RE: [LegacyUG] AniMap
I thought it was okay to talk about any of the add on programs that Legacy sells so I use AniMap all the time. Yes, you can consult the Redbook or the Handybook to see when a county was formed from what parent county BUT in Animap you can plot specific places (more than one at a time) and see where they are in relation to these boundary changes. For example, a town might be right near the border of another county in 1863 so you know that you need to check the adjacent county. Most people would travel to the point that was easiest to get to do their business. It might not be in the county that they lived. You can link families in different counties because you can see that they actually lived quite close to each other. You can overlay a modern map over the top. It also show a lot of things other than towns, like cemeteries and churches. AND, you can plot by lat/long :) Michele -Original Message- From: Barbara [mailto:bschwart...@twcny.rr.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2012 7:12 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] AniMap While I like the concept of AniMap and I have a copy, I'm having difficulty understanding just how to use it. RE: [LegacyUG] AniMap
Do you have GPS coordinates for Miles? In the AniMap database there are several Miles* in Centre. Milesburgh, Milesburg, Milesboro. All have the same GPS coordinates so the name has changed a few time. Centre County didn't exist in 1728. I had no problem finding Bethlehem, Northhampton. Pine Grove is in there too. Here are the step by step instructions to find Pine Grove (I am using this one as an example) 1) Bring up PA (you don't have to change the year yet) 2) On the toolbar hit OPTIONS and then SITEFIND a list of all places in PA will come up 3) On the toolbar hit SEARCH and then BY NAME 4) Type Pine Grove in the SEARCH FOR box. Type PA in the STATE box (you can leave the county blank) 5) Double click the Pine Grove that is in Schuykill. A little box will come up. You can ignore it. 6) X out of the window that has the list of places in PA and you will be back at the map of PA 7) On the toolbar hit OPTIONS then PLOT. Double click Pine Grove and now it will be placed on your map. 8) Now you can play with the years to see what county Pine Grove was in when. 9) You can go through this process as many times as you want and you can add multiple locations to the same map. Let me know if you get it to work! Regarding Milesit's a township and in 1728 shows up in NCA1 which I take to mean No County Administration. See http://historical-county.newberry.org/website/Pennsylvania/viewer.htm Bethlehem would appear to be in (a then larger) Northanpton County. Pine Grove (now in Schuylkill) then in Berks. RE: [LegacyUG] AniMap on Windows 7
Wow! Windows 7 was released to manufacturing in Jul 2009 and it takes Goldbug until the end of August 2010 to make a patch for their program? Not impressive by my standards. Someone should make a program called AniGoldbug showing how their programming has slowly changed over the years. :-) However, the OP said the error message stated File B not present while another poster indicated no problems. I wonder if that difference can be explained by the install location, either Program Files or Program Files(x86)? Win7 is very good at compatibility for me and after Win7 has been out for so long, I never considered that the latest version of AniMap would not be compatible as well. My mistake. RE: [LegacyUG] AniMap on Windows 7
Sounds like the program is hard-coded into looking for itself in Program Files instead of looking at registry values. It's about a 2 minute fix to the code but if Goldbug feels that there is more to fix, let 'em have at it. Maybe there's more problems under the hood (bonnet for those of you across the pond.) They know a lot more about writing code than I do. By the way, I didn't mean to infer that you were whiningI'm the one that usually does all the whining. [LegacyUG] AniMap on Windows 7
Would someone running AniMap on Windows 7 please contact me offline as now mine doesn't want to run stating things like File B not present and Comaps.exe has stopped working (in other words, it crashes). Re: [LegacyUG] AniMap on Windows 7
If you'll go to the AniMap website at www.Goldbug.com, you'll read: AniMap is currently not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or Vista. We are working diligently to resolve this issue and expect to have a solution available by the end of August 2010. If you own AniMap 3.0.2 we will upgrade your software at no charge when the patch is available. AniMap 3.0 and 3.0.2 both work fine on all 32-bit versions of Windows. [LegacyUG] AniMap was: Recommendations, please
I second the applause for AniMap. (Available at LegacyFamilyTree store.) If anyone wants to take a test drive, it's available (free) at most (all?) Family History Centers of the LDS Church. The test drive convinced me that I need it at home. FWIW I probably use AniMap in a different way than computer-whiz people who put their images into their programs. I just print out the maps that go with my family's locations, and use them in notebooks. Maps are so interesting to people who might otherwise have a (strange) lack of interest in their own family's past. [LegacyUG] Animap
What exactly does Animap do? I Googled it and got a tiny picture of the USA in the top corner of my screen with some eastern states coloured in but with no explanation. Didn't see a FAQ, just a link to buy it. How many countries does it map? Which ones? RE: The Legacy store, is there any difference if we buy it from the Legacy website or from the publisher's own website? Does Legacy get a portion of the sale price? The prices are the same, so I wasn't sure. Scott On Mon, Aug 2, 2010 at 3:04 PM, Dee Ziegler dee.zieg...@gmail.com wrote: I second the applause for AniMap. (Available at LegacyFamilyTree store.)
