Geoff, is there a Webinar that details all the regular websites you use when
doing your researchand whether they are sites that require subscription or
not.  You noted several in the "Unlocked" book --which I found to be an
extremely helpful book.  And one other thing...when do you "declare" that a
particular research subject is in FACT the one that links to your tree.  There
are several that I've found that seemingly are linked, but the absolute
conclusive evidence might not be there.

1) Legacy 9 Deluxe open and while I was creating a TO DO it suddenly FROZE.
Cursor would move but nothing was responding...nothing in Legacy and nothing in

Ok,

Is there an easy tutorial on how to use this function in Legacy? I sometimes
find good information but when I try to copy it over/merge it with my
information, I end up with ALT dates. Say I have just the year and Family
Search has the entire date, I would have thought it would be easy to press a
button and have the information copied.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Email Process

2016-03-28 Thread STEPHEN
Okay, I don't get it. Since I sent this 03/19/16 email, I stopped receiving any
group emails in my spam folder even though I made no changes of any kind any
place. However, I also stopped receiving many emails period, including Webinar
announcements. Looking on the archives, there have been approximately 86
entries since 03/20/16 of which I am guessing that I have received about 10.
For today, 03/28/16, there are 10 entries yet the only one that I have received
is the one from Brian/Support regarding Attachments.
What is going on?

Subject: [LegacyUG] New Email Process

I have been on this list for approximately 9 years and have received immense
benefit from it but I am now afraid that this may be coming to an end.

Recently I have been receiving a few emails in my inbox as they should, some
emails with attachments which has been explained e.g. yahoo and which I will
not open but will instead delete immediately, and the majority have been
received in my spam folder which again I will not open. At this moment, I have
received 10 emails in my inbox and 46 emails in my spam folder for the period
of 03/16/16 - 03/19/16. I also know that some emails are never received at all.

As an example of my frustration, I received Pat Hickin's email in my inbox
inquiring about creating a Comprehensive PDF which immediately attracted my
interest. This was followed by two emails responding to this which seemed to
imply that Michele had furnished the answer. However I had not received that. I
then found Michele's response in my spam folder which again I will not open.

I next decided to check the archives believing that the entire thread would be
readable there. However, I there discovered that the archive hadn't been
updated since 03/15/16 so there was no Comprehensive PDF thread. I finally
found it updated today, 03/19/16, with the thread including Michele's solution
which was great.

I understand Ken McGinnis' explanation of MailServers altering headers, etc.,
leading to spam issues. However, I do not understand why I can receive Pat
Hickin in my inbox and have received Michele there also on other occasions, yet
Michele responding to Pat goes into spam. It seems that there should be some
degree of consistency in the handling.

So my question is whether there is any hope for improvement? If there is, I
will try to stick it out because I have always liked this list. If, however,
this is the way it is going to be, I will be submitting an unsubscribe request.
If I can't receive information in my inbox and I can't rely on the archives,
then there is no benefit.

And please don't tell me to change email providers as it is a little late for
that. I have been using Xfinity/Comcast webmail for over 10 years and I have it
configured the way that I want it with some 170 folders for storage.

Hoping for an optimistic response.

They might but you can protect the timeline file by changing the file
name. You will find the timeline files in the Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\Timelines\English folder. If you give it a different file
name only the original US Wars.txt file will be updated by Legacy in an

If you select the report options tab and turn on the timeline column
then the duration for events will be displayed in the timeline as a
horizontal bar between the start and end dates. Only the start date will
be included in the event list though.

If you want to mark the start and end of the event in the chronological
list you can edit the timeline files to have two events, one for the
Start of WW II on 1 Sep 1939 and the second to mark the end on 2 Sep 1945.

Re: [LegacyUG] Why don't I receive emails?

2015-11-18 Thread STEPHEN
On the two points that have been raised for this issue,

1) I frequently will not receive any email from the list for several days and
then it starts again. I simply go online to the archives where I always find
that there is none for the missing days. Apparently everybody had other things
to do. No problem.

2) As stated by CE, I constantly receive posts replying to previous posts that
I never received. Fortunately the previous posts are usually embedded in the
replies so I can tell what the subject is.

It addition to the random, capricious dropping of subscribers, I all too often
get posts that are answering posts that I never got. So many other lists work
without a hitch, it is too bad Legacy can't.

I also, like many on this list, don't always get emails from the group. Often a
whole week goes by without any email at all, which is most unusual for this
group, and then they start up again. I have no idea why and I don't know how to
re-set any of the preferences. I don't know if I miss any emails since I don't
get a long backlog when they start up again. Maybe everyone is just quiet now
and then?
So I guess that's just how it is.

