I might have missed something in the discussion, but has the issue of sending

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email
providers will also work but you will have to give them a try.

Re: [LegacyUG] Accessing the Legacy fdb file from Open Office

2016-02-09 Thread Gerald E Boor
Colin, it's amazing to me that getting Microsoft Access in the UK would be that
expensive. But for awhile, I rented the complete Microsoft Office Suite, which
included Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access for $6.99 per month, U.S. dollars.
Just go to the Microsoft Office website and see what their current offerings
are. It allowed me to download the entire suite, but when I decided to migrate
to MySQL and to save money, I gave it up. It is still on my desktop, but
because I am no longer a subscriber, it is READ ONLY. Food for thought, but SQL
might also do what you require. Jerry Boor, MerriamFamilyTree.org

2016-02-08 Thread Gerald E Boor
Totally agree with you, Don, about a users' group of programmers/developers
that could contribute to the Legacy software without any jeopardy to the
company's propriety or profits.

If anyone ever messed up their database because of L-Tools, it was their own
fault because Dennis always stressed a backup before doing anything. Too bad
Legacy just didn't hire Dennis. His ideas were excellent and he saved me many
hours with his excellent knowledge of SQL and Microsoft Access, things that
Legacy itself often could not fix. Jerry Boor, MerriamFamilyTree.org

[LegacyUG] Calendar listing

2015-12-30 Thread gerald
I am trying to create a date listing. I know I did it once before, but don't remember how. But I do remember clearly creating the listing which was not quite what I required at that time -- now I need it! It is not a calendar, but followed a date format, with a listing of all the instances of events on that date -- births, death, marriages, etc. But I cannot find how to re-create it once more! Does anyone have an idea of how to do it? It is not any of the options under Calendar reports, and I've looked at every other report in Legacy. I am stumped!

No, no, no --- you don't understand -- I already tried all of those!!

This was just a plain text list with the month heading and a list of dates for every day. Nothing complicated. I am quite certain this was iin Legacy as I haven't used any other program for a long time. Do you suggest I try another program? Which one?

Re: [LegacyUG] Why don't I receive emails?

2015-11-18 Thread gerald

I also, like many on this list, don't always get emails from the group. Often a whole week goes by without any email at all, which is most unusual for this group, and then they start up again. I have no idea why and I don't know how to re-set any of the preferences. I don't know if I miss any emails since I don't get a long backlog when they start up again. Maybe everyone is just quiet now and then?

So I guess that's just how it is.

Re: RE: [LegacyUG] Census event vs source

2015-10-21 Thread gerald

"Marriage" is an all-emcompassing word. If you are speaking of the marriage CEREMONY, that is an event. It took place at a certain date and place. The marriage CERTIFFICATE is a source document, as a record of the event. But we tend to lump it all into one term as "marrriage" and we understand the meaning (usually) in context. The same with "census" -- is it the census taking, or the census report you mean? The census taking took place long ago (on one date and place), an event which is now recorded and referenced in the census report. Again, we tend to lump it all into one term. Ah, semantics.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

So a Marriage must also not be an event. The marriage certificate or license merely is a source for residences, ages, possible parental names, etc.

I tried telling my wife that our marriage was not an event. The doctor said my scar should heal nicely.

[LegacyUG] Uploading webpages

2015-10-13 Thread gerald
I seem to recall something about this topic some time ago, but wasn't ready to do it them. Now I am

I have created the webpages, according to the menu in Legacy, which look good in my browser. Of course, nothing has been uploaded yet for anyone else to see! I read the directions about using some FTP program. I have done that many years ago, and really don't want to do that now. All I want is to post these files on Dropbox. Is that possible? How? Or is buying space on the internet and using FTP the only way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Neat mug shots

2015-07-09 Thread gerald
Yes, Sherry, I do that too! I also find that I cannot print anything from the web as I want it. I like to remove all the ads and extraneous things from the pages, and re-format to suit me (and make it fit on one page, if possible). I will often use Word (so I can include pics) or sometimes Wordpad, which is a simpler text-only program (saved in RTF format). There are other text programs one can use, whatever you have available on your computer. I can then store these files according to topic and all is well! Well, at least until MS changes their format once again and these older files will not open!

DUH - I didnt even think of that - thanks. Ive done that for web
pages before (copy/paste them into MS Word) so I can control the page
breaks, formatting, and such. I guess since his document is within
multiple frames I was just assuming the copy/paste trick wouldnt work -
but it does! It does require 1 copy/paste per tab, but thats not a big
deal.

