilities!
if I had been able to open a jpg inside Legacy with an external editor
(regardless of whether it is Irfanview, Photoshop Elements or other)
probably the programmers would have done it in less time than was required
for just me to solve the problem in another way

Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom files uploading to web site.

2018-06-14 Thread Rune Mattsson
A question:

How do you prevent the notes from being exported?

I’ve done as Cathy suggested
Customize-> Export items-> Export these items and removed NOTE and MNOTE
without success, all notes are still exåported

So now I use "brute force" with Notepad++-, I’ve created a macro that
removes all lines starting with a digit, followed by a space and then NOTE,
CONT or CONC .

Search for ^\d\s\b(NOTE|CONT|CONC)\b.*\R

Repalace with nothing

it works and my gedcom shrinks from 578529 to 491189 lines

[LegacyUG] V 9.0.0.226

2018-05-22 Thread Rune Mattsson
A warning and a question:

To those of you who have Windows regional setting set to any country that
does not use a dot (.) as decimal separator (in Sweden we use a comma).

DO NOT INSTALL V 9.0.0.226!!

There is a high risk that your database will be corrupt, especially if you
are using geocoding.

And now the question:

How do I return to V 9.0.0.217?

Hopefully with the same database.

[LegacyUG] Omit notes when exporting to gedcom.

2018-04-07 Thread Rune Mattsson
I want all notes omitted when exporting to gedcom.

With notes, I mean all long text that can be linked to people, events,
places and so on (gedcom tag NOTE)

I select File -> Export -> Gedcom File -> Produce file for Legacy ->
Customize

And under Export these items I remove NOTE

But still contains the resulting gedcom notes?

What am I doing wrong?

[LegacyUG] File-ID is not exported to gedcom

2018-04-03 Thread Rune Mattsson
Several years and versions ago I was forced to do what sometimes is
described as “the last chance” to recover a corrupt Legacy data base.
That means to export it to a gedcom for Legacy and reimport it, it was said
that “almost” all data would then be saved.
At this time my data base counted maybe 1000 persons and no media, I do
not think something was lost then but now I’ve tons of media.
I’ve now looked at the field “File-ID” (FilingRef in table tblBR), I
haven’t used this before but it seems quite interesting and important, so I
gave it a look (nowadays I test every new possibility) but found that this
field isn’t exported in an gedcom for Legacy and consequently it becomes
empty when it is reloaded
In my opinion the field “File-ID” is important and it should be clearly
declared that it’s not fully working in Legacy

Re: [LegacyUG] Publishing

2018-04-01 Thread Rune Mattsson
Or, you can use The Complete Genealogy Reporter (TCGR) as a complement to
Legacy

TCGR creates reports by starting Word, then it writes it as a native Word
document.

TCGB is not as flexible with the narrations as Legacy, but the document may
be fully edited, you can remove or add text lines and still have the
correct page numbers

Re: [LegacyUG] Tag / Untag media

2018-03-26 Thread Rune Mattsson
Thanks Cathy, that was exactly what I was looking for, an opportunity to
hide redundant and/or sensitive pictures.

However, there is a problem with “Untagged” pictures…..

When I export my database to Gedcom they become visible, the receiving
program does not understand _SCBK Y (or the absence thereof)

I do not think Legacy should export untagged pictures at all before there is
 a choice at the export.
“Include untagged Media”

[LegacyUG] Tag / Untag media

2018-03-25 Thread Rune Mattsson
Can someone explain this:

I select a person with pictures, choose the media icon and get several
buttons:
*Add Media…, Edit…, Options…, Help and Close. *

Under the Options I can choose between the following:
*“Tag all pictures” *or *“Untag all pictures.*

And the *Help > Media Gallery explains it as follows:*

>
> *Tagging and Untagging All MediaYou can quickly tag or untag all the media
> in the gallery by clicking the Options button and then choosing Tag all
> pictures or Untag all pictures.*

I have been looking for a way to tag individual pictures and then be able
to list these, but I have not found anything about this, not even with
Access in the media table

Sorry, I should not have used the abbreviation
It stands for *T*he *C*omplete *G*enealogy *R*eporter from Nigel Bufton
Software, a rather impressive report generator that can do things I have
not found elsewhere.