I belonged to this list a while ago, but somehow got taken off. After trying
several times to re-subscribe with no success, I finally gave up. Trying to
subscribe again, gets me the notice that it was successful. But still no
emails. Not even in my Spam box. Any suggestions? I'm using the archives now.

To Brian in CA, not clear as to how the body which references 515, 516, and 517

And Sherry, I do worry about the numbers. I am not blindly downloading whenever
an update is available but am waiting to see what falls out of it. If there are
complaints about version xxx, then I want to know if that is your current

click on information for 516 which takes me to information referencing 515

Yahoo mail is a real problem for us. They've done some things to their
headers which supposedly stop spammers and it's caused problems for
all sorts of lists, unless you're posing to a Yahoo group!

I'd recommend using a different email address for contacting us and
sending emails to the list - see if that doesn't make a difference. I
know Yahoo doesn't work using our Problem Report Form so it's not just
our email list software.

Re: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Make a Family File Read-Only?

2015-03-15 Thread Stephen Dowdy
The semantics of Windows' READONLY bit on files is not the same as Linux'
Immutable attribute (immutability on Linux requires 'root' to set/unset) --
i don't know if there's a true equivalent. So, i'd suggest that given
that you have no control over Legacy's insistence that it erase the
READONLY bit [1], that you try to use elevated privileges (another account
at least) to set ACLs on the file(s) in question to allow READ by Everyone
(or those in question), but only allow full-control by an elevated
account. You may have to use TAKEOWN to make the files owned by an
elevated account. (or just try copying your database into another
account's

Once you've done all this, i bet you will run into Legacy fatally faulting
and exiting, however (which is why i'm not bothering to test the validity
of my theory). I suspect the engineers have made the assumption that they
MUST have write access to the file, and there's either deliberate code
conditionals that gracefully exit the program, or ungracefully take an
exception.

I don't know if there are restrictions on mention of other vendor products
on this list (etiquette #2 is just seems advisory), and i have no direct
experience, but you can find products that can take GEDCOM and create
directly runnable EXEs or do view only of GEDCOM data. google: gedcom
view-only. (yes, i do know that GEDCOM interchange is lossy)

Anyway I will +1 the idea that Legacy should have a View-Only mode.
(preferably selectable as a field value inside the Access database with
associated UI controls)

--stephen

[1] IMHO, this behavior (silently altering filesystem metadata for objects
that are normally user-controlled ) is bad practice. the program should
issue a warning or error message that it can not proceed due to the files
being READONLY . (In a Perfect World...). I do, however, understand the
lowest common denominator user-targeted programming model that's common
on Windows and the support overhead arguments being made in this thread
-- but I'm an advocate for at least having Advanced User modes that can
be enabled where sensibility takes over again. Don't know how much
engineering changes would need to be made to the program to support a
VIEW-ONLY mode.

You're not doing anything wrong. This is another instance of a major bug in
Events overrides. It has been reported before, but not in the Marriage Event.
How discouraging that Legacy 8 is unusable in its major strong suit, which used
to be allowing for individual tweaking. They have s many bugs to fix,
create more when they fix some, and seem unable to keep up. No wonder smart
people still use 7.5. There is truth in the old adage, if it ain't broke.
Legacy 7.5 is wonderful, but they have so much to do trying to keep 8 going
that they can't support 7.5 any more. All the bells and whistles in the world
don't matter when you can't do the basics. It was certainly released much too
early. I hope they get their act together soon. I know of more that 50 people
who have abandoned Legacy 8, some reverting to 7.5 via the less than ideal
means of a GEDCOM, and others who need a stable database. SIGH! Why spoil a
good track record with this?

Hang in there or revert to 7.5 if need be until they get on track.

I must be doing something wrong. I am using Legacy 8.0.8.454 on a
Windows 7 computer. I have added a Marriage License event to a person
instead of a couple since I don't plan on adding the spouse (unless he
is otherwise connected to the family). Without the override it says she
got a license to marry herself. So in the override I add

[FirstName] obtained a license to marry [Desc] [onDate]. where [Desc] is
 the name of the spouse.

I expect to see that she obtained a license to marry so and so on such
 and such a date.

But the date doesn't show up. Just that she obtained a license to marry
 so and so.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I always use periods after middle initials to indicate that it is an initial.

this computer age, we could safely omit those periods.  It won't cause