I actually like to print things like this to a PDF and then I put it
in my Legacy tips folder for future reference so I dont have to
remember where was that web site w the tip about

As far as increasing the size - the ctrl/shift/+ enlarges the ENTIRE web
page. It does not increase the frames percentage on the page. When
viewed right now the document only takes up about 1/3 of my screen.
Granted, it looks clean and sharp, but having a bigger frame would allow
one to see more of the document without scrolling withIN the frame window.

Thanks again,

some images are way bigger than necessary), then I can save the
 article and/or print it.

Be sure to put the URL in at the bottom of the document before you
print it so you have proper citation of where you found it!

BTW, when you print, it doesnt care what you have the browser display

 the web pages.

As always, an excellent tutorial Mark!

 Hi Bob,

Thanks for the kudos. To tell the honest truth, it had never crossed my mind about printing out the info. I always thought with todays browsers and the ability to have multiple windows open, you could always keep a page from a specific site open and flip back and forwards between program as well. It will take a little time to implement as I am a very busy person, and Id like to make sure that it works proper before I upload the new code to print.

As for making the windows/frames larger, most browsers can zoom.

 To increase magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ +
 To decrease magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ -

 See if that helps?

VERY nice tutorials. Excellent screen tips in the graphics, and I like your do ONLY one info.

However, is there a way to get the steps to be in bigger windows(frames?)?
Also, it is impossible to print the tips - the only thing that shows is what is in the frame. If you dont want to change the screen setup, maybe you can add a print tip button/link?

 Thanks much,

Re: [LegacyUG] Chasing the market [was: Any Way to Mark a PERSON ...]

2015-04-09 Thread gerald

It may appear, John, that what you would like to see in a program is very logical to you, but the number of other users that feel the same can be counted on one hand. It is just not worth the time and effort to make those changes for only a few. I know from personal experience in writiing a simple program that one little correction involves re-writing the entire code for the program, and I have to ask myself is it worth all this bother? just for this little change before doing anything at all.

A better idea is simply to make the changes yourself. I find that I often have to make it myself for anything to be the way I want it. So write your own program that does exactly what you want. Then it will always be perfect. Very logical way to go, I think. Dont wait for others to do it for you -- do it yourself.

Your (and my?) idea of what the market requires may be different from what Legacys management feels is necessary.
What you and I whine about most often are the small 10 cent changes that could make our lives easier as we go about our business.

I would like to see an L8.1 that picks up a number of these changes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Make a Family File Read-Only?

2015-03-13 Thread gerald

Perhaps you can explain your reason for doing this. I dont quite understand why there is a need for this. Are you sending out this file to others in your family? Or are there others using your computer? Why would anyone want to make changes to your files? How do they get access?

The way I handle security of my data is to keep a backup copy of the latest version of my data. Legacy asks me every time I close down whether I want to make a backup copy. I do. I keep it separate from where my data files reside so they dont both risk being lost should disaster strike (as it will). If someone does make any changes to my file (which would be most difficult), I stilll have the good copy that I use for working on; anything else is a throw-away version. I could send that to other family members, they can do what they like with it, but I still have the official version of the data. I am selfish and keep complete control of all my data files!! :-)

There are other ways you can use to share your data with family members that dont involve giving away complete control of all your hard work collecting and organizing your valuable family data and allowing someone else to corrupt it. My opinion only; ymmv (your mileage may vary).

Ron, I know how passionately you feel about this subject because you have been
telling us for years, but for me, by using

Town, County, , Country (using the extra comma)

for England's locations, I am fulfilling your needs and mine too.

The GeoLocator is not a Legacy program, but an add-on. It is designed by

Whilst some users are happy to include unnecessary commas most of us do not,
and if we require a location we will go to Google Maps or equivalent. I also
use a Gazetteer for my home UK locations.

So 1) do not try to make the GeoLocator fit when it doesn’t (if it does then
you are lucky)

 2) enter the location as you would if you are a resident of the country in
question

 3) remember that the locations are yours and for you decide the format.
eg. for England the Locator insists on UK. or GB as the country, it isn’t,
England is, so I do not use either, nor do we have states but counties, hence
our general location is town, county, country, which is the way I do it, except
I include the house and street as well – since it ain’t going to work why not,
and it reads better on websites and in reports.