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage - not free

2018-02-16 Thread Rune Mattsson
I should never give my card number for such a “free” trial.
More and more companies including Microsoft and Norton promises free trial
but they demand my credit card number.

I have a special card for all internet shopping, this card I can load with
money as required.
And, if I sometimes miss to load it I will have a very polite mail that
they did not find money in my account.
And, if I then like them and want to continue I can transfer money to my
“dummy card"

Re: [LegacyUG] Export a select file

2017-10-01 Thread Rune Mattsson
I'm using "The Complete Genealogy Reporter" (TCGR) to create such a report.
I export my whole file (30 000 persons) to Gedcom and import it to TCGR.
Then I select a person and request a report for his/her ancestors X
generations backward.
(or descents forward) with cousins, second cousins, uncles aunts etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location List maps

2017-08-23 Thread Rune Mattsson
I already often use Google Maps in Legacy, but on three screens:
One with Legacy and the second with Google Maps open.
And on the third, I've excel where I convert the usual standard decimal
coordinates to the non-standard string of numbers used in Legacy.
And then copy and paste.
Wish I could do it right in Legacy on one screen

Re: [LegacyUG] Hashtags

2017-07-13 Thread Rune Mattsson
In my opinion” Hashtags” are something I’ve used for years in Legacy
although I called it “dot tags”

I’ve never liked the tagging, too easy to delete and altered by mistake so
I created hidden events/facts starting with a “.”. I could then add it
(with notation, date and place) to a person.

I think “Hash tagging” should be useful if it coould be used with other
master data, locations, events etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Bing versus Google maps

2016-09-13 Thread Rune Mattsson
Yes, how to correct an auto pinned location?
I have the list of places were I can see the coordinates and that Bing has
“guessed” them but I can’t clear the “guess”, to do so I have to go to the
Edit and there clear the latitude and longitude. Only then will the box be
visible where I can stop Bing to “Guess”.

Then I have to find the correct place (that may be on the other side of the
earth), either on the map in Legacy or on other maps. And the coordinates I
get (for Bengtskär 59°43'23.41"N, 22°29'56.95"E or decimal 59,723061N,
22,498890E) are not usable in Legacy, i have to convert them to
594323.41N, 0222956.95E; i.e. a string of numbers

It must be possible to make it easier!

And Denice, I also use another genealogy programs (mostly for creating
reports):

The Complete Genealogy Builder (TCGB) with its report generator The
Complete Genealogy Reporter (TCGR)

AND TCGB has integration with Google Maps .

Re: [LegacyUG] Bing versus Google maps

2016-09-12 Thread Rune Mattsson
Bob (Robert57P_gmail)

Tried, and it worked (with the coordinates showing in decimal degrees).

But, if Legacy is using Bing, why is this spot not visible in Legacy?

And as I wrote, i have hundreds of similar cases, not only small islands
but even small villages and roads whose names appear and are searchable in
Google Maps but nor in Bing

We can compare the quality on the Åland Island in Bing and Google, Gogle
finds maybe 1000 more names there

Re: [LegacyUG] Bing versus Google maps

2016-09-12 Thread Rune Mattsson
I will give one example (I have hundreds). Try to Google for “Bengtskär”
It is such a well-known place that no country or ´county is needed

Take the first hit and read the Wikipedia (there is also an English
version) and take also a look at the map There is now a hotel in the
lighthouse an my nice was married in the chapel there.

My ancestors lived there and fighhted during the Continuation War (WW2) in
1941

Try to go to the same location in Bing: ONLY WATER!

