Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-23 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Pat,

I hadn't thought of doing that. That's a good solution for some things.
Your problem may be where you are trying to do the edit.
You need to edit existing locations in the Master Location list unless
you want the location with and without the formatting.
It works for me.
I chose a location used in a Residence event and the italics are there
in the reports.
I chose to edit a location for another event in the Event dialogue just
by adding formatting to part of it and it asked if I wanted to save a
new location.

Of course if you want the location without the italics as well then
you'd have to have two entries in the Location list which were identical
apart from the italics (or whatever other formatting you applied).

I note that formatting for a vital event location doesn't show through
onto Family View but is there in reports.

When you tried to use both italics and underline, were you trying to do
both at the same time.
that is: highlight the bit you wanted formatting and then go Ctrl + u
and then immediately Ctrl + i?
If so, that's why it didn't work. You have to highlight the bit you are
formatting again, otherwise you've just added the second format to the
end of the highlighted section.

Bryan,

I should have said, that where I am seeing the results of my formatting
attempts is on a descendant narrative report .pdf. What I am attempting to
format is a "sic."
Thus I have a Salford Twp., which is frequently referred to -- in wills
etc.-- as Sulford Twp. So I sometimes try to enter
Sulford [*sic.*] Twp.
or perhaps
Sulford [*sic.*,* i.e.*, Salford] Twp.
I'm never trying to italicize the location itself.

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-23 Thread Brian/Support
The Event/Fact, Description, Date and Place fields are not WYSIWYG (What
You See Is What You Get) fields. When you use the CTRL-key to format
those fields, including the place, you should see a string of funny
characters before and after the text. Those strings of characters are
the format codes I mentioned. They tell the reports to turn on the
attribute then turn it off again. You only see the text with the format
applied in reports. Not sure where you saw the format applied, I did not
see it on the event edit screen nor on the individual edit screen.

Remember also my warning about the effect of using those format codes in
place names. New York, New York, New York, United States is NOT the same
location as that location with those format codes surrounding the name.
Unless you are using the same set of format codes on every location you
will have multiple copies of the location when you have places with and
without format codes added or with different combinations of codes like
underline plus Italic and underline only.

In family view all the format codes are ignored in the display of the
vital events. In Descendant View the place names were displayed only
with the format codes not as WYSIWYG. In Chronology View a place name
with underline added caused every following line to be underlined in the
report style (with the option to have places displayed in reverse order
the "format on" code at the start of the place name is not followed by a
format off code because that is at the beginning of the place name after
the country name which precedes the city in that option. It would be
interesting to see how the display would look with all locations having
formats applied, the format off codes after each country would turn off
the underline then it would turn back on with the city name.

Have I convinced you yet that trying to put format on Event Names,
Descriptions, Dates and Places is not a good idea?

That works find in the birth and death fields, but has no effect in the

it underlined the word but did not italicize it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-22 Thread Brian/Support
Use reset to set the report to defaults. There should not be a line
between events but Legacy is now incorrectly adding those if you run a
lined report first. The error is recorded in our problem reporting system.

To change report spacing select the page layout tab then click the
custom report spacing button. There are a number of line spacing options
there that may give you what you want.

The line for marriage is a new addition in response to a problem report.
It is a placeholder when a marriage has no data entered but does have a
source. We needed to insert something where we could include the source
citation. Before the recent update we were not including source
citations for marriages without data.

There is no option to change the way pictures are included so the line
under the caption cannot be removed.

Although you cannot use the format buttons to set the format in the
Event for the Event Name, Description, Dates or Places you can select
the text and use CTRL-i to set italics, CTRL-b for bold, CTRL-u for
underline and CTRL-s for superscript formats.

If you try to add those format codes to Event names, dates and places
though you will find that the event with format codes will become a new
Master Event Definition for each form of code/code combination and
places enclosed in format codes will also be new places in the Master
Location list. For Events you will then have to define your own event
sentence(s) for the new event definition. I did not test the impact of
format codes around dates and date checking for invalid dates in
Potential Problems. On the Chronology tab the event with a formatted
date does sort correctly so the date may be working as a good date.

I see two others have already replied re use of the quoted name to have
Legacy use a middle name or nickname in reports.

You probably only think you want this. I assure you, those
double-spaces can more than double the size of your output.
I spent several labor-weeks deleting enough blank lines to
save 473 pages in one narrative.

Aside from that, there are drawbacks to the blank-lines.
They frequently cause the page to break oddly (whether
you're printing to paper, to pdf or to html). A badly placed
page break can change the reader's understanding of the
material presented. And, when you add in Events and blank
lines between those, you can produce a paper that has a Fog
index well post-graduate. Since most people aren't
post-grad, they are even more likely to misunderstand.

I've had the misfortune of having to unravel meaning from
some of these things, and it fails to raise the warm-fuzzies
toward the author.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

The more I use Legacy, the more I realize what an amazingly complicated program
it is. I suppose I want it to be even more complicated!

Is there a way to do any of the following?

On a descendant narrative report there is a line between each event that I
would like to get rid of. Instead I would like a double space between events.
(Bullet-style- formatting)

And there is also a line under picture captions that I'd like to do away with.

Also in the list of children, I'd like to have an empty line (i.e.,
double-space) between each child, but I see no way to do that.

And, I'd like an empty line (i.e., double-space) after the sentence that says
"their children were:"

As you know, German given names for boys were often "Johannes Christian,"
"Johannes Adam," "Johannes Ludwig," etc. Is there any way I can get Legacy to
either use the middle name or the full given name in narratives?

When the place of marriage is not given, Legacy inserts a blank line about an
inch or two long. I'd like not to have that line and don't know how to get rid
of it. I don't remember seeing it in the past.

On individual events, the formatting options of italics, bold, etc. work fine
in the notes field but don't affect the description, etc., fields. Any way to
change that?

Thanks,

Pat

[LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-22 Thread Pat Hickin
The more I use Legacy, the more I realize what an amazingly complicated
program it is. I suppose I want it to be even *more* complicated!

Is there a way to do any of the following?

On a descendant narrative report there is a line between each event that I
would like to get rid of. Instead I would like a double space between
events. (Bullet-style- formatting)

And there is also a line under picture captions that I'd like to do away
with.

Also in the list of children, I'd like to have an empty line (*i.e*.,
double-space) between each child, but I see no way to do that.

And, I'd like an empty line (*i.e*., double-space) after the sentence that
says "their children were:"

As you know, German given names for boys were often "Johannes Christian,"
"Johannes Adam," "Johannes Ludwig," etc. Is there any way I can get Legacy
to either use the middle name or the full given name in narratives?

When the place of marriage is not given, Legacy inserts a blank line about
an inch or two long. I'd like not to have that line and don't know how to
get rid of it. I don't remember seeing it in the past.

On individual events, the formatting options of italics, bold, etc. work
fine in the notes field but don't affect the description, etc., fields.
Any way to change that?

Thanks,

Pat