In other words do as you please and don’t let it bother you.

Subject: [LegacyUG] How to Properly Format a Location in Puerto Rico

I am having issues with locations in Puerto Rico.  I have someone that was born
in Yauco city (which is in Yauco municipality) in Puerto Rico.

In the Individual's Information dialog window, if I click on the little globe
icon to the right of the birth location field (Show Geo Location List), it will
then bring up a dialog window with the title Geo Location Database.

If I then enter Yauco into the city field and click on the Search button,
it will then find only 1 record.  The format that is placed in both the Core
and Core + fields are as follows:

Yauco, , Yauco, Puerto Rico

If I then select one of those, it will return to the previous screen
(Individual's Information) and enter the information in the format above.

But if I then try to move off the field, I will receive the following message:

There was never a county by the name of Yauco in the state of Puerto Rico.

(You should check the spelling or the original source documentation.)

If the data was formatted by Legacy, then why is it complaining?

There are four buttons at the bottom of the dialog: OK, Show County List,
Online County Maps, Online County Info.

If I click on Show County List, then another dialog window opens with the
title USA County Verification List and it will bring me to a list of records
starting in the state of Rhode Island.  If I then scroll through the data,
there are no records for Puerto Rico.  I understand that Puerto Rico isn't
technically a U.S. state, but why is it bringing me here then?

So either something isn't working correctly, or I am misunderstanding something.

Why doesn't the Geo Location Database work for Puerto Rico locations?

How should a location in Puerto Rico be formatted?

Re: [LegacyUG] How's the Web Page Output - Legacy v8

Were you speaking of The Master Genealogist or The Next Generation? I was
confused about that, plus what minor detail was missing.

TMG would be my preferred way for web presentation except for one minor detail.
I'm pretty sure my legacy output to a GEDCOM file would not work. I started
using Legacy back in the early days with the intent of putting all the info on
the web but legacy didn't have the capability of outputting everything I
wanted in their web page generator, or it wasn't in the format I wanted it to
be in. So, I improvised and used a lot of HTML references in the person's
Events  that I'm pretty sure won't translate in a GEDCOM export. The first
time I decided that the Legacy web output wasn't doing what I'd hoped I decided
to improvise a way to get the output to display the way I wanted it to display.
Then I had to go back through the database and revisit every person. I just
don't have the desire to go back through all my sources and events and revisit
all my documentation *again*. Actually, I'm happy with the Legacy output and
while updating the web isn't a one click event it only takes me a day or so to
massage the Legacy web output and get it uploaded.

Carl, while most of us do goof, at least occasionally, I don't think it is
routine any longer to always give a warning for our error. Most users don't
want what they consider an unnecessary warning. However, it might be ok if it
can simply be turned off in the preferences. You will probably just have to
live with how this works. Jerry

Her parents names would be; to me, that is what one would be looking for. You are looking for the birth of a child by the parents, not by a subsequent son/daughter.

Howland Davis

P.S. Nan, my given name is Howland, not Howard G, no problem. For three years, when I worked for Goodyear Tire, the company computer system changed Howland to Holland because I, obviously, did not know what I was typing. I finally found the right IT individual who changed the system so it would just underline Howland in red but not change it. And motels frequently take my reservation and then put it under Howland so that I am told that they have no reservation for Davis.

Howard, the red exclamation mark shows what Legacy sees as a possible error and one that says birth date too late after marriage just indicates that in usual circumstances, there would be births between the marriage date and that childs birth date. Mostly the first birth occurs within the first 2 - 3 years, so with the large gap, there is a strong possibility that there are births you havent found or still births that may not even be recorded.

It isnt saying your Great Aunt is the problem, just that before her birth there could be births you have missed. I found this out as I also had this message and I also know there are definitely no births beforehand in mine like you.

There is a way to turn off this exclamation mark for just this one incident I think. Someone with a better knowledge of how Legacy 8 works will tell you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Website

2015-02-03 Thread Gerald E Boor
I took a look at the websites mentioned, but it doesn't appear these websites
are designed to allow one to view the hierarchy of a family tree. It appears
these sites, though quite good and detailed as to information, only show static
lists.

I guess that's why there are a great many of us who use Legacy on the desktop,
but TNG - the next generation of genealogy sitebuilding -on the web. It
depends on how you want your information to be displayed, as to what you might
choose to use on a website. But in our case, we would not be satisfied with
static lists without the ability to dynamically display actual family trees.
Just my thoughts for what it's worth.