I have not used Google Earth for a long time; instead I have used Google

But it in any case a shame that you have to go that way!

[LegacyUG] Bing versus Google maps

2016-09-12 Thread Rune Mattsson
I’m getting crazy at the maps provided by Bing

I have several hundreds of small islands in the Baltic Sea where I know
people have been born, lived and died, sometimes there are still living
people.

These islands do not exist according to Bing, when I enter their names
guesses Bing and misplace them, often in the Mojave Desert or in Africa,
and when I enter the coordinates they become pinned in the middle of nowhere

Also, the shore profiles of the islands found is so rough that they are
impossible to recognize.

But Google Maps knows them and find them accurate with much better quality.

Give me Google maps as a alternative in Legacy!

Re: [LegacyUG] And a US Census Area be considered a county?

2015-11-05 Thread Rune Mattsson
I am also very interested in Gustavus, Alaska!

A cousin of my grandfather (Alfred Otto “Fred” Matson) lived there; his
parents were born in Finland and emigrated, his father became fisherman in
Washington.

Gustavus has a wonderful site here www. gustavushistory.org/ (remove the
space after www.) and if you search to the left for “Matson” you will find
a lot of Fred and his wife Ruth!

  Hi,

We are about ready to release a new General Release build that will
  support
the changes that FamilySearch has made to their API's. We would like
 any

of you who would like to help do some additional testing to please
  download
Legacy using the link below. With this update we really need the Legacy

FamilySearch feature to be used and tested. Please try everything you
normally do. Share data back and forth with FamilySearch, Merge
Duplicates, etc. If you are LDS is everything related to ordinance
working for you. If you are not LDS (you won't see LDS ordinance items)

but everything else should still work and needs to be tested.

All features need to be tried since the API changes affected a bunch of
  code in Legacy.

As always we ask that you please make a backup of your family files
  before
  downloading any new update.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 507

2015-07-10 Thread Rune Mattsson
I personally should not save importent data as a back up on a USB drive,
and especially not on an NTFS formatted such.

I changed once PC and moved several 100 photos with a portable USB HDD and
many photos were damaged, some were completely destroyed, others had
strokes and lines, or were discolored.

I have heard that an NTFS formatted USB unit is more sensitive to
interruptions and a Legacy Back Up is a zipped file which means that if a
single bit or byte gets wrong then probably the whole file is destroyed.

2015-07-09 19:21 GMT+02:00 Donna Newell djnewel...@gmail.com:

Thank you so much Mike. I reformatted the thumb drive with NTFS and it
worked like a charm. I am so glad someone is out there looking out for all
 of us.

The error will also occur if attempting to save a backup file greater than
4gb on a disk formatted with the FAT32 file system. You must use the NTFS
disk format if files are larger than 4gb. Alternately, all of our backup
programs allow you to save the backup file in smaller 'chunks' to avoid the
 4gb limit of FAT32.

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture handling/editing

2015-06-08 Thread Rune Mattsson
Hi Cathy,

Not a waste of time in my opinion.

I have tons of pictures; there are scanned documents, camera photos,
scanned photos, downloaded photos (I don’t trust the Internet to be static
so when I find something interesting, I download it)

I am handling all my pictures in Windows photo gallery where they are
tagged and commented so I can find the correct picture in a few seconds,
double-click and open it in IrfanView.

And, in IrfanView, I first copy the filename, then I choose “F8” (Copy to)
-”1” (my Legacy Media folder which is the first of 14 user defined “copy
to” folders)

And, if I want a picture from the Internet: I download it to my download
folder, open it, copy the name, choose “F7” (move to) - “1” (my Legacy
Media folder)

After that I link the file in Lecgacy (I am pasting the filename)

Then, I open the picture (now in the media folder) in IrfanView, I edit it
by cropping (Ctrl Y) or resizing (Ctrl R), convert to greyscale (Ctrl G)
and much more if required (often with one but newer with more than two
keyboard / mouse clicks)

I maybe want to make annotation on it by highlighting persons in group
photos or rows in census and I choose F12 (show paint dialog) and can then
write, draw arrows and circles.