Re: [LegacyUG] Bagging a Live One - Connecting with Cousins You Never Knew You Had - free webinar by Mary Roddy now online for limited time

2014-12-18 Thread gerald
Thanks for that notice. I did go to view that webinar, and it was quite interesting, full of good information. However, I dont know if anyone mentioned this to you yet, but there was only one slide throughout the whole webinar. When Mary was explaining something and showing us pictures or how she used Excel, we got nothing. Was there a glich in the recording of this webinar? Is there a problem in the file posted? We received the audio with no problem, but there was nothing on the screen other than your opening slide. It would be helpful to see what she was indictaing when saying in this area or right here.

Legacy QuickGuide: Obituaries in Genealogy: A Research Tool by Cari A. Taplin- 2.95

Obituaries are not only a fantastic resource for beginning your genealogical research, but they can also be a great tool for enhancing what youve already collected. While their accuracy should always be questioned and verified (as with ANY source we encounter), obituaries can contain a large volume of information for an individuals family. Finding obituaries, however, is not always easy. Many newspapers are being digitized and placed online, either for free or through a subscription service, but there are still many more that are only available in physical repositories in their original form or which have been captured on microfilm or microfiche. Understanding, locating and using obituaries in your research can take your family history to a new level.

TheObituaries in GenealogyLegacy QuickGuide contains valuable information on how to interpret the data in obituaries and death notices as well as newspaper articles and other listings. This handy 6-page PDF guide can be used on your computer or mobile device for anytime access.

Re: [LegacyUG] This letter (Â). What does it signify?

2014-12-17 Thread gerald

Oh, man, did you ever get a lot of them!! It usually indicates that our email program didnt understand what you wrote, so puts in a symbol because it didnt know what else to say!

I work for a firm that does a lot of publishing, so whenever articles are written, I have to go through them and remove double spaces after sentences (and correct other formatting) because the publishing software cant process them. It can be a pain sometimes if I have 61 pages! But as you say, some of the older generation learned to type with 2 spaces after a period at the end of a sentence (as did I) and it takes a lot of worrk to un-do a habit and create a new one. They dont need to re-learn since they have me! LOL

The word-processing programs create a larger space at the end of sentences so we dont need to put them in. They also start a sentence with an uppercase letter, and we dont have to do that either. Except some programs dont, so I have to go back and correct myself and put them in. Thats why most kids today have such poor grammar, with no punctuation or uppercase letters. They dont need to do it!!

Sent:Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 10:55 AM

Wow, worse then I thought. It might be difficult for me after over about 50+ years of typing to start to use only one space!

Jerry

Thanks CE. I never realized that. That was one of the things that they should have figured out a way to NOT change because it is easier to read almost anything with TWO spaces between sentences. Re: [LegacyUG] Moving file to another computer

2014-12-13 Thread gerald
Its not very clear what you mean by moving my file, but I am assuming that is your data file. When you close your session, you are always prompted to make a backup of your data file, and you should be able to save it anywhere you want. But I always export my data file as a GED formatted file to an external storage device, just for safe keeping, and can then import it into any other computer anywhere if I put it on a memory stick, and with any genealogical program. That seems to be the simplest method. I hope that is what you were looking for.

[LegacyUG] How Do You Report A Bug?

2012-08-30 Thread Gerald Peterson
Quite some time ago, I got some assistance from Dennis Kowallek (creator of
LTools) because I used SEARCH and REPLACE in an attempt to get rid of a
SOURCE event globally, not realizing the correct way to do so. Anyway, he
helped me with coding to correct the problem.

Now I notice that apparently the apparent bug is not fixed because SEARCH
and REPLACE allowed me to delete an EVENT NAME and replace it with a blank
(null character, I guess). Probably a dumb thing to do, but I was working
with a backup and wanted to see what would happen. What happens is that
all the EVENT NAMES get blanked out, but can no longer be accessed through
SEARCH because the EVENT NAME no longer exists. However, the detail under
that EVENT NAME does exist and shows up when you look at the individual
records. I would think this could be considered a bug in that Legacy
should never allow a person to do this.

How do I report this bug which might work this way on several things,
namely SOURCES and EVENTS?

Thanks,
Jerry Boor - Michigan

PS--I just re-joined the Legacy users' lists, so if you reply to this
message, would you also CC me initially to make sure I'm getting the