If I edit the photo I will save it under another name and link also the new
name, I keep the old link but uncheck the tickbox “Tag / Untag for
Printing. My experience is that I will need the same photo more than once
(for other persons) and if so I pick it again, edit is and save it with a
new name.

And as I wrote, isn’t IrfanView enough, i can from the menu choose open
with external editor and choose Photoshop (one of three user defined
programs)

I Will make a suggestion to make it possible to edit the picture in
external editor and maybe replace the button “Set as Desktop Wallpaper”, it
happened once that I selected it by mistake and got the wedding photo of my
great grand parents all over my desktop: D

If i want to change my desktop i will do it in Windows!

2015-06-08 4:43 GMT+02:00 Cathy Pinner genea...@gmail.com:

 Hi Rune,

A better solution would be to ask for an enhancement to Legacy to allow
use of an external image editor.

But how often do you want to edit images? I do my editing before attaching
to Legacy. I edit a copy of my archived image and then usually resize so
Legacy doesn't have to work so hard resizing images for reports and charts.

Attaching every image twice on the off chance you may want to edit it
seems a waste of time since you can more quickly find and edit an image
anyway in Irfanview or another image editor. So long as you don't change
 the name, it's still attached.

make notes on pictures and save them back, all with a few mouse clicks.

And if that's not enough, I have the choice to open it in external
editor, such as Photoshop and continue to edit.

If I in Legacy double-click on a PDF it will open in my PDF reader, if
I click on a DOC opens Word, if it is a URL my browser opens, but if I
click a JPG it opens in Legacy zoom where I can’t do anything, not
even copy the file name / path.

And, if I choose 'edit' I will come to a very simple editor, I can
crop, add caption and not so much more, Even there I can’t copy the
 file name / path.

I have now discovered that if I in Add Multimedia choose to add a
JPG as a document file will get a document icon, but if I click on the
icon it will open in IrfanView!

Therefore, I have decided to in Legacy always link to the images
twice, first as a picture and then as a document.

I have more than 1,000 linked images, can anyone see a risk in this,
 for example with future updates?

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location Table pEdit/List/Print

2015-06-02 Thread Rune Mattsson
Thanks Cathy for the hint about the clipboard extender, it seems to be very
good and I will take a look on it. But, I’m already using Snagit from
Techsmith as an clipboard extender and I don’t know how they will work
together

As I wrote, I have several hundreds of locations and will have to copy
each location in two steps: longitude and latitude.

And to locate every place on the map, zoom and pin, is also too
time-consuming.

So it seems that I will have to use the extracted Excel file from the
Master Location Table and copy/past from it although I had preferred to
make it inside Legacy

2015-06-02 3:30 GMT+02:00 Cathy Pinner genea...@gmail.com:

 Hi Rune,

 1) you can use copy and paste for the co-ordinates - if you use a Windows
clipboard extender like M8 softwares FreeClips/M8 clips then you can copy
 both and then paste both

 2) you can mark the unknown locations as Do not auto-geo code the current
location by clicking on the Geo-code button above the people associated
 list.
Then you can go to a nearby location on the map and then go back to the
unknown location or simply navigate to the known place and right click on
the map when you know the approximate location. (OR you can do more
research on the location to get a closer fit)

I think you need to add a suggestion for printing only verified or
 unverified records.
You can choose to include only tagged locations.

Result: Legacy freezes and I have to close in the Task Manager before
restart.

Example 2

I go to the Master Location list - Options - Print - Location List

I will have the master Location List on screen and I can print or save it
but when I close i got the error

“Run time error ‘438’:

Object doesn’t support this property or method”

And Legacy closes!

And a couple of questions

Is there any method to copy the coordinates from one location to one or

And is there a way filter the Master Location List and only se and print

2015-05-23 Thread Rune Mattsson
Thanks Sherry
I have already decided to never add only a name, I always put the person in
the master list.
Cause: sooner or later the name will show up as a real person, and then I
will get a warning that he/she already exist

2015-05-23 19:32 GMT+02:00 Sherry/Support she...@legacyfamilytree.com:

This is something that's on our suggestion list.

However, it would probably work if the shared events are linked to
individuals in the Family File, not if you just add a name without it
 being in the file itself.

That's why for now I'm only using the Event Clipboard. Plus, with the
Event Clipboard, you can customize the information shared with each
 individual.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Family Search and Shared Events

2015-05-23 Thread Rune Mattsson
I mean the possibility you get when you want to share an event with one or
more people:

1) Select from the name list
2) Just enter the name of a person.

In option 1 you get the name list of all existing people (master list I
call it)
In option 2 you get a menu where you can write whatever e.g. Donald Duck
but Donald Duck” will not show up in the master list and you cannot search
for him later.

In the beginning seemed option 2 pretty good but I quickly noticed that it
wasn’t!

One example again:
I have never before recorded the priests that christened or married people
but I took a look in the church record for the christening of my
grandmother (mother’s mother) who was born 1900 in northern Finland and I
knew the name of the priest, I had photos of him!
25 years later he had moved 400 kilometres (250 miles) and christened my
mother and uncle.

I don’t (at the moment) think he in any way
was related to my grandmother but who knows

2015-05-23 20:47 GMT+02:00 William Hoff bh...@mchsi.com:

By entering in the Master List do you mean as a name. I'm not certain
exactly what you mean. Then the people show up as unrelated? I have
several people I'm pretty sure are related but don't know for certain or
how. I think this might work well for me just never thought of it and want
to understand before implementing. Now I enter what I know as a to do
 record.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Search and Shared Events

2015-05-22 Thread Rune Mattsson
i agree with Pat, shared events are very useful, much better than copy.

With shared events you can connect people who are not otherwise related

Example:

i have a lot of immigrants, they often arrive in groups, they indicate a
relative in the country they came from, and a friend in the United States
and with shared events i can group them all together into an events with
different roles.

As I understand, The GedCom standard only specifies relationships within
families, but Legacy is based on a relational database (Access) where you
can create additional relationships.

But it is a pity that Legacy when exporting to GedCom doesn’t split up the
shared event on the persons concerned

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Search and Shared Events

2015-05-22 Thread Rune Mattsson
An example from the real life where I have used shared events:

People involved: My grandfather Wictor, his brother Alfred, a man named
Albert, his brother Karl and another man, Martin, all from the same
municipality in Finland.

1900: Alfred emigrated and settled in New York.

1911 immigrated Karl and his brother Albert, they stated Alfred as a friend
in NY.

The brothers returned after a short time in Finland but in 1916 they were
back in Ellis Island, and this time continued Karl to Canada where he
settled but Albert returned back to Finland.

In 1925 it was time again; Albert, grandfather Wictor and another man,
Martin immigrated to Karl in Canada.

Wictor, Albert and Martin worked with Karl some years but returned then to
Finland and what I heard was they were then quite wealthy.

Karl stayed in Canada, my grandfather Wictor met for his first time my
mother (she was born after he left Finland), Martin bought a farm close to
Wictor and Albert married Wictor´s sister.

And Alfred who started it lived in NY where he died during the building of
Empire States Building.

2015-05-01 Thread Rune Mattsson
I made a copy of my FDB database, renamed it to MDB (Access) imported it in
Open Office (i don’t have MS Access)
After that I copied the tables tblET (EventTypes) and tblRO (Roles) into
spreadsheet

Then I have all Event Definitions with their roles and sentences in easy to
read tables.

But it would be nice if there was a possibility to print/save the tables as
text direct from Legacy, the events and sentences are very flexible but
quite hard to handle!
